A good explanation but then the funny part CN one which is non official will get 5g out of the box
For example my OP9 and Razr2022 😂

That's because OnePlus and Motorola are considered "known brands" by our telcos. Another theory is that Google has no SIRIM certification at all in MY (unlike brands like OnePlus or Motorola etc), which explains why the telcos do not want to recognise them fearing penalties.

This is the FAQ from our DNB (Digital Nasional Berhad):

Does DNB certify and approve devices to be 5G-enabled and how long would it usually take for a 5G device to be “certified” for use in Malaysia?
DNB does not certify nor approve 5G devices. We only provide facilities for the manufacturers to conduct tests such as initial static tests, as well as a test route to conduct their on-the-road drive tests so their devices can be configured, and firmware updated to be compatible with the 5G network.
Meanwhile, device certification is led by SIRIM – with guidance from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) – as is standard procedure.
Customers are encouraged to check with their service provider and/or device manufacturer for the best 5G-capable devices within their budgets.

If i have 2k to spare for a phone with superb camera, is Pixel 7 the only choice that I have in the market?

Just concern that pixel 8 is coming out soon....
*
Even if 8 is out, it will definitely be closer to the 3K mark. So if you only have 2K to spare, I guess the 7 will be the better choice. I'm really satisfied with the camera of my 7, I've been using DSLRs or mirrorless previously but nowadays I travel only with my 7 and it's taking nice photos too. So I travel so much lighter these days. biggrin.gif

Great to hear! How's the reception network like? 5G still unsuable?
*
I'm currently still running on LTE because 5G is only available on UMobile for the 7 series without root. So far so good on LTE, it's been pretty stable after the last QPR update, before that we had problems with dual SIMs.

No issues so for me so far. Perhaps you'd like to check your Phone app's permissions if Call Logs & Contacts are allowed?

I'm guessing this is already common knowledge to most of you but it doesn't change the fact it's frustrating as a Pixel 7 user. Was out
having coffee with a good friend and he is using a U-Mobile SIM on his Moto Edge 30 with 5G connectivity straight out of the box. And
being an ex Nexus and Pixel user himself, he decided to switch his U-Mobile SIM into my JP spec Pixel 7 Pro to test 5G connectivity. As
expected, the phone immediately switched onto U-Mobile's 5G network in Johor Bahru and delivered 1180 Mbps download and 148 Mbps
upload speed. Being a Maxis user for many years now, I am still struggling to even get a straight answer from Maxis as to why they can't
support 5G connectivity on the Pixel 6 and 7 range without having to root and go around in circles.

Cheers,
V.

dont think so since 5g is telco related  sweat.gif

If you look at what happened to UMobile's case, seems like both parties need to work together. For UMobile, their 5G works after the P7s are updated with the June patch and I believe UMobile also opened up their 5G to P7s.

So we can only hope that Google will open up in A14 and Maxis also allows any phones with 5G to connect.

anyone using stan chart cc? just wondering whether can tie to Google wallet, planing to apply one
*
So far I've been using PBB CC through my Google Wallet. Everything working like a charm so far so good, even used it in BKK earlier this year. Just make sure the CC that you apply for allows you to link to Google Wallet, just check with the bank for details.

Heard someone on Celcom got 5G after upgrading to Android 14. Not sure how true is this unless someone here can verify. Seems like it's going merry go-round with the 5G thingy here. 😂

This is definitely a fake news. Celcom, Digi, Maxis, UMobile and YES do not provide 5G support for Pixel 7 on Android 14.
*
Yah they probably misled us by not mentioning QPR1 Beta 2. As of now, seems like only those on A14 QPR1 Beta 2 are capable of getting 5G on Celcom & Digi. Not sure about the rest of the telcos though.

The things we pixel users have to go through to get basic 5G coverage. Unsure why Google is so picky with this. Only reason I'm using a pixel is for the camera and UI. Nothing beats it.
*
Fully agree on this. The camera and UI are the best.

Yes. Only difference is that the JP unit couldn't turn off the camera shutter sound.

Care to share what APN you changed to for roaming on HK on Maxis?

unet or max4g?
*
By right it should be unet. Previously when I went to China, I had to change it from max4g to unet in order for mobile data to work.

Anyone updated Android 14 November security patch?

Reportedly released but still no update for my P7 after pressing the "Check for Update" a few many times.
*
Yup it's still not here yet. Surprisingly this round we're getting it late. For the past updates, I'd usually get it within few hours of release.

Interesting that they're rolling out QPR2 beta already, whereas QPR1 stable will only be out next month. Let us know how's your experience with the QPR2 beta, especially if 5G is still there. biggrin.gif

Perhaps it's related to the following known issues:

Known issues:
- An issue with some apps that use the meta-data element unconventionally prevents these apps from being installed by the system.
- Sometimes when a user unlocks the device using their fingerprint, there is no haptic feedback.
- For Pixel Fold devices, sometimes after a user unlocks the device while it’s folded, the inner display doesn’t turn on after unfolding the device.
- The Assistant At a Glance widget sometimes displays weather information for the wrong location.

Thanks, i guess problems mostly lies with Maxis and their settings, and their roaming charges are not exactly cheap

Which APN did you use? If it’s max4g then you’ll have issues. You need to use unet for data roaming to work.
