It's the lease issue. Static rent for many years allowed anchor supermarket like Giant to keep the cost very low. Once these old lease expire, they move out or close whey they can't afford the new lease.

My production manager previously worked at giant. The biggest problem is internal pilferage and when caught they have the cheek to reply "not your company, why kisah so much"

they got replaced by others. also because their quality drop. the 'fresh' food section terrible and selection are bad.

But jaya is actually not the whole teng family but one of the teng jer.

problem is NSK, Econsave are smelly. Giant and Lotus too far from my home. So most of the time buy at speedmart (complaint: limited brand) and my wetgood from pasar tani (after weekend jog)

problem is not everybody like that
people with some money don't go NSK, they'd go AEON

Probably.........I have no idea why Grab would want to buy a grocery chain. If they are thinking to be like Amazon, they better make sure they know what they are doing...in as much as there's a lot of tech and UX around the preposition, they must not forget that a big part of grocery retail is the supply chain and while it worked in the US, it may not work in msia.....simply because americans eat processed foods, coming from the 3-4 food major food brands in the US.......msian still need the sayur, fruits, meats, asian stuff.....and this part of the products and supply are locally sourced, very easy to fuck this up if your good suppliers are chinaman companies still running on windows XP or vista.....

Don't know. My parents went grocery shopping at NSK once cause my neighbour always say hi NSK. After that never go back NSK. They complained nothing is cheap at NSK Vs giant.

It's their unbeatable experience in operating a super market and handling the supply chain lol.

Giant used to be cinis favourite, until tesco come along, then jusco.

once the cinis stop flocking to the super/hypermarket, you know they're done for.
it's not the cinis buying power, but rather their pickiness determines which place represents the best value for money purchase. even when it's slightly expensive, it's justified by being fresh, clean, or better quality as a whole.

this applies only to supermarket goers, not those hyped-up restaurants cinis flocked to and spend 1-2 hours queueing. those are just your regular sohais.

my theory - nightmarket and pasar pagi not as busuk as wetmarket/econsave or NSK since they only there for 1 day per week. so got another 6 day to clean up the area. Econsave/NSK worse since their wet part is in enclosed area.

im toking jaya grocer and village grocer here for atas people shopping. aeon is a level below. i cant imagine anything higher class than this, but then again the top elite will always have other people to do their shopping anyway, they can source it from anywhere.

But lately these 2 months seems increased price. Its not that cheap anymore

last time my taman used to have a big store gaint, we used to walk over. Now tutup only 99 speed mart

long time ago used to be my main place for groceries, and 20 years ago they had even extension shops like furniture, sewing, curtains, etc. Not sure why those retailers kena tutup like 10 yrs back, kalau tak silap.

Was still frequenting them, since good price and much better choice compared to mydin which is their neighbor. And they offered free parking.

But after some time, their vegetable was not fresh at all, not sure why, semua layu layu aje. Even fish and meat was so-so. Hence stop frequenting there. Mydin was just way too crowded to my liking especially during check-out, just waste of time.

My current go to is Aeon Big, cheaper fruits, good pricing for vege and meat. And I like the self-,checkout!

You are right. Giant vege quality is really not as good. Aeon is the best. Coming in second is LOTUSS. Can ignore Bens, Jaya, etc because those are premium price range.
