Hi all,
On the lookout for some decent adventure touring pants with hip and knee protector. Need to cover the boots as well. Need not to be waterproof but a bonus if it is.

Been checking out Revit, KLIM, Alpinestar etc. but without much success as there are very little reviews especially for hot humid APAC countries.

Anyone has any suggestions?

Thanks,
*
I have the Alpinestars andes v3. Has everything u need including waterproof except for the hip protector which u can buy separately.

Used it for long rides...a 9 day ride and a 15days ride with abt 8hrs on the road each day. No issue with heat and no issue with water leakage...note that my boots r waterproof as well. I also wear compression pants as inner pants.

Only thing is the hip.protector i couldnt find in Malaysia so had to buy from sportbikeshop.co.uk. not that expensive but once fitted, can barely tell its there.

Also have an rs taichi mesh pants....forgot model..also has everything u need..also very comfy n airy...but i have hung those as i prefer waterproof pants since i dont really stop rain unless its super heavy.

These 2 i think is more of touring pants rather than adventure touring.

Waterproof pants r fine for our weather...legs get abit warm its fine...body gets warm then it becomes a problem.

Hello sifus. My friend is leaving the country and I'll be inheriting his bike. So going around looking for gear now. I'm already sorted in the helmet/jacket/trousers/boots department.

Just looking for gloves now.

After reading up a bit, it seems like the Five Gloves RS3 seems quite promising (with thumb and index finger being touch-capable). The Alpine Star Copper was recommended by someone I know, saying it's a good pair.

What's the general consensus of the sifus here? Are they worth it? I've gone to a shop and tried a Komine glove (don't remember which model, but it had both index and thumb being touch-capable).

I quite like the price point of the Alpine Start but the lack of the thumb part being touch-capable is a bit of a turn off.

On a slightly different note, how much smaller/bigger are those brands as opposed to the Komine? I've tried the XL on the Komine and they seem to fit alright. I've read that Alpine Stars run small; discussion say to size up.

Any shop recommendation in KL/Selangor where there's a large option to choose from? Have gone to Hodaka and they don't really have that many gloves in XL.

Btw budget is around RM200, if that helps with recommendations. (I'm also a total noob; no riding experience, so better safety and comfort trumps all)

the whole AStars sizing thing...go to a shop and test urself.. those are usually talking mat salleh sizes where they tend to be bigger than us asians.

at RM200 i doubt u can get anything other than RS Taichi or Komine low end gloves. AStars are gonna be costlier. not sure about Five shorty gloves though....i do own a low end Five gauntlet and theyre much comfier than my mid range AStars gauntlet.

id highly recommend u look at RS Taichi if the touch screen thing is important to u. i find that Taichi is better than Komine's where the touch panel is at the tip of the finger vs Taichi's which are at the fingerprint area instead. i find that touch panels at the tip are annoying as hell.

plus side of the komine is they usually have the palm slider on even the lower end gloves.

also, those sub 200 textile RS Taichi gloves are some of the comfiest gloves ive ever worn...and ive owned about 4 of them over the years....still own a Taichi shorty but its leather n more expensive. also currently own a komine shorty leather. The Taichi is comfier.

id recommend u look at bikeworld kepong... check their FB page... they have some discounts pratically every weekend and all 4 brands of gloves are sold there. other branches of bikeworld also have weekend discounts but for diff items.

not really... ur better off buying those foam grips aka grip puppies...they can even be cheaper.

also try finding the heaviest bar end u can for ur bike if possible... heavier than stock

Do you guys wear touring boots for long distance or just street boots that covers above the ankle only.
kinda hard for me to find touring boots that is wide and not made of hard material because one of my feet has bunion

and for gloves do you go with those that covers above the wrist? or just street gloves..
*
Touring boots for me..i wouldnt recommend steel toe safety boots. If they get crushed, itll crush ur toes.with it n can be difficult to remove. This happened to a friend on a low speed accident years ago.

Same as kaboku...Started with textile shorties and now onto gauntlets... Didnt like the wind blowing my jacket sleeve up and the sun causing a line near my wrist.

If one were to buy helmet overseas (in japan or indonesia) in person. Would the kastam disturb you when you bring back to Malaysia?

Some of my riding buddy would just throw away boxes and remove any product sticker/tag just to show to kastam that it is used item.

Noticed most helmet these day doesnt come with sirim sticker anymore. Would they use this reasoning to kacau me?

Reason, I dont really trust local helmet shop seller whose main goal is to sell and earn commission and its not their interest to provide best fitting helmet for the buyer.

Unless there is a multi-branded helmet shop that I can go and visit and try everything without pissing off the sales person when i walk out empty handed blink.gif

Saw Takong Racing and Durian Bikers were one of the few that carries multiple brand in store.

