Farmers ask govt to find market for agarwood

Villagers in Huaphan province have appealed for government assistance in finding markets for their agarwood which they have been growing since 2011, as they cannot find any buyers.

They called the National Assembly hotline recently, saying local authorities had encouraged people in Vanghay and Viengxay districts to plant agarwood trees, so they took their advice.

Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's Forestry Department, Mr Thongphat Vongmany, responded to the villagers' enquiries, saying that finding markets is a big problem in Laos as many people set up a business in hopes of making a profit without first considering whether it is v iable.

Agarwood became a popular crop about 10 years ago with the trend then shifting to teak and rubber without growers thinking of the potential costs or actual market demand.

Because the villagers pinned their hopes on agarwood, they neglected to grow other crops which would have earned them an income and enabled th em to better their circumstances.

“This should be a good lesson for us so that we don't repeat the same errors. The most important thing is that people produce something based on market need,” Mr Thongphat said.

Almost 10,000 hectares of agarwood have been planted in Laos but villagers have now lost interest in the crop.

KUALA LUMPUR: Compugates Holdings Bhd’s unit, Compugates Marketing Sdn Bhd, has signed a standing agarwood sale and cutting agreement (SASC) with Westwood Marketing Sdn Bhd worth RM43.884mil.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia on Friday, Compugates Holdings said Westwood Marketing had agreed to buy the standing agarwood trees in a one-year term while Compugates Marketing had agreed that it would not sell except to Westwood Marketing in that period.

“Westwood Investment Group took an interest in the agarwood segment due the high demand for its wood and oil with the main market demand coming from China, Taiwan, Japan and the Middle East,” it said.

Compugates Holdings said trade value annually through Singapore was estimated at US$1.2bil (RM4.3bil); thus Westwood Investment Group took a very keen interest in this agricultural segment.

“The execution of the SASC agreement has enabled the group to expand its agricultural related businesses.

“Westwood Marketing is confident that with Compugates Marketings experiences with gaharu wood, it will be able to synergize the business for the both companies, it said.

“The SASC agreement is expected to contribute to the earnings of the company and the group for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2015 onwards,” it said. - Bernama 24/4/2015

It depend on which specie.

A. Malacensis is quite slow to grow.
Mine, when 5 years old can only reach about 2.5m.

Compared to A. Subintegra, at the same age can reach 5m.

A.Hirta and A.Becariana also has slow growth

i am one of the previous staff there. asia plantation capital is in G tower (HQ). they actually assign agent which is Forestry first sdn bhd. the one that call you, they are from Forestry first, not from HQ. its like hond leong bank sell insurance you can buy direct from bank or agent (HLA) example only. but my advise you buy directly from ASIA PLANTATION CAPITAL if u are interested. becz forestry first they practice military style to staff, even for me they did not pay me my full salary, clients who sign up with me before my resignation, the forestry first director change the form's consultant name to his name, so my commission belong to him. so do not support forestry first. they only calling on behalf of APC. after you invest, if u have any problem, they wont care about you, this is how we are taught, thats why HQ have to handle a lot problematic client from Forestry first.

We have the best affordable inoculation technology To be successful in Agarwood planting, you need to get the right species to plant, the proper care, the right inoculation technology and most importantly the market. Usually there are established companies will help you sell the trees in the form of oil with certain cut of percentage sales.
