QUOTE(bledig @ Oct 20 2007, 04:56 PM)
i just got my hedgehog! smile.gif

so i left it in a cage with a lid over it. It was sleeping when he got home so i thought ok la keave the lid lightly on.

...then i go shop for the togoyo box(its huge!) + wheel + wood shaving etc. Then when i got home, the lid is open! my room door is busted and he's gone! The great escape!

So i looked all over and he's downstairs. I live in one of those houses that have holes between staircases...so i really wonder if he fell all the way down from first floor (gulp). Or he's smart enough to walk all the steps? Luckily he looks ok and active. I cought him with the carpet and put him back inside his cage.

After i caught him i think he's pissed ... he huff and puff go drink water and go hide in corner again. I will pretend to watch naruto and see if he escape again...and this time  i am gonna keep my room door locked!
*
So did you check for mites? Anyway, congrats on your new hedgie.

Well, how tall is your box? Hedgehogs can be escape artist.... so is best to leave the room door closed or purchase a puppy playpen fence to block your door.

I think he feel through the staircase openings lah. Do check all his limbs, hedgies can hide fractures quite well.

QUOTE(GreenNerdy @ Oct 20 2007, 05:36 PM)
Wow bledig...adventurous hedgehog you have there!
tot in your previous post you mentioned you getting a pair? what about the other one? hope you can give them a better home  smile.gif  smile.gif  smile.gif
mine is afraid of height, whenever i stand up holding her in my hand she'll turn round and round with the butt sticking to my hand don't dare to jump, luckily~  laugh.gif
I think i'll name her Vixie, coz my mum keep saying her face looks like fox  sweat.gif  sweat.gif
*
Hedgehogs sure adventurous wan, so always be careful hehehe.

Vixie? Such a cute name. Yah, in a way look like a fox but with all those quills.... heheheh.

Anyway, just update on my Donut, she is 420g today, heavy girl.... I wonder when she will birth since I agak it to be this week but seems no nesting instinct yet... so maybe next week. Yoh, I'm so excited hahaha.

Hahaha.... yah, very anxious loh.

I give her an old tshirt.... it is inside her hidebox now... but when I put tissue, she will carry or push the tissue into her water bowl.... so means not nesting yet I think.

Now I quite happy she litter train, really so easy to keep her now heheheh.

Har? really? My friend said when near due date, hedgie will try and nest by grabbing any material to put in the hidebox... but my Donut push all into the water bowl, all soggy.... bleh.

The wheel looks great. Nice DIY job, what pail did you use?

Anyway, it takes some time. Curious hedgies will run straight away, some just need to adjust and explore it before using.

Anyway, Donut is 428g today! Fat... heavy.... how long till she pops?

Hedgehogs only bite if your hand has a different animal smell or some weird perfume smell. I got bitten by my hedgehog when I handled my dogs and forgot to wash my hands before handling my hedgie. Other than that, have never been bitten for no reason, so far lah. Been keeping for 2 years already.

Correct, porcupines DO not shoot quills LOL.... they just come off if you get poked and the quill gets jammed into your flesh. The quills are loosely attached to the porcupine, but before they defend themselves with their quills, they would rumble at you.... they will stamp their back legs and shake their tails to make the quills sound loud, then they hiss and grunt(I think that's the sound).... if all this fails to scare of the predator, then they will charge and act fierce, if this also fails, they will point the quills at the predator. Cartoon always make them shoot out but in real life, no lah.....

Well, maybe your friend had another type of interesting smell. Coz they do have better noses than us. anyway, when it bites, move your hand away and tap the nose or push the nose away.

hi.. i'm new here. got a hedgehog for about 1 year. did anybody really know about wobbly hedgehog syndrome? read through the info from internet but still dunno wat really is. i suspect my hedgie diagnose with this thing la. his left body side its like very heavy and walk very slow. i'm worried la. anybody can help me. he's about 1 year ++ albino.

