Same way as stored electrons in lithium ion are changed to kinetic energy

What do you think a hydrogen fuel cell is?

*
Do you know the difference between Ion and Gas form?

In my first post, I had already mentioned neither ICE nor Fuel Cell make sense if it can be easily electrified (means like OCS used in train).

Production of hydrogen is highly inefficient and storage is extremely difficult.

Both of them generate/release electricity to power a electric motor

That is my point to your original comment:

Both are"'electrified"

But I see your point about Overhead Contact System in the context of train

I don't work for Sarawak Metro, and I'm not their spokesperson, but as an outsider, both the ART and the feeder buses are planned to run on hydrogen. No one is doing OCS with a bus, and having hydrogen for both the ART trunk and the feeder buses would make economies of scale for production

The issues about hydrogen production and storage have been mentioned before in this thread, and I do not intent to reventilate it. My POV is that we are at the stage of VHS vs Betamax, HDDVD vs Blu-ray, and I will let history be the judge.

My personal view is that the world is big enough for different fuel types for different use cases

Not only OCS, for public transport, now they are using super capacitor. Can charge within 10 seconds, and can last for 10 ~ 20 min. This is ideal for public transport like buses. Can charge rapidly at every station while passenger getting up or down.

Hydrogen is the very last or least popular choice. Because it is difficult to store and will cause hydrogen embrittlement to its container.

The Kota Samarahan portion of the tracks are all on the ground level, which is easier to construct & complete. But a major part tracks going in Kuching itself is going to be elevated tracks. A lot of constructions are currently going on, causing inconvenience like traffic jams and occasionally burst water pipes (please don't dig it up again). If it can be completed on time (ie services commence at the end of 2026), then it would be good for everyone.

Premier: Unimas to be part of hydrogen-powered ART route

KUCHING, Oct 23: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will be included in the ongoing construction of the hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) route from Samarahan to Kuching, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said this forms part of Sarawak’s efforts to provide green mobility through the use of hydrogen energy.

“As a first step, we want Unimas to be part of the programme where we are building an ART station from Samarahan to Kuching along Unimas,” he said when speaking at the 11th International Conference on Low Carbon Asia (ICLCA) 2025 held at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here today.

Abang Johari further said that a small hydrogen plant has been established in Sarawak to produce the fuel through water electrolysis, generating about 130 kilograms of hydrogen per day.

Although the process currently requires high power consumption of 160 kilowatt hours per kilogram, he noted that recent technological advancements in Europe have helped reduce the cost of hydrogen production, with further reductions expected within the next five to ten years.

“I went to Berlin just two months ago, and they have reduced the cost of producing hydrogen through water electrolysis because of improvements in technology using advanced membranes, and it is now lower than 60 kilowatt hours.

“I believe that within five to ten years, the cost of producing hydrogen will be cheaper,” he added, drawing a comparison to the evolution of computers, which were once as large as a room but are now small enough to fit in our hands.

He also acknowledged that some quarters have questioned the State’s decision to adopt hydrogen-powered ART.

“A lot of skeptics said, well, why does Sarawak want to adopt ART powered by hydrogen? The answer is we have to do something on the issue of climate change,” he stressed.

He explained that Sarawak’s vast water resources and major dams such as Bakun, Murum, Batang Ai and Baleh give the State an advantage in producing hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen.

“Sarawak, we don’t share rivers. We have a lot of rivers. Not only one, a lot. So much so, there are a lot of crocodiles. And these rivers can be a source of producing hydrogen.

“The only area that we have to do a lot of research in is how to produce hydrogen at an affordable range,” he emphasised.

Also present were Unimas Board of Directors chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MuDeNR) permanent secretary Datu Abdullah Julaihi, Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Low Carbon Asia Research Centre director Prof Dr Ho Chin Siong. — DayakDaily

RM1 bln allocated for ART expansion in 2026, Blue Line operations to begin in Q4 2026
By Amanda L

KUCHING, Nov 24: Sarawak will allocate RM1 billion in 2026 under its Alternative Funding initiative to continue the construction of Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) infrastructure and system, as part of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that Phase 1 of the Blue Line Package 1, covering ART stations and the route from Rembus to Riveria, is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Construction on Blue Line Package 2, from Stutong to Hikmah Exchange, and the Red Line is ongoing, while works on the Green Line are expected to start in the second quarter of 2026.

“A sum of RM90 million will be allocated under Sarawak Metro for its operations and maintenance. Efforts to enhance Sarawak’s conventional public transport system will continue in 2026, with an allocation of RM16.8 million to support key initiatives,” said Abang Johari during the tabling of the 2026 Sarawak Budget at the Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

The key initiatives include the implementation of smart buses in Miri City, the rollout of a new stage bus service in Sibu, ongoing operational subsidies for stage bus services, and the construction of a new bus terminal in Kapit.

“These projects aim to improve accessibility, reliability, and overall public mobility across urban and semi-urban areas,” he added. — DayakDaily

Minister: KUTS Phase 1 progress at 33.51 pct, still on schedule despite minor delay
By Kentigern Minggu on December 2, 2025, Tuesday at 11:30 AM

KUCHING (Dec 2): The overall progress of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Phase 1 Project stands at 33.51 per cent, said Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

Delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here on Tuesday, Lee noted that although progress is slightly behind the planned 34.78 per cent, and despite minor variations across work packages, the project remains on schedule.

He said Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd has implemented a Traffic Control Plan (TCP) across all construction zones involving KUTS works, following public concerns over traffic congestion, access changes, road safety issues and occasional disruptions to utilities.

These measures, he added, are supported by strict work procedures, protective safeguards for underground utilities, and close supervision to prevent damage and minimise inconvenience to road users and nearby communities.

“The KUTS Emergency Response Team (ERT) remains on standby around the clock to respond promptly to traffic-related incidents along the ART corridor, working closely with the police, ambulance services and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) to maintain public safety.

“Regular updates are also issued through multiple channels, including official social media, to keep the public informed of ongoing works, expected impacts and safety precautions.

“Despite these efforts, the project continues to face challenges, including narrow road reserves in built-up areas, high traffic volumes during peak hours, limited alternative routes and, in particular, uncharted underground utilities that cannot be accurately located,” he said.

He urged the public travelling along the KUTS project corridor to remain attentive to temporary traffic signs and diversions, observe posted speed limits, and plan their journeys in advance wherever possible.
