You need a team for this kind of job, audio, video, camera, mic, editing, ideas, location, what kind of content, people that you need to interview and make video with.

For the computer, I think it's best you get an i7 with 16gb ram. Or maybe a macbook pro, try find an used i7 + 16gb ram gaming PC.

A friend of mine also a local youtuber, got pretty decent subscriber. Check his channel out -> https://www.youtube.com/@qartelTV

I make longplay of classic/retro games. The very long story short is, I have to pour in at least 6 hours for every hour of content you can see in my channel if people can find it. The content is certainly niche, but not one that gains exposure and views easily so I felt all the effort I poured in was ultimately pointless.

Was already a jobless loser for too long so decided enough is enough

The money’s at Roblox/minecraft/genshin imo. The problem is…. For multiplayer games you definitely need friends. Nowadays the trend is with ‘reacts’. You don’t need to show face even, you just need a damm good personality, a channel for you to refer is bwaap. Get a feeling of it.

Starting a YouTube channel is definitely a long-term gig, but it's super rewarding if you're into it. I started my own cooking channel a while back, and yeah, it's a lot of work, especially the editing part. With your laptop specs, you should be okay for editing 1080p videos at the start. I began with a similar setup and managed just fine. Sure, it wasn't the fastest, but it got the job done.

About boosting your channel at the start, I actually tried to buy youtube views once. It gave my channel a little jumpstart. It's like a quick way to get your videos out there when nobody knows you yet. Just keep making great content, and the real viewers will stick around.

This topic is close to my heart... I'm going through whatever TS is going through right now. A bit of a long essay but I'll try to keep it brief.

I started my youtube channel back in 2021. Did it for about 4-5 months... Posted about 25 videos on food.. Then real life caught up.. Too busy with work.. And totally forgot about my channel dy. Then last September i check my channel again... Eh how come got 350 subscribers? So thought it will be such a waste if I didnt continue... So i did.. Attended a quite famous youtube workshop.. Get some more ideas and inspiration.. Decided to go all out to monetize my channel... Need 1k subs + 4000 watch hrs (in 1 year)... The most daunting is the 4k watch hours cos in my head thinking, who will want to watch my amateur videos, right? I pivoted away from food and focused more on other topics. Long story short, I'm now at 915 subs + 5250 watch hours with 176 long videos and shorts. So yeah...need more subs 😂

On the laptop part... I used my 2017 lenovo laptop. Intel i7 + 2gb gtx1050 + 8gb ram + 1tb hdd when i first started and edited and posted my videos in 1080p. Its slow but ok la..

But when i restarted my youtube... I wanted to upload 4k videos... And my laptop specs wasn't up to the task. I upgraded the ram to 32gb and added in a new 2tb ssd... Now my editing, exporting and uploading is 60-70% faster than b4. I also bought a used Pocket 2 to replace my phone cam which shot lousy 4k videos. Haha.

All the best TS... The biggest obstacle for any new YouTuber is not taking the first step.

tip: Make sure the channel content/topic is an extension of something you're passionate about. Otherwise.... the journey will be a grind and soul-destroying .

First and foremost is what kind of YouTubers you aim to be?. Do you plan to churn out one video per week or once a month kind? Your target audience?. Locals, Asians or Westerners?
Many want success minus the work and let me tell you it’s a bull when people said can do it alone. Yes, if you do it full time. But if you have a day job and want to churn out one video per week, then you will get burnout in no time.
My kid is working in a socmed company and one of her task is to manage YT productions. Just to churn out one video per week requires content writers, video and sound editors, videographers, venue scouters etc. With all the backings, so far managed to garner 30k subs in six months. According to her, too many players nowadays and most of the topics/subjects/issues/content already covered, thus trying to break into this YT business is not that easy. If you are planning to do it solo, you need a lot a lot of passion for it cause it takes a lot of hard work. To try and monetise it without a clear plan is just a waste of time.

Started doing mine for a niche video game I play seasonally. It's pretty chill (but then again it's a topic I'm passionate about, and seasonally means only active for a month or so every quarter.)
My main objective is just sharing though, although wouldn't hurt down the line if I can monetize it, it's not my main motivation.
I think it can definitely burn you out if you do contents on things you're not passionate in.

Currently would love to learn more on video editing skills, shortcuts, tips & tricks, etc. that would make my videos pop more.

I haven't started my YT channel yet, but i am working also with my ex colleague that we will start a YouTube Channel, and going around interviewing people around KL.

We are just doing the ground work, so i decided to start practicing Video editing...and i actually enjoyed it and taken it as a hobby.

Originally i started on with CapCut for PC which is the easiet to learn and there's ton's on tutorials on YT to learn it and picked up pretty fast but i found it not suitbale for my needs, so i am now learning Davinci Reslove which also has a free version. It's better that premier pro (you can check on the reviews).

But it way harder to learn, well i wouldn't say harder, but it's more detailed professional type of video editing.

Downsides of Davinci Resolve, you need a pretty good PC or Mac and the YT Tutorials are not sufficient to learn everything, you need to buy one of those expensive tutorials.

But there is a popular one called Kolder creative which he sells his course for 3.7K, however you can get it on shopee for RM12 which is what i did.

I have done majority of the course this week, and plan to finish the color grading section today and next week start playing around with the software.

Hope it helps.

Need to constantly upload new videos weekly to maintain watch hours. Unless yr old videos are evergreen tyoe of subjects.

Need to catch their algoritm as well, some videos can suddenly spike to tens of thousands of views, meanwhile other video uploaded in the channel recently only hundreds of views

Using ShotCut myself (based on my research is a more extensive CapCut), I think capability wise it's good, just trying to learn how to insert animations / do transition / etc. to for a more entertaining video.
Maybe if I ever hit a technological wall with ShotCut then I'd venture to learn other softwares. I heard DaVinci Resolve is quite taxing hardware wise so it drove me off abit.

I'm more lacking in techniques under my belt I guess, just need to learn on youtube more for the tips & tricks.

I did youtube channel when I was young but my account was terminated due to DMCA, I was young and dumb because I didn't take heed of their warnings, though I wasn't big, I did not mention my nationality or show my face, but I was earning decent amount of money to support myself while I live with my grandparents, I only did gaming without commentary or facecam, my highest views were 360k and I had about 10k subs at that time.

But I support your ambition and desire to start one, I only had the privilege to start when I was 14, having no job I was able to grow my channel since I stay at home majority of the time.

It takes a lot of dedication and patience... Just keep posting and you will get there, don't expect overnight success, you need years or maybe less to get a steady income. I didn't had steady income but I was able to put aside RM300 monthly and still being able to pay the electricity bills and internet.

My 2 minute very simple video here already gave me RM290 since I uploaded it in March 2020. Now it is giving me about RM4 per month.

Actually with some efforts, making pocket money with YouTube is quite easy.

There have been many supportive people in my last thread and i sincerely thank you all for it.  smile.gif

As one of potential ideas, i'm thinking of starting to make content on youtube with the aim of eventually earning some income off it.
I've been watching and reading around to get a feel.
From what i gather this is a long term effort (lots of time needed) but with potential.

Any comments or opinions on this endeavor appreciated.. particularly from those already doing it or explored it. smile.gif

By the way, my current laptop is an i5-1135g7 with only 8gb of ram(stuck with it due to ultrabook soldered), ssd and no dedicated gpu.
Do you guys think this will be sufficient for me to use in starting out to edit videos?

Likely i will do the editing in 1080 resolution for now.
Trying to not spend on equipment for now if avoidable.