Added on October 24, 2007, 6:06 pmthis is my hedgie. name him piggy zai

Wow, your hedgehog is quite overweight. What food have you bee feeding Zai? He could be walking slow coz body weight heavy..... do you have a wheel? Or do you let him out of his tank to walk around?

QUOTE(hungheykwun @ Oct 25 2007, 12:08 PM)
whs is the hind legs i think, not sure if it affects one side only.
help the hog exercise and make sure he can reach his food & water
if u bred him before, u shld probably let the owners who bought his offspring know so that they can look out for this

Added on October 25, 2007, 12:22 pmhere's something for us to ponder about hog being solitary. i have a pair of hogs. 1 male and 1 female. i keep them in a petroom where i used to have my sugar gliders & hamsters. in separate toyogo boxes. but the female always climbs into the male's box & they like to sleep together in the same hidebox. every time i separate them, this happens, she wil climb into the next box.

so much so that i have to put them in separate rooms now to prevent accidental mating. so is it true that hogs are solitary animals? sure we have read about hogs in the wild being solitary but i believe as they get domesticated(in terms of diet, habitat, breeding habits) after generations of breeding , we chg their behavior too.

what do you think, ppl?
*
By nature, they are solitary.... but they do fight. Who knows, the female may climb in coz she wants to breed.... coz animals can smell breeding hormones. When I left my male in the female's tank for 2 weeks to breed, my male got a bitten ear. They sleep together and cuddle together like a loving couple but hedgehogs are not meant to be together.

i bela him for about a year d. recently only saw him got this sickness.. this hedgie was actually from Reanne.
*
La... never say earlier..... Your hedgie just loves to eat hahahah... the last time I saw him, he was such a piggy.... if he lost weight already, then that is good.

I guess for now you can give him the best loh. He really is a happy hedgie, all the good food. If he got WHS, he won't be running on his wheel but you would need to let him walk around your home abit, with you keeping an eye on him.

Hahah... cute cute. They got teeth already.... just that when you introduce solid food to them, you must soak in water first so they get used to it. At about 6 old you can give the kibbles without soaking.

QUOTE(GreenNerdy @ Oct 29 2007, 01:15 AM)
that day i notice there's some blood stains on the wheel together with the poo stains sad.gif
after checking i think one foot of my hedgie's hind legs was bleeding  sad.gif
but for one day only, now ok already...

but she's not eating...eats very little since after quilling...now eat even lesser..
i wonder is anything wrong with the kibbles or something's wrong with the hedgie?
*
Hmm.... bleeding, if foot, sometimes it's the nails... see got any breakage or not.... but if there is no wound then shouldn't be a problem.

If your hedgie is having mood swings and not eating regularly, you can give treats like crickets and mealworms.

Hi,

I've tried searching for some info regarding Orijen & Acana feeding to hedgies in this forum(and prev), but can't seem to find what I need to know blush.gif

I just want to know that between Orijen and Acana, which one is better?

Both are similar to having fresh meats & vege contents, but if not mistaken something in the percentage of something is different(I can't remember tongue.gif)

Can someone help me out?

Owh, and since Acana has separate ones for kitten & cat, which one is better to be used?

notworthy.gif

Thanks!

Both brands also ok coz same manufacturer.... but Orijen is better lah. My Donut and Crinkels are eating Orijen dog kibbles mixed with Acana Adult cat mixed with Eaglepack small breed dog.... Yah, I know sounds a lot, but then it keeps them from becoming choosy if you mix a few brands together when at a young age.

My Sparky, he did got a mixed variety of kibble when young but when he got older, there was one time I just gave RC only.... then now, whatever kibble you put in, he will only eat the RC and leave the rest there to rot. Now he is having his RC mixed with Nutri Source.... erm.... eating everything so ok lah, but he takes his own sweet time to finish his bowl of food.

QUOTE(babymoli @ Oct 29 2007, 02:37 PM)
Orijen & Acana are under the same manufacturer & IINM they are almost the same but might have different percentage on Analysis.

