My bf has been hand feeding him since day 1, Ive done it a few times too, just offer him a kibble or some apple

I actually read its not good to hand feed them often as they may come to associate your hands with food and this may develop into a finger nibbling habit blink.gif i think just handling them will be enough to bond, perhaps if you want to offer a treat its best to just put it down in front of them?

so far hes never bitten either of us, in fact the only thing he bites other than his food is when we wear a certain type of t shirt. He likes to bite and pull on it to make it streeeeeeeetch laugh.gif

Oh btw Muchan! Ken and Demon were born on October the 16th

some fruit is ok and good for fiber but you must remove seeds

Theres a good list here of what fruits/veg are safe and not safe to feed them
Hedgie Food List

Just want to ask tho, how come he rushes to the food blink.gif do you wait till he empty the bowl then only feed again? or perhaps you do not give enough each serving?
hedgehogs should be free fed, especially when they are young and growing, meaning they should always have food available in their bowl 24-7.

Young hedgehogs would need more food.... but once they reach 4 months, you can stop putting a full bowl and give 2 tablespoons a day. I normally let my hedgehogs finish before refilling the bowl. Less wastage.

Actually 2 tablespoons is exactly what i give now rclxms.gif
( I said they should always have food in the bowl, i didnt say they should always have a FULL bowl....im crazy, but im not THAT crazy)

1 tbsp at night, by next morning is usually at least 95% finished
then i add roughly another tbsp in the morning before i go to work depending on how much is left in the bowl
the amount he eats in the daytime can vary quite alot from 60% to 90%
then at night the bowl is washed and any leftovers thrown away before again adding food

Altho just putting in 2 tbsp at once is easier, i find going by 2 servings is handy for me to keep an eye on his food intake. There is very little wastage since i add on depending on how much is leftover.
Also as im using a water bowl and not a bottle i need to change the water, so putting 2 tbsp all at once does not save me much time laugh.gif

Ditto, Demon going through some extreme quilling recently too sweat.gif
I tried an oatmeal bath this weekend he seemed to enjoy it alot more than baby shampoo.
At first he was freaking out like the first bath then the minute poured some of the oatmeal liquid over his back he relaxed!, i think he liked the smell laugh.gif

Joanne & Matt

Most of your questions regarding food/bathing how to pick him up can be answered by clicking here
do look up the sections on behaviour and cage/bedding/toys as well

Regarding where to buy hedgie things (im located in cheras as well) i dont think there are any places that sell things specifically for hedgehogs, and sadly even if you do manage to find something thats labled "hedgehog food" it probably isnt really suitable for them, unbelievably theres a hedgehog food that contains rasins, and raisins are toxic to hedgies doh.gif
Before buying any food,do take the time to read the ingredients.

High quality catfood with low fat (max 19% ) high protein (approx 30%) is a good staple food, try giving them a mix of 2 or more brands if you can. Supplement this with treats of insects & certain fruits/veg etc few times a week. I cant recall the exact reason but ive read feeding insects everyday is not so good?
Ive read that dogfood can be suitable as well, altho i havent looked into that, perhaps crazymouse knows more about it

basically just look up what kind of food/toys are suitable for them and try searching for things that fit the criteria at any of the 'usuall' petstores,

Demon and Ken really have the same face laugh.gif
tell Ken his brother is doing well, not sure if he likes sleeping near speakers but he sure likes charging into peoples crotches sweat.gif

I did initially want to put him in our room with us and i read that 26-27 degrees is still within the recommended temp but my bf is half polar bear and likes to freeze himself silly and he thinks 26 is yeaaarghhhh!! very warm doh.gif

But then after that i read that they dont adjust well to any kind of sudden temp change
so i decided not to since our hedgies are born/bred malaysian they are probably used to our warm /humid air and may not adjust well to the drop to colder and drier a/c air (even tho 27 degrees is within the recomended temp)

I would really love to have him in the room and be able to hear him playing at night wub.gif but im just not sure if its a good idea

He looks so comfy in that towel, i especially like the pictures of him digging into his foodbowl wub.gif

Have you researched on how to make multilevel cages safe for hedgies?it seems they have a tendency to walk off ledges and they may injure themselves walking off a ledge that 'seems' safe and low. Most places advise to add 'sides' to ramps and 2nd level areas to make it safe,

