Most Peranakan moved to Penang/SG in the last decade, you can see the increasing influence and food sold there. In Malaysia, I am afraid only Melaka is the only place left and even that is lesser due to increasing racism and Islamization. Note that despite marrying Malays, Peranakans are not Muslims as required by "law" in the past.

QUOTE(plouffle0789 @ Nov 5 2023, 02:17 PM) Does your girlfriend still have Peranakan costumes? Yes, it's part of their daily wear or special occasions. Do her parents' birth certificates list their race as Baba/Nyonya? Didnt ask, but they didnt mention anything on that. Do they also cook Peranakan food? Yes of course, a must have

QUOTE(joe_star @ Nov 17 2023, 04:26 AM) But for that reason I believe they are not consider bumiputera either The migration and non-Muslim are originally not a factor to become Bumi/Peranakan. It was simply love between two races back in Melaka. When the NEP started then Arab-isation by Anwar in UMNO decades back, then only the requirement of Bumis = Malays + muslims are set. If the current definition of Bumis are being imposed back in the old days, Sabah, Sarawak and many alliances will cease to be since they won't want that kind of unfair arrangement.

QUOTE(joe_star @ Nov 17 2023, 01:16 PM) It's been part of constitution since 1957 This is why it is important for Malays to learn their own history, no matter whether it's bad or good. FYI bumi definition is set in Cons, but the NEP and the benefits/social status were granted outside the constitution, circumventing the need of Parliament approval.

QUOTE(O-haiyo @ Nov 18 2023, 09:35 AM) peranakan here. and contrary to what most people believed, most of the peranakan never married a malay in the first place. it was more like assimilation of culture due to geographical factor. In my case, my father's and mother's grandparent was from china. Landed here and lived in malay majority area. I get this alot from my friend, peranakan is chinese or malay? lol For you to be called peranakan, must be someone who married a local i.e. Malay. I don't know how many generations down the road for you, but you are misinformed. The culture and dishes of peranakan is 50/50 malay+chinese. Why are you claiming differently, when the definition of Peranakan is already set in stone as mixed?
