both me n waifu been craving hard for some good chinese meal..while taking a short weekend to visit MY would never be enough, we set our eyes on Taiwan.

it's very convenient as the local airport (Komatsu) 20 min away has direct flight to Taipei, and best part of the airport is free parking (for like ~2+ weeks) when taking international flight

quickly put together a 3 days 3 night trip, only need take one day leave.

Komatsu airport
user posted image

Very nice stained glass at the departure area
user posted image

short and smooth 3 hours flight, imigration suck ass, very long queue..
both unlucky, didn't get anything from the lucky draw sad.gif
user posted image

Airport express straight to Taipei main to check in and drop off the luggage first before first round of dinner.
Transport fare are pretty cheap, but got too used to JP's JR gate speed, felt the fare gate was pretty slow.

Nice Taipei main station

Walked over to the nearest night market, Ningxia Night Market 寧夏夜市
user posted image

user posted image

since no particular plan of what to eat, so simply walk one round and decided on braised meat rice. seems pretty popular store, no place to sit and many ppl queue but not sure why the auntie just let me and my wife sit in front of the shop, skip queue and order makan laugh.gif
user posted image

ordered vege n a bowl of braised meat rice. holy fuk..one spoon already worth the trip, super nice gelatinous fat sticking all over that smacking lip, ichiban! thumbsup.gif
and so damn cheap, 40 NTD only sweat.gif
user posted image

next meal, wanted to try taiwan fried bee hoon
user posted image

40 NTD also, cheap af but i prefer MY "economy" bee hoon better
user posted image

also, I never been to a hotter city than Taipei, even at night, it's so fking hot rclxub.gif

couldn't get more of braised meat rice..so went for another round for supper.
that's where everything started to go down hill real fast.
not delicious de braised meat rice.
user posted image

Last day
another not delicious braised meat rice for breakfast...
then later I learned from one of my TW follower, that there's generally two type of braised meat rice, one dry like this two pic, and the sticky ones which are godly. I prefer the latter ones.
user posted image

Rushed over to the airport and checked in..
since still got time, I went over to the other terminal to look for bubble tea. but sad af, T2 bubble tea shop only open at 11am..was there at 10+am

no choice, had to masuk departure already.
and lord behold, bubble tea in front of my gate wub.gif

tapao2 two cup, one drink on the spot, another brought all the way back to JP laugh.gif laugh.gif
user posted image

sekian my short taipei food trip.

some key points:
1. summer not for human, so I will never step into TW in summer again
2. braised meat rice and bubble tea alone are worth that return flight ticket

in the end, spent a total of 128k yen in total for everything (flight, hotel, etc.), very cheap n fun trip biggrin.gif

can't wait for my MY & BKK trip this coming Friday brows.gif brows.gif
all the food waiting for me wub.gif wub.gif

I find most Taiwan food to be not amazing, but their braised pork rice with each grain of rice coated with a layer of pork fat to be delicious. I can't find it in Malaysia at all.

Some in fact have no meat literally in it...it's just pork fat and rice. Nice but it's heart attack in a meal.

Been there recently and agree with Shilin night market. Overrated as hell and feel like more carnival (scam) games there than things to enjoy.

Same thoughts on the food, some are good (braised pork ftw!) and some are just tasteless or peppery compared to MY counterpart. Btw, if you go again next time, I recommend Xinbeitou which is slightly north of shilin. Very nice hot spring town and is affordable

Gua actually at taoyuan now but here locals said night time usually rains.
But yeah their bubble tea is really nice, myself not lover but the taste is different. My friend said it's not really called "pearl bubble", I forgot the name but it's kinda transparent.