There this old otai shop at pertama complex (think called mercinda racing) seemed legit too but not sure if still hold true in 2025?

Also saw this link too https://www.bikesrepublic.com/english/archi...met-regulation/

1/ yes...kastam CAN legally take the helmet from u as importing helmets require permits...if they take it away, there is now a somewhat simple process for you to get it back. Note that the helmet MUST have at least ECE tags to be able to get it back...n japan doesnt bother with ece tags for helmets sold there. A friend bought a shoei neotec 1 and a neotec 3 in japan....no ece tags on both but the same model has ece everywhere else

Indonesia has some with ece...but alot doesnt.

2/ yes, throw away the box and pack the helmet in your luggage... Basically dont la show them u bought a helmet when walking thru customs.... I went to bali n bought a helmet n packed in my luggage...just threw the box away je..all other tags, stickers etc still on the helmet...its ece certified so if kena rampas i know i can get it back

3/ legal requirement in malaysia is sirim and/or ece. Must have at least one of these. Can be sirim+ece or sirim+snell or ece+sni..bla bla bla...janji ada sirim or ece, itll be street legal. Sirim is mostly for helmets manufactured in malaysia.

4/ u think japan or indonesia not trying to sell stuff oso? I went to naps in japan tgk2 helmet, nobody cares...bali tgk helmet, the feller just stand next to me je... Dont trust the shops to get proper fitting? Do ur own research n help urself....in the end the sales staff cant feel if ur getting a headache or not...its ur responsibility to go n test the helmets..no matter which country the shop is in. Unless u buy something like a shoei which has personal fitting services, then diff story....thats also available here.

5/ practically all shops sell multi branded helmets, those that dont are specialty shops like shoei. Theres welly bt caves as well... Dont worry abt leaving empty handed, u wont be the first to do that n they also understand.

Honestly, if the exact helmet u wanna buy is available here, just buy here n save urself the worry n hassle. Only reasons its ok to buy overseas...

- SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper...if only rm50 or 100 diff dont bother.
- exact helmet not available here
- diff specs for our market vs there

Ive bought 2 helmets from outside the country...

1st was rm1.2k here n rm800 in sg...someone helped me bring it in..he had lubang though.
2nd was from bali...a kyt ttr-jet. its actually rm50 more expensive in bali than malaysia but i bought it coz malaysia uses double d n i wanted micrometric strap which is indo market specs.

I saw a very nice full carbon fiber helmet in japan that i wanted badly but it didnt have ece...so not street legal...so didnt bother.

Speaking of kastam, if buying motorcycle clothing no issue kan inside checked luaggage? Like getting certain RS taichi or Komine stuff that are unavailable or forever out of stock here in KL.

Oh yes, I saw locally have shoei fitting system but I dont know if there equivalent for Arai or other brands?

For sure I need someone who is experienced to point me to the right helmet for a start instead of letting me try endless model and figuring out how the fit on my head.

You know like the system can see how your head and automatically recommended few helmet that theorectically suit my head well
*
Other gears no problem..just helmets.

Hjc had a fitting program a while back..not sure still have or not.

What system? U can measure ur own head to see ur headshape n then check out reviews n see what kinda head shape the helmet has

System in the sense that you put in some figure onto it and it will narrow down to certain models that fit your head profile
Speaking from my visit to prescription glasses and road bicycle shop which had similar system to narrow down the right model for the person.

Or maybe I am thinking too far ahead laugh.gif

got such a thing meh for motorcycle helmets? never heard of this....never seen in on youtube.. or online articles... or anywhere... i wear glasses too and oso never had anything like that... just go n test je.

which shops have u gone too so far? what helmets have u tested n whats ur budget for helmets? what kinda helmet ur looking for? what kinda features u want in a helmet?

somehow i feel ur just overcomplicating things for urself. most helmets fit the headshape pretty well. u just need to make the effort to go and test it out... most dont even need those personal fitting for the helmet to fit well. the personal fitting is more to making the helmet fit better.

full carbon is good even for daily (which i used to do). the lightweight helps with neck fatigue especially on long rides. my full carbon helmet is one of the reasons i now am very concious of buying heavy weighted helmets.

*

I wouldnt recommend them now...what a letdown, once in a 40 minute medium-light, and today in a 40 minutes light rain...CE WP rated shoes masuk air, walaupun baru oil it up.

The thoughts of going into office with dry kaki is now another dream...not to mention how quick the leather turns rustic..like vintage worn out despite being a months old...shouyld have just pakai Crocs saja...

What pants were u wearing when it rained? Waterproof boots will only be effective if ur wearing waterproof, over the boot pants as water can still get in the top. N the pants will need to go low enough so that even if its flapping in the wind, the top of the boot wont be exposed....so the boot also needs to go high enough lol

Learned this the hard way n still suffering the consequences years later.
