hi there, i just interested in this thread.. there just so cute..
anyway.. first congrate ya Hun..
erm.. wat is cannibalized.. ?
means the mama eat the baby?
erm.. last time i have pet hamster too.. the mama born baby, but dunno y she eat some.. it that means cannibalized ??
sry been noobie, and sry if i hurt ur feeling..  notworthy.gif
*
Ahh... thanks for the congratz.

Cannibalized means eating up the same species.

Why cannibalized? Here are the reasons:

1) Baby born dead, so instinct tells the female to eat up the young so won't leave a rotting body to attract predators
2) The female wasn't fed properly during pregnancy, so after the babies are born, she feels that to keep alive, she must eat one of the babies for protein to keep herself healthy for any remaining baby. Sometimes eat a few, sometimes eat all the babies.
3) 1 of the babies born is cacat.... or sick and unhealthy, so as to not waste her energy to take care of a cacat baby, she will kill it.
4) Stress, new mothers when they are stressed, they would neglect their babies... and once the babies become weak or die, instinct tells the mom to eat the babies to do clean up of the nest.

If we touch the babies before 2 weeks old, our smell would be on the babies but the mom would not kill them... she would neglect them only and not feed them so in the end also die....

It's been 10 days since the birth of Donut's 2 hoglets heheheh.... Donut is ok, she is really a good and protective mom.

Donut let me peek at the hoglets now.... kinda nice colours... Both could be snowflake.... well, their grandpa Sparky is a snowflake but Donut is not..... Crinkles looks like a Cinicot but some websites he looks like Champagne... but I'm guessing under Cinicot colour and he is a snowflake too.... so now 2 hoglets... one is a salt and pepper snow flake.... got pure white quills and quite dark quills. The other is browner, and has more white quills. Of course now very hard to tell colour until it molts away the baby quills.... Another 4 days and you guys will get to see their 1st pictures heheheh.

1st page got so many info. And you can always Google it.

Most of us here, our knowledge did not drop down from the sky heheheh.... we also Googled. I was one of the 1st few to keep hedgies, and I read up on oversea forums, websites.... just by searching on the Net. Then after that only can share experience.

I just want to ask where can I get the hedgie? and if I put it inside my room.. can they stand air-cond room ar?

btw.. do anyone of u stay in subang jaya? just askin hehe
*
Good good. We support readers thumbup.gif

Anyway, yes, you can put in your room but then you must change the bedding often coz it is always not healthy to have a pet in your room if you do not clean often. Your air cond must be a good 23C to 25C.... do not go below 21C coz if too cold, they may hibernate and is not good for their health.

hmm....
I think I'm gonna put it in the living room.. if no people complain then no need to put in my room better i guess hehe
hedgie wont get disturb by people right when I put in the living room?!

and and and... sorry for asking too much.. but i wonder is there any different if i buy hedgie from pet shop and breeder?
*
My hedgies are in my dining place.... so far no complain coz hedgies if you clean the tank often, won't have smell. They don't make noise too.

Anyway, if you get from a breeder, it would be quite tame... also mite free and better quality.... but that is if you get from a breeder lah. If you get petshop, most likely older than the age they mention, untame and also got mites. Suppliers also will try and sell to end users and the condition is similar to petshops, just slightly cheaper.

Just came back from searching n read all the thread under Pets Wonderland.. other than hedgie there is Sugar Glider which captured my heart when I see the pic T.T
For the moment, I'm kinda hate my self for being a pet lovers who easily get poisoned sad.gif
Since I'm studying overseas now... I think I just can afford 1 pet cuz' I got 2 tortoises at my room now XD
If I buy both sure bang my head cuz I cant resist their face n feels like play with them more than my study lol

sorry if OT... but now I'm confused which one to buy.. hedgie or SG?! haha
can anyone suggest? cuz' I'm quite easy to persuade actually... lol
*
Firstly, where are you studying and how long? You must think of how you are gonna bring back the animals to your hometown and think about is it legal or not.....

I think my hedgehog has dry skin, he keeps scratching too , but i can't see any mites on him, so i don't think its the mites problem.
Should I bath him with a few drops of olive oil ?
Haha, I thought SG needs lots of climbing spaces ?
*
Get oatmeal shampoo.... it soothes the itching unlike olive oil, it would just moist up the skin but not relieve the itching.

There are a few breeders here Hehehe... I'm also one but I do not advertise.... still, we cannot discuss buying and selling pets here so best you PM people.

DO look at Garage Sales.... there are a few people selling hedgehogs there. We also cannot link sales here so go and have a look.

Hedgies are well, easier to keep than gliders. I know coz I got both hahah.

Today Crinkles went off to see new girlfriend LOL.... damn, this sounds funny....

Anyway, most of us use toyogo or felton boxes coz cheap. RM30 can get you a almost 2ft storage box, if you buy a cage, the only cage safe for hedgie is this but then it is hard to put the wheel.

user posted image

This kind of cage may cost anything from RM60 to RM200, depending on the size and brand.... so for us, Storage box is kinda economical and about the same also, just not as fancy lah.

Pet Shack at Sunway Mentari would have all your needs. They got the bowls and bottles there, the right bedding, food also got. All you need is to go to a shopping mall like Jusco or Giant or Carrefour or Tesco, get the bigges box you can find... or use yours that you have lah.

A wheel, cheap ones are around RM20 plus while expensive imported and silent without noise wheels are around RM60 over.... I think Rm80... I can't remember about the wheel price. I use the cheap one coz is the same usage anyway hahaahh.

Hahah.. last time I also day dream alot.... wondering when would Malaysia have hedgehog for sale coz I was reading international forums.... the one day, pop out a few ads... then found 1 seller and I got my 1st hedgie.... that's when all this started.... then my friend and I did a planned breeding, produced 5 cute and healthy hoglets.... then now, i'm continuing hahahah.... they are really cute and independent pets, good for someone who don't have much time for bonding.... but of course this means we must play with them too, not neglect them.

Cute pokimon hahahah....

Anyway, I sexed my hoglets liao.... 1 girl girl and 1 boy boy.... So cute coz the boy boy likes to lick my hand and anoint himself... and he is only 12 days old when I handled them yesterday. Darn cute. Still haven't open their eyes but they look like wrinkled up cactus.

Wait ar, will update with photos hehehehe.

Hahaah... patience, sure can get your hoglet lah heheheheh.... Most petshops here got little knowledge, so best is to look for breeders so they can tell you their experience and also how to care for the pet properly.

In Indo, gliders and hedgehogs are cheap.... RM50 each.... here pricey lah, that's what my Indo classmates told me.... anyway, doesn't matter pricey, as long you get a good and healthy hedgie then the price won't matter.

Haha... if you wanna take Reanne's hedgie... go ahead. Her hedgie is a nice cinnamon.... very docile too. Just that she got 1 of my 1st hoglets, so she wanna concentrate on 1 only.... if you can convince Reanne you are a good owner, then why not?

If you put 2 together, you have to double the tank space.... 4ft and above.... can? Anyway, it is to be safe. They are after all solitary... in natural life, they always forage and walk alone and come together during matings.... most animals are like that. Colony animals, life pairing animals.... they are different but solitary animals do not come together and live with each other even if they meet each other.

Just google these 2 words... "hedgehogs solitary" and a long list of websites that says hedgehogs are solitary.

Some breeders may keep the females together coz they need space, so they put 2 animals in a 2ft tank.... but actually you should need about 4ft of space to make them happy. As humans, we would always think that having pets in pairs is great coz they can have a friend.... but I think better stick to facts than to stick to our emotions.