Here are the analysis for both brand:
Orijen Cat
Protein  45.0%
Fat  20.0%
Carbohydrate  15.0%
Moisture  10.0%
Fiber  2.0%
Calcium (min.)  1.6%
Calcium (max.)  1.8%
Phosphorus (min.)  1.3%
Phosphorus (max.)  1.5%
Omega-6  3.8%
Omega-3  0.9%
Glucosamine (min.)  500 mg/kg
Chondroitine (min.)  150 mg/kg
Microorganisms  80M cfu/kg
pH  5.0
Ash (min.)  7.0%
Ash (max.)  7.5%
Acana Kitten
Protein (min.) --- 35.0%  Calcium (min.) --- 1.1%
Fat (min.) --- 22.0%  Taurine (min.) --- 0.16%
Fiber (max.) --- 2.5 %  Omega-6 (min.) --- 3.0 % *
Moisture (max.) --- 10.0%  Omega-3 (min.) --- 0.6 % *
Magnesium (min.) --- 0.09%  ME (min.) --- 4,570 kcal/kg
Carbohydrate (max.) --- 23.0%
Phosphorus (min.) --- 1.1%  * Not recognized as essential by AAFCO

Acana Cat
Protein (min.) --- 32.0%  Carbohydrate (max.) --- 23.0%
Fat (min.) --- 20.0%  Taurine (min.) --- 0.16%
Fibre (max.) --- 2.5%  Omega-6 (min.) --- 3.8 % *
Moisture (max.) --- 10.0%  Omega-3 (min.) --- 1.0 % *
Magnesium (max.) --- 0.09 %  ME --- 4,250 kcal/kg
  * Not recognized as essential by AAFCO

If choose Acana, go for kitten. Coz it may be smaller in size compare to Cat.

p/s: If the pokimon has taken RC all the while, i think you might have trouble in introducing either this brand to him/her. My boy just doesn't bother about Orijen. End up my sumos & sakais (gerbils) take. sweat.gif
*
You got try the dog one? I realize my Crinkles and Donut don't like Orijen Cat but they like Orijen Dog hahah.... weird...

QUOTE(krynzpeaches @ Oct 29 2007, 04:24 PM)
Did you try mix the Orijen and RC together and feed him? I hear that gradually introducing them with new food can work smile.gif

Yeah, I know about White Palace's offer, but it is "extremely" difficult for me to get from him... I'd rather get the 2.5kg and share it with my friend smile.gif

Get Orijen lah, I also beli but then is for dogs. Gliders love Orijen, if I give other dogfood, they tak mau. But I think Orijen is safe for them since it is not too hard and the ingredients is quite natural if compared to other brands of pet food.

Aiyah.... flies come coz the mealworms are damp.... and smelly so of course will got flies come and lay eggs.

The proper way to keep mealworms is by keeping in a basin or deep plastic tray or ice cream box without the lid. Use a bedding of oats and feed only leafy vegies or carrot slices. No cabbage, no apples, no wet fruits or cucumbers..... Leafy veggies like sawi and kangkung are good enough for feeding mealies. Then add additional protein like fish pellets or dry cat food.

Anyway, great update!!!! Donut gave birth at around 12am I think coz I found her with 2 live hoglets at around 1am. Sad to say, she actually had 3 hoglets but she cannibalized one... so I guess that one had a defect. I managed to check the dead one's quills... looks like these hoglets may have more white quills than salt and pepper quills.

Hope both will grow healthy now.... really sayang, only 2 hahahha.... now need to wait for 2 weeks before I can handle them.

The size of new born hoglets.... they are tiny, around 2 inches or less.

Congrats to both you and Donut  wub.gif  wub.gif

You can put in normal plastic box... but make sure the mealworms don't fill up till 1 inch deep and do not cover so no moisture is in it.

Oats, go super market and get lah. Those prestine or any brand would do.

Thanks for the congrats tongue.gif
