Im starting this thread to see what other ppl have done to improve their iswaras

Mods must be practical and have a purpose
These are mods made to the stock car
Hopefully not too expensive either laugh.gif
(e.g. adding things like new skirting or spoiler or transplanting engines are not counted)

Preferably, the mods / add-ons should fall into one of these 5 categories:
1. Increase power icon_idea.gif
2. Improve FC icon_rolleyes.gif
3. Improve functionality rclxm9.gif
4. Improve comfort thumbup.gif
5. Improve performance brows.gif

If you DIY anything that could be of use/interest to other iswara drivers, please feel free to explain the steps/methods you used to make the device/gadget/gizmo/mod biggrin.gif

If you dont mind telling, please post the price of your mods / add-ons (for everyone's info...incase we want to fix also brows.gif )
And if you have pics, we would all love to check out your bling drool.gif
(but please post them in spoilers/thumbnails to save space)

P.S. Please dont spam

heres what i have done for my car so far
they arent expensive...except for the tinting and the rims...those really hurt... blink.gif moneyflies.gif

1.
DIY insulated the whole car. used insuflex for floor, booth, roof, bonnet and firewall. used tar strips for door panels.
this greatly reduces road noise, engine noise and that 'milo tin' effect which is so common among the new iswaras
<<<more info here>>>
cost: less than RM300

where i got the stuff:

2.
DIY install stabilizer bar
this significantly improves handling around corners at high speed. mine is bolted onto the shock's bar. some say that isnt good. the ones that bolt directly onto the body will also work i guess...most important is to stiffen the chassis so it doesnt flex too much when cornering
cost: RM45

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

3.
DIY a door for the glove 'shelf'
without this thing, i couldnt keep much on that shelf....everything kept falling out... grumble.gif i know its not the prettiest thing around...but it serves its purpose marvelously thumbup.gif
cost: ~RM25

Added on October 23, 2007, 9:48 pm4.
DIY installed a vacuum gauge
this helps you drive well...it tells you when you are pressing too hard (shouldnt go less than 5inHg), and also is also the best (cheap) diagnostic tool for your engine
<<<more info here>>>
cost: ~RM100 (including shipping from the US)

5.
DIY installed the starter motor relay
most iswaras have this starter problem (when the key is turned, it goes *click*,...but nothing happens)...this relay totally solves the problem
<<<more info here>>>
cost: ~RM15

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

6.
DIY installed original proton CAI duct
this will give your car cold air just like the other hosing n all...but is much neater. Also, since its drawing air from the fender cavity, there should be negligeble spray n kick-up getting sucked in...this should keep your air filter cleaner longer wink.gif
cost: RM51

7.
installed shock sensor
got this from max auto in bangi as suggested by blackpc (its apposite the pkns building)...this is a retro fit...they'll cut one of your alarm wires to add it in...its a simple job...took bout 20mins all in
cost: RM50

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

8.
changed to alloy rims
the stock rims are quite heavy...not to mention they arent the nicest looking things on the road...the lighter rims should slightly improve performance...not to mention they dont bend when going into a pot hole....they either hold their shape...or break...so easy tongue.gif hahaha
cost: RM600 (traded in the ori rims...tyres and all...and got new set of Goodyear Ducaro GA)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

9.
installed V-Kool Elite
...what can i say...this is a hot country laugh.gif
cost: RM2k

please read spoiler...*important* get another brand...DO NOT BUY V-KOOL
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

10.
installed mud flaps
the iswara's design is kinda bad...it kicks up dirt onto the side real easily
cost: RM40

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

11.
DIY installed another cigarette lighter socket
the current one is directly infront of my 1st gear position
so when i plug in my hp charger and try to shift into 1st gear when holding the gear shift knob normally, my hand will hit the wire...this is really a dumb design by proton...no idea y they didnt recess it like the old iswara dashboards...anywayz...i've bought the socket already...from max auto also...quite hard to find...and this looks like a good quality one too! biggrin.gif plan to install it facing up infront of the gear shift...the corner looks like got enough space hmm.gif
cost: RM13

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

12.
DIY installed volt meter
this can help to monitor the charging and condition of the battery
the alternator performance can also be monitored
the meter i got also comes with a clock and a temperature sensor
as the iswara lmst does not have a built in clock, this function is particularly useful
the temperature sensor is kindof a bonus...its a nifty gadget to have in the car biggrin.gif
cost: RM145

13.
<to be installed soon>
DIY install long range, high intensity spot lights
some roads i travel on these days are really dark at night
so the standard head beams, even on high are insufficient
need to get a couple of good spotlights

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

14.
Switched from Mineral Engine Oil to Fully Synthetic Oil
Was using Shell Helix, switched to Shell Helix Ultra Full Synth
It actually gives me better mileage!
And even though you pay more than double the price of mineral oils, it can last 4 times as long, PLUS it improves mileage
(full synths these days can be run 20000km easily without breaking a sweat...just remember to change your filter at 10k and you'll do fine wink.gif )
So not only are you protecting your engine better by using full synths, you are actually saving money in the long run! icon_idea.gif
cost: RM188 (for a 4L bottle)

on a side note, im running castrol EP80/90 in my gearbox
been using castrol for more than 30 years and its still a great choice (just my opinion here...im sure there are many other good oils)

Warning!!!