......actually ill go hunt for some info on this now, slow day at work. plus looking at housing ideas for them is pretty interesting

Edit:

by scratches on the wheel do u mean the plastic has been damaged? hmm...better get one in good condition?
who knows what else is damaged, there could even be some screws loose and cracks.
edit: nevermind, just read that its was metal

Wheel checklist

min 10 inch diameter, 12 inch is best
flat running surface with no holes, if you buy a silent spinner type find a way to plug up the grooves such as duct tape/aquarium safe silicone)
no moving cross bars and spokes
if your wheel cannot attach to the side of the cage, make sure the wheel stand is very stable
something easy to remove for daily cleaning laugh.gif

What do these metal wheels look like actually?
Im using a wheel that kind of resembles a silent spinner, has a stand and can also be screwed to the side of the cage, as everything on the box is in japanese the best i can figure out is its called a happy wheel

lol cool diagram!

That wheel looks fine to me
will the bar thats holding the two stands together rub against his back?
altho that probably wont be a problem if the wheel is big enough

If you are talking about the C&C cavvy cages, i searched everywhere for those storage cubes but cant find, coroplast can find in many bookstores
C&C cages look so cool, can do so much personalization with them, i really wish i could get my hands on some cubes! cry.gif

if your not talking about C&C then im pretty sure most petstores have cavvy cages (metal bars with plastic pan base)

Thats quite a good idea actually
Are there non toxic paints that you can use? or maybe a clear coat that you can apply over the paint
Also you would want to wait till theres no more smell (paint fumes) before putting it back in the cage
but you could make a really nice looking wheel that way

edit: does the urine/washing make these wheels rust?

I think many peoples dogs and cats can get along with their hedgies/other small pets. Also hedgies do have 'some' self defense.

But keep in mind, all it takes is a few seconds for a bad/fatal injury to happen

I have 2 huge (huge, not fat) male cats, im still hesitant to introduce them to Demon

Hes still adjusting to his new home, give him time to relax and get familiar
I dont see any reason at all why you should force him to eat the mealworms by taking away his basic food during this time when hes adjusting>.> please dont simply give suggestions irresponsibly
Just try again some other time
and yes, mealworms are considered treats to supplement their diet with

Edit: Muchan found someone to babysit ken yet?

i didnt ask him to put basic food for like hours right? =s just teaching that there is another food for him and i didnt ask/tell him to put away his basic food more than whatever minutes or hour right?..please dont simply judge irresponsibly..

No you did not specify how long to take away the food for, and that is also a problem
if your going to give advice be CLEAR about it "give advice responsibly"

Teaching him that there is another food for him?

Even if you did specify how long i still dont see any logic in the advice you are giving, mealworms are a treat/supplement, they are not medicine that must be eaten immediately
The animal will eat it when it wants to, there is no reason to try to put it in a situation where is has to.

Sigh....im not here to play word games with anyone im here to talk about hedgehogs
I fail to see how im judging irresponsibly. Its someones pet we are talking about here.
I saw bad advice and i stepped in to point out what i thought was bad about it.
I think im using a discussion forum as intended

Muchan check ur pm later tongue.gif

Hey guys, hows everyone doing, hope you had a good xmas and new year. Ive been pretty busy biggrin.gif

I made Demon a new house for x mas ( It was kind of a present to myself as well lol )

The two tubs are from Ikea. The bottom one is the largest size with wheels and the second story sits in the big one snugly with legs made out of coroplast for extra support, altho they did reduce the space by a little i liked that the legs created a cozy sort of 'cave' area where i have placed his igloo
I got the idea for the ramp from a thread on C&Q but i could not remember the thread title when i tried looking for it to link here. He likes playing in the tunnel so much and he often sleeps in it, its a really good idea for a ramp
I made the ventilation holes and the hole for the ramp using a soldering iron, much easier that using a saw or drill, altho you have to do it outdoors as melting plastic fumes are toxic and very smelly ><. The hole needed very little filing and sanding to become nice and smooth.
His wheel is something with a label in japanese that looks identical to the silent spinner (price is also the same i think)
However i have modified it by sealing up the slits using aquarium safe silicone. I use both the stand and made a hole so i can screw it to the side of the tub.

I think that just about covers everything, now for the pictures! (All taken with camera phone some are a little out of focus)