anyway feel like sharing some of my favourite foods (tasty/kinda miss/hard to find elsewhere/value) I had in taiwan:
- braised pork rice (lu rou fan), nuff said, the fenglai rice glutinous mix with the oily braised pork is really quite enjoyable
- devil chicken chop (惡魔雞排), can find it in some night market, it's actually good, juicy, big portion, not like the stupid ximending chicken chop, I probably can find a juicier wood stick in our jungle than it
- taichung salty cake (鹹蛋糕), it sounds crazy and weird and first but surprisingly good, I miss the taste, it's something you can't really find it elsewhere
- taitung shui jian bao (水煎包), I remember it was NTD20? huge and actually taste good,
- oyster, be it raw or bbq or etc,, way cheaper and fresher then msia, even in night market you can find, already beat most of the hotel here 9 street
- soy milk, their soy milk is really 'milk', as in, really thick and flavourful, unlike us really 'soya water' cause damn watery
- dan bing (蛋餅), ok this one a bit hit or miss because it's everywhere (like we can find karipap almost everywhere) but if you happened to find a good one, it's really good
- sashimi, their fresh catch is actually good and darn cheap, beat msia in every way, of course japan still win but value wise, it's really good
- liquor, they have many distillery there and their quality is really not bad, besides kavalan, there's one kaohsiung distillery that make lychee liquor, really really good
- shi jia (釋迦), their buah nona, totally different from ours, it's like tree-growned ice cream

if you're travelling to TW during summer
taipei is the wrong place to be, it's supposed to be anywhere at the south....taidong or ludao

don't eat those beef noodle, oyster meesua at touristy place or night market, they're way off standard compared to what the locals eat

couldn't get more of braised meat rice..so went for another round for supper.
that's where everything started to go down hill real fast.
not delicious de braised meat rice.

Last day
another not delicious braised meat rice for breakfast...
then later I learned from one of my TW follower, that there's generally two type of braised meat rice, one dry like this two pic, and the sticky ones which are godly. I prefer the latter ones.

Rushed over to the airport and checked in..
since still got time, I went over to the other terminal to look for bubble tea. but sad af, T2 bubble tea shop only open at 11am..was there at 10+am

no choice, had to masuk departure already.
and lord behold, bubble tea in front of my gate wub.gif

tapao2 two cup, one drink on the spot, another brought all the way back to JP laugh.gif  laugh.gif

sekian my short taipei food trip.

some key points:
1. summer not for human, so I will never step into TW in summer again
2. braised meat rice and bubble tea alone are worth that return flight ticket

in the end, spent a total of 128k yen in total for everything (flight, hotel, etc.), very cheap n fun trip biggrin.gif
can't wait for my MY & BKK trip this coming Friday brows.gif  brows.gif

I find most Taiwan food to be not amazing, but their braised pork rice with each grain of rice coated with a layer of pork fat to be delicious. I can't find it in Malaysia at all.

Some in fact have no meat literally in it...it's just pork fat and rice. Nice but it's heart attack in a meal.

same feeling. but I kinda like the night market especially when I'm not living in MY, a lot of choice, give that asian food street vibe..lots of choices although not everything is nice.

you can try this , one of the best, walking distance from ximending

HK, shit place tbh, walk on the street that time crowded, people around you smoking, air con water dripping from building above. people rude too, hell and heaven if compared to Taiwan

China, nothing special, big cities boring, everywhere air quality sucks. people less rude better than hk, those countryside tourist area still ok can go sightseeing, but don't buy anything, lots of scams

yea, korea food only 1 taste 1 style biggrin.gif

Been there recently and agree with Shilin night market. Overrated as hell and feel like more carnival (scam) games there than things to enjoy.

Same thoughts on the food, some are good (braised pork ftw!) and some are just tasteless or peppery compared to MY counterpart. Btw, if you go again next time, I recommend Xinbeitou which is slightly north of shilin. Very nice hot spring town and is affordable

QUOTE(bergstein @ Aug 20 2023, 02:02 AM)
anyway feel like sharing some of my favourite foods (tasty/kinda miss/hard to find elsewhere/value) I had in taiwan:
*
Thank for sharing such detailed list!

Yeah...

Was in Taiwan many years ago in August as well... Fuh... I will never go there again in August. Even queueing for night market foods at night also sweat like crazy. Dont even mention afternoon.

Food wise... Nothing much memorable. Most overrated is their oyster cake... Man, Malaysian one so much better. Maybe because eating at night market area, next time if go also must try restaurant see got difference or not. We did have a good ru rou fan at one of the restaurant.

