Hereen Street,意思是绅士街。

Initially called Heeren Street, this narrow street was renamed Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

Recently, I revisited the 2008 Singaporean drama 'Little Nyonya.'

It tells a beautiful story about a wealthy businessman who is a Baba in Melaka marrying a servant, and they have a daughter.

I just realized that such situations actually occurred in the 1930s, not just in stories.

"The Little Nyonya" (Chinese: 小娘惹; Pinyin: Xiǎo Niángrě) is a Chinese mainland television drama series produced by iQiyi and Singapore's Mediacorp in 2020.

The show features an ensemble cast including Xiao Yan.

This series is a remake of the 2008 Singaporean version of "The Little Nyonya" produced by Mediacorp. The drama first aired on June 5, 2020, on the Dongfang TV channel and later on June 28, 2020, on CCTV-8 and iQiyi.

That is what I found people said about peranakan:

"
In my limited interactions with the Peranakan or Straits Chinese, I've noticed distinctions among them.

Those in Penang seem to have stronger Hokkien Chinese influences and can be less distinguishable from the regular Chinese population.

In contrast, the Peranakan in Melaka appear to be more integrated with the Malays and often use Malay in their households.

Beyond their delectable cuisine, what sets them apart from the average working-class Chinese is their inclination towards a more Westernized and cosmopolitan cultural perspective.

Looking back historically, it was the affluent, politically-aware, and Western-educated Straits Chinese who played pivotal roles in the country.

The elites in organizations like the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) originally hailed from the Straits Chinese community before being replaced by the more numerous nationalist Chinese figures.

"

Peranakan cuisine or Nyonya cuisine comes from the Peranakans, descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in

Penang, Malacca, Singapore and Indonesia, inter-marrying with local Malays.

In Baba Malay, a female Peranakan is known as a nonya (also spelled nyonya), and a male Peranakan is known as a baba.

The cuisine combines Chinese, Malay and other influences”

Occupations and trade

Many of the early Peranakans were entrepreneurial traders and shopkeepers. A significant number were also involved in the

real estate, shipping and banking sectors.

As most of the Peranakans received an English education and were fluent in the language, many of them were appointed by the British authorities as community and civic leaders.

Associations
Like many other communities, the Peranakans formed their own associations to advance the welfare of their community. In 1900, several key Straits-born leaders of the Chinese community, namely

Tan Jiak Kim, Seah Liang Seah, Lim Boon Keng (Dr) and Song Ong Siang, came together to form the Straits Chinese British Association (SCBA).

Besides looking after the interests of the Peranakan community, the SCBA initially also had a political agenda: to promote interest in the British Empire and loyalty to the Queen.

The SCBA is today known as the Peranakan Association.

Places

Historically, groups of Peranakans resided in several different locations, notably the Neil Road, Tanjong Pagar, Emerald Hill( near orchard road ) and the Joo Chiat, Katong areas.

Bubur Cha Cha (Nyonya Coconut Milk Dessert)

Nyonya Sweet Broth (Pengat)

https://malaysia.news.yahoo.com/mco-2-0-no-...pF0pznfuwPSErec

Unlike the Bubur Cha Cha which is available in dessert shops, the pengat is usually made in Penang Baba Nyonya homes or served for special occasions.

“We will then serve the pengat to our deities by 12 noon,” he said.

Yeoh, however, said that although the dish is a passed-down delicacy, there are new ingredients that his mother has added such as the black-eyed beans and sago jelly.

“But the basic components of the pengat remain the same which are the different types of tubers, pisang raja, sugar, fresh santan and pandan leaves.

“We also steam each type of tuber separately to prevent cross-contamination of their colours.”

Yeoh said that for this year, many of his non-Baba Nyonya friends have already asked him for the dessert.

Some of the typical dishes that would be served are the

Curry Kapitan (dry curry chicken),

Inche Kabin (Nyonya fried chicken),

Jiu Hu Char (stir fry jicama and cuttlefish),

Lor Bak (fried meat rolls),

Hong Bak (braised pork with aromatic spices),

Gulai Tumis (tamarind fish curry), and

Sambal Udang (prawn sambal).

“However, my family’s Curry Kapitan is slightly sweeter and less spicy than those from other Penang families because my mother who is Kelantanese-Peranakan prefers sweeter flavours.

