I make longplay of classic/retro games. The very long story short is, I have to pour in at least 6 hours for every hour of content you can see in my channel if people can find it. The content is certainly niche, but not one that gains exposure and views easily so I felt all the effort I poured in was ultimately pointless.

Was already a jobless loser for too long so decided enough is enough

Great minds think alike, I am also thinking about starting my own YouTube channel, but still figuring out what type of content I want to churn out. will be following this thread.

Also i don't think you need assistants once you make it big, a good example is Casey Neistat he does all the videos himself and he has 12.6 million subs.

If you haven't watched it, check it out...it very inspirational.

actually create videos as your daily sharings 1st. dont think of monetizing or anything... go slow and steady. Churn out lotsa of videos along the way without burning out yourself... then if things working out, you can try going full time on it

In some way, he did EXPLOIT his youtube audience to get that windfall? If you did not include his documentary that he sold to discovery waayyy before youtube.

He has a lot of subs during his few years in youtube. His content is flashy and mostly about living in NY, flying here and there and sometimes some equipment review like (the now defunct) Boosted boards.

Then he started BEME with a venture capitalist. Beme is a new social media app. He hyped it kaw kaw with new office and roadshows. Even managed to convince some youtubers to work with BEME.

Then after about 2 years in, he & partner nego a deal to sell BME to CNN. Reportedly that netted him 25 mil.

Then he stopped making videos and went to LA.

After a few years, LA is turning into shit place, he comes back to NY restarting it again.

So in someway Youtube did make him money. His assets are the user base of youtube that simultaneously used Beme app.

It might be a challenge to edit with that specs.

But depends on what type of content you’re publishing.

Youtube shorts pays about 0.04-0.08 cents/1000 views

Long form at 2-7dolllars per thousand depending on where your audience is at and niche.

And not only that, google cuts 30% of your earnings as required by the IRS if your audience is mostly from US.
*
Yeah I suspect I might just be scraping by with that specs.. my aim is to try it out first.. like edit a video or 2 to get a feel. If I feel it’s right then perhaps start getting more decent equipment.

Wow 30pc is a lot.. but I guess u earn more from US viewers so perhaps still worth overall.

I am also thinking of starting some kind of youtube channel to talk about 3 things

1. Politics (general world politics i.e Radical left vs Conservative) and also maybe touch on Malaysia politics

2. Money and investing

3. Cars (hobby of mine)

However, i am still contemplating on wanting to show my face or not. I guess will have a test video to see if it works or not.

Same here.. If it’s a faceless channel I think the approach would be different.

Politics might have the risk of getting demonetised? China related contents particularly from what I’ve heard. Eg. Advchina.

Already in the YPP. Adsense cannot be relied as your main source of income unfortunately. Brand deals and sponsorship on the other hand are worth way more

I guess the income fluctuates a lot. Hmm interesting.

I have played with youtube in the past casually, made roughly 25 videos related to ... well ....... Conjectured theories, experiment just for fun I did not invest in too much effort on everything, I do learn storyboarding, planning , video editing, voice recording, and also tried my hands on own baked art.

Needless to say the venture failed. Learn from those mistake but had never reignite the effort to rebuild the channel again.

Truth is youtube is pretty much a discipline game, you do something you like or do not like you'll have to follow a few strict rules in order to see minor success, its never really what you like but what your audience like.

Visually not pleasing? Fail.

Don't sound pleasant with speech? Fail.

Content not interesting enough? Fail.

Content too boring? Fail.

Most of the time if you plan on just honest talk as you go your video will stray, and with youtube policy being very different from the past if you ever want to see a dime down your leather duster you will have to treat it like a business rather then personal project.

I might consider revamping the old channel with new gain knowledge and work experience trough out the years but the old style definitely had to go.

My initial intention of the channel was sort of trying to make my own drawings to illustrate while sharing free ideas from a different perspective on world views as well as mud puddling missing puzzle to get people thinking and exploring different possibilities. In short my channel kind of like mike chen or mr.gao but not in real person, instead with my own art ( most likely a mistake as I have no drawing skill).

If I do revamp the channel I will most likely sweep all the old content under private or delete them.

Not easy to build a channel, especially if you genuinely trying to build a channel rather then using scam tactic to build just for the money.

Much easier way is to gather a few others that is interested under the same topic or hire a small group of professionals to help build the channel, which of course will cost a small fortune to setup.

For anyone curious, the channel is identical to my lowyat account. But be warn as it would be like visiting for prison food, keep your expectation low if you could help it.

No i know that, but besides sponsership deals he made his main fortune when he sold a company he created to CNN. But his passion for Vlogging goes beyond monetary gain and I wasn't refferring to how much money he made, rather to way his produces and shoots his videos.

IMHO, items 1 & 2 are pretty good idea to start off with, but I would be weary of item 1 as it's a dicey topic especially Malaysian polotics. Reason I say that is either sides of the politice divide are very sensitive to people's opinions and if even if you say something innocent it can misconstruced to be offensive and open a whole can of worms. I don't mean to burst your bubble I am just giving you fair warning. Besides, if you check out online besides YT, there are already lots of people talking about polotics nows.

As for item 3, instead of looking for inspiration from the local reviewers, look to the foreign ones for inspiration as the local ones seem a bit dry. One guy which I like which i am sure you are familiar with is Jeremey Clarkson.

Personally I would like to have YT videos shot like casey nesitate, but the dialogue of Anothony Bourdain. Not a carbon copy, but something to draw inspiration from.

Thank you for this insight. From the various creators comments on YouTube, it’s looks like it’s generally a long haul game and consistency in posting video is key