Instead back then, most memorable was buying some cakes from 7-11 and it taste better than Malaysian bakery. 7-11 staffs also puzzle why I sapu dozens of that particular cake.

it's very convenient as the local airport (Komatsu) 20 min away has direct flight to Taipei, and best part of the airport is free parking (for like ~2+ weeks) when taking international flight

quickly put together a 3 days 3 night trip, only need take one day leave.

china(shanghai, beijing) was quite easy, great taste and cheap price. So I thoughtsince taiwan also "china" maybe similar. those boba tea thing should be non harom right

this is mostly cause our perception is based on a small region in malaysia which insisted on gao and more gao sweat.gif

heck, recently went with a group to sabah and my friends said sabah food not nice cause its bland and plain tasting. i was okay since ive been before and knew, but theyre new so they assumed otherwise

Well, Malaysia also sometimes can feel that kind of hot but theirs is continuous. 6days there same weather.

It's a bit like after you came out from a bath but keep sweating. Those ppl see me dukung my 2 years old son queueing for stinky tofu in taichung wondering why I wet my whole shirt.

go airport kaohxiong. then go kenting town see beaches. then make your way east. alishan.
if can drive, then can slowly enjoy the scenery from kaohxiong to kenting. kaohxiong mostly seafood la cause port city.
but night market wise, it will fall short compared to taipei. taipei got much more variety.
but if first timer, ayam recommend taipei then baru kaohxiong

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

惡魔雞排 i had the counterpart, 天使鸡排 at kaohxiong very nice. very very tebal but juicy.
lu ruo fan is equivalent of our nasi lemak. can find anywhere.
my soya experience is the 阜杭豆漿。it was salty version lol but nice la.
only had some beer bought at 7-11. their 7-11 sure go in when i passby.
i did not have this 釋迦. next time will go again to try

HK food is ok ok , their morning breakfast sucks, they eat same shit Set A to Set E every morning , in msia we can easily get more varieties of foods in 1 restaurant. really puke.gif and i stop eating breakfast for few months when i working there

the expensive food is nice, those high end one. if wanna eat wantan mee read review first, some nice some really sucks

for most people, HK is a place that you won't feel like going for 2nd time , and japan / taiwan you can go many many times.

msia taste is strong, look at the KL hokkian mee

compare with SG, sg taste is mild, thats why msian go sg, say sg taste not good, then sg go msia say msia taste good
but it is just the MSG put more

i personal like the fresh taste, when your food ingredient is quality and fresh, it will be much much better that need to put those MSG, soy source, etc

just like the fresh japan wagyu or aus fresh beef, with just some salt already damn good

My bad.... it was omelet...

It is indeed quite pricey. I think I bought that Swiss roll (iirc, or a cake) for like RM7 each iirc but it was so worth it. My family and I joined a tour for the trip and they mostly left us at night market for dinner. Luckily bought lots of Swiss roll, otherwise it would be an even worse experience food wise especially for my 2 years old son.

In fact what I enjoyed most are their bakery stuffs. Expensive but taste good. I think the only food that I would grade is the dachang bao xiaochang in tai chung night market. That was the only one that taste good enough to recommend. I even queue an hour for it since the tour guide swear by it when I complaint about the poor food we get from the previous 2 night market in hualien and tai nan. Got so sick of night market that I skipped the taipei one when I saw the crowds. My bro did said he had a good mango saimailou. Even when in jiufen, saw many people tried dessert but I think so so only. IMO snowflakes sunway taste better. Beef noodle also did not taste better than MY Taiwanese eatery.

Was thinking wanna go again but own tour. Then can try and see if can get much better food than my previous experience.

HK food is ok ok , their morning breakfast sucks, they eat same shit Set A to Set E every morning , in msia we can easily get more varieties of foods in 1 restaurant. really  puke.gif  and i stop eating breakfast for few months when i working there

the expensive food is nice, those high end one. if wanna eat wantan mee read review first, some nice some really sucks

for most people, HK is a place that you won't feel like going for 2nd time , and japan / taiwan you can go many many times.

lol shenzhen nothing special too, big cities nothing special, everywhere same

QUOTE(bergstein @ Aug 20 2023, 03:02 AM)
anyway feel like sharing some of my favourite foods (tasty/kinda miss/hard to find elsewhere/value) I had in taiwan:
*
the lychee liquor is this one?
https://www.bunnyville.ca/product-page/liqueur-lychee-700ml

or this one?

nope nope and nope....
i went there twice 10 years ago (time really fly).
when back again last year with kids and waifu this time.
last 2 round with waifu as gf.

i think a lot of subtle change and i no longer really enjoy taiwan.
last time i keep praise them one. i think inflation and covid played a role.