“But our family will also cook our signature pig stomach soup that is cooked with chicken, abalone, and lotus seeds.”

Peranakan Straits design concept for the total 194 acres of land orbits around the theme of “Peranakan Nostalgia”.

The development is comprised of a total of 168 units, presenting a variety of double-storey linked villas and semi-detached homes.

The essence of Penang and Melaka brings the theme of heritage buildings, that create a warm and wholesome atmosphere. Thus, Peranakan Straits has inherited the said style with the innovations and modern interpretations of a heritage based theme.

Some of the homes featured in this phase mirror the architecture used during the construction of heritage shop houses, some of which are even more than 100 years old.

Prospective buyers interested to be proud owners of the homes featured within Peranakan Straits, can choose from four different layouts within this precinct which include

Azula and Ophelia Link Villas and

Emeria and Elia Semi-Detached homes.

Out of the 168 homes offered, 74 homes are designed for those who prefer larger garden spaces built upon land areas that are 36ft by 80ft respectively.

All homes within Peranakan Straits provide four-plus-one bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and 4 car parking spaces each with built-ups that range between 2,292sq ft and 2,797sq ft.

As of now, the units available in this parcel include bumi units in Azula and Ophelia, selling from RM888,000.

The landscaping surrounding this development equally implements the Peranakan style, which truly adds a unique touch to this modern property however, what really attracts buyers to the township is the environment that it is nestled within creating an ideal destination for modern family living.

Buyers that showed interest to be a part of Peranakan Straits then prior to its launch, began registering long before the actual launch date as many were attracted to its unique facade.

In addition, the fact that the expanse is located strategically but away from the hustle and bustle of the city is the key aspect attracting droves of homeowners to the expanse.

Peranakan Straits within Setia Eco Templer is sold between RM888,000 and RM1,643,000 depending on the type of home purchased. These homes also experience added tranquility as it is located next to S P Setia’s Balinese concept homes dubbed Amantara.

To the delight of those that enjoy the finer things that life offers, a clubhouse is accessible to residents providing amenities such as an Olympic sized pool, gardens, a lake, outdoor recreation area and even a ballroom.

Peranakan has multiple play areas scattered across its vicinity, as it is built with family in thought. Some of the facilities that can be found here include commercial lots, a gym as well as multiple walking routes encircling garden and lakes.

The development is secured by 24-hour security measures and separate gated and guarded areas for individual phases.

Peranakan is supported by a commercial hub in the vicinity known as The Grove @ Templer offering 40 shop office units, out of which 22 units have been sold.

32 units within this parcel are presented as 3-storey shophouse units with built-ups ranging between 4,921 sq ft and 7,262 sq ft while the balance units are crafted as 2-storey units with built areas ranging between 2,996 sq ft and 4,350 sq ft.

My grandmother says that for this dish, it's best to use a stone mortar for the dried shrimp.

However, if you don't have a stone mortar or want to save time, using a food processor to crush them is also acceptable.

Her method involves first sautéing the dried shrimp bits in a little oil until fragrant; she says this truly brings out the aroma of the dried shrimp.

Finally, she mixes the sautéed dried shrimp bits with the sautéed sambal.

Although this adds an extra step, the flavor of the dried shrimp is indeed more aromatic.

Most Peranakan moved to Penang/SG in the last decade, you can see the increasing influence and food sold there. In Malaysia, I am afraid only Melaka is the only place left and even that is lesser due to increasing racism and Islamization. Note that despite marrying Malays, Peranakans are not Muslims as required by "law" in the past.

**Occupations** Early Peranakans were often involved in trading, real estate, shipping, and banking. They received an English education and held civic leadership roles.
**Associations** Peranakans formed associations, such as the Peranakan Association, to promote community welfare and loyalty to the British Empire.
**Places** Historical Peranakan communities were located in areas like Neil Road, Tanjong Pagar, Emerald Hill, and Joo Chiat/Katong.

You are correct.

There were rumors that Peranakan people were included in the Bumiputera category and entitled to a 15% discount when buying a house in the 1950s or 1960s.

However, I'm not sure if this was removed in 1970 or at some other point in time.

The JPN may no longer classify Peranakan as Bumiputera.

Does your girlfriend still have Peranakan costumes?

Do her parents' birth certificates list their race as Baba/Nyonya?

Do they also cook Peranakan food?