15.
Changed stock copper core sparkers to DIY side-gapped platinums
Not only do platinum spark plugs provide better performance as compared to normal copper cores, side gapping them provides a little extra kick
Quite honestly, I can feel a little difference...I know its not much, but trust me,...in a massively underpowered car like the 1.3L iswara, you want to get every tiny bit of power you can
I believe the street lingo for this would be 'the engine feels lighter' or 'the engine feels more rev happy'
I'm using NGK G-Power Platinum sparkplugs
cost: RM40 (4 pcs) + ~3hours to file down the grounding electrode coz i didnt have a grinding wheel/cutter

16.
Changed the "sports" exhaust that came with the car to the "original" saga exhaust.
Not only does proton's sad attempt at a sports exhaust have a cheezy sound, it also causes bad milage
I kept the flange plate of the old exhaust line as the "original" saga exhaust's plate appears to be slighty different in its dimensions
Also kept the old exhaust's chromed tail pipe as the "original" saga exhaust's tail pipe is too long
It will have to be cut and would look pretty bad if no proper end piece was installed
The pipe of the "sports" exhaust is larger than the "original" saga exhaust line so the chromed tail pipe piece can be just slid over and tack welded onto the new "original" tail pipe
I get up to 1km/L extra now
Before changing the exhaust i averaged 11+ to low 12km/L
I not get nothing less than 12.7km/L when I do some hard driving,...13km/L is quite easily achievable with normal driving
Current record is 13.7km/L
Cost: RM130 including installation

17.
Installed battery terminal disconnector.
I travel out of town a decent bit so my car often stands for a week or more. I used to manually disconnect the -ve battery terminal clamp. But over time, the terminal lug, being lead and thus quite soft, has crushed and eventually even when the terminal clamp is fully tightened, it was still a tiny bit loose.
By installing the disconnector, not only is the task much easier (takes all of 3 seconds), the terminal lug is preserved. All one has to do is turn the knob a couple of turns. No need even to fully unscrew the knob.
The clamping lug on the disconnector where the car's original terminal clamp is attached to was a bit too small. To fix this, I got a flat strip of lead from my local fishing store, wrapped it around the disconnector's lug and cut it to size to form a sleeve with a slight gap (3-4mm) between the ends to allow for crushing and settling.
Cost: RM38 (ebay.com)

on closer inspection, i noticed that your strut is totally dead welded
so means the shocks cant move independently at all...coz the bearings will stop any movement
now only left angular movement...(can rotate only)
is that ok? hmm.gif
got any advantage/disadvantage?

quote from Pro RS site:

"Stainless Steel Braided Teflon hose applied to PRO-RS Brake Hose
are supplied and manufactured by a leading Aerospace hose manufacturer based in the U.S."

y are they so vague about the "leading Aerospace hose manufacturer based in the U.S."?

cant find the name anywhere...they just keep emphasizing the company is from 'the US'
...which could mean a third world island sumwhere which happens to fall under the US...this is wat they are doing for i think nike tshirts or sumthing...say its made in the US,...technically its true...but its not made in the US of A as we know it...its made in some backwater third world island state that happens to fall under the US

this is so classic of small startup comps that try to sound big and important blink.gif

Not really cosmetic... it depends on the driver.
For the casual driver with very mild driving habits, yes, they are close to useless. But not for the temperamental maniac tongue.gif
Well, people have spent more on 'cosmetics' too... How much does a set of nice rims cost these days again? unsure.gif

just plug into the square hole near fender. remove the air filter cover, plug in n put back. i ididnt close up the round hole under the square hole near the fender.

*
the big ac tube doesnt rub on the top of the flexible joint?
mine will rub if i didnt raise it
in the long run the plastic will wear out (or worse yet, your ac aluminium tube wear out rclxub.gif ) then will bocor
...coz of the engine vibration
....i've seen plastic hose wear out metal...
lastime my old car had a vent hose rubbing on the alternator...after many years the alternator corner haus d wor...
so i would strongly suggest u raise the ac hose...just my humble opinion sweat.gif

bro,...if u didnt close the round hole,...the wouldnt hot air from the engine bay just get sucked through it and back into the CAI?