1. food dont feel as cheap compared to MY. last time feel cheaper and nicer than MY. now feel as expensive as MY. reasonable but definitely don't feel cheap and worth it.
2. night market feels not a lot of stalls now. i don't mind if stalls sell repeat stuff but really feel less stall. that includes places like feng jia and ximending.
3. food variety also seems less. but i might be bias coz this time with mum and kids, our options are limited. but even observing seems....less....

plus come back time baru realize.
yen has been dropping like shit.
should have use that money to go japan for the first time.
maybe more worth it.

Somebody else necroed, just join the flow, didnt realize its 2 years ago.

Had went to Japan 4 times, the food is great to my tastebuds and safe a lot with that tourist day pass. Would go again if finances allow it.

Can't really travel overseas now as got baby, mostly are just planning if could fly abroad in 2-3 years more time. Kinda missed walking around those places after seeing those memory triggering photos.

considering i'm a fellow father myself, and a cheapskate, here's some tips i personally practice.

1. if you are going oversea trip (and expensive one) when your baby is still small, dont hide behind your baby and say "oo..its for the baby experience", they dont have clear memory maybe a bit but not clear. if you want to go, yes go, but its for either you or your wife's wants, not the baby.
2. airlines usually have kids ticket when they are 2 yo or younger. its like 10% of full ticket. maybe depends on airlines. check ahead. take a flight trip at least once. coz anything beyond 2yo, its a full ticket price. take advantage of it for everyone, when its closer to 2yo then they might have better memory of it.
3. as above, better save the money. imagine. if your kids are teens, you already no money cause keep spending on them. they told you they never been anywhere. you talk them you all went europe, japan, etc when they 3-4-5 yo, what do you think their response is? of course they say it doenst count coz they cant remember or enjoy so small. you might as well save the money for when they are older and can create clearer memories.
4. but that should not stop you from going on trips, do lotsa road trip, that's cheaper and enjoyable. its a time to get out of norm and relax. when they are older, maybe can go furrther, like thailand, etc.
5. locally, many attractions have different kid's ticket requirement, mostly is like 90cm, o 2 or 3 yo. so check it out and go those zoo, park, etc when they are still eligible for children ticket. dont baru birthday kena bayar full price baru tau. start prioritize and go to places like 90cm first, then 2 yo, then 3 yo.

my kids are now 9 and 6yo. sometimes they say the last trip is their best trip ever. it doesnt matter if its hatyai or melaka or cameron lol. even if we have brought them to taiwan, etc. might be due to going with friends.

actually its quite cheap if you dont take driver and cars.
apart from flight, which you can book in advance and know price.

hotel, food, train/subway within city is not too dissimilar with local spend.
of course, you go travel you splurge more. but thats another topic. the price is about there.

I went last year and 3 adults 2 kids. all in i think 20k. including flight, hotel, driver and car, which, kids no kids dont matter.

both me n waifu been craving hard for some good chinese meal..while taking a short weekend to visit MY would never be enough, we set our eyes on Taiwan.

it's very convenient as the local airport (Komatsu) 20 min away has direct flight to Taipei, and best part of the airport is free parking (for like ~2+ weeks) when taking international flight

quickly put together a 3 days 3 night trip, only need take one day leave.

Very nice stained glass at the departure area

short and smooth 3 hours flight, imigration suck ass, very long queue..
both unlucky, didn't get anything from the lucky draw sad.gif

Airport express straight to Taipei main to check in and drop off the luggage first before first round of dinner.
Transport fare are pretty cheap, but got too used to JP's JR gate speed, felt the fare gate was pretty slow.

Nice Taipei main station

since no particular plan of what to eat, so simply walk one round and decided on braised meat rice. seems pretty popular store, no place to sit and many ppl queue but not sure why the auntie just let me and my wife sit in front of the shop, skip queue and order makan laugh.gif

I don't find Taiwan nice. Very salty.

the only thing i find pleasant there, is the streets r clean, the taiwanese people are very down to earth people.

5d trip for me too short la..better extend it to 8 days or so.
but if you stay in taipei only maybe okay la. still longer a bit better, with kids you will "waste" abit of time.

i do recommend taiwan zoo, ticket is cheap + enjoyable. plan to be there for a whole day, no joke.
there's also cable car beside the zoo.. mao kong. but nothing there la..maybe i dunno what to explore. for its like penang signal hill, overhype, go up. nothing.
