That's a great tip, Aneip! Jchin should be jumping with joy now. tongue.gif

Don't know about others but my iPhone kinda wakes up even when it is on Aircraft mode when it detects an active cell tower. Had to turn off the iPhone instead of leaving it on Standby Aircraft mode twice while making the approach in Charles de Gaulle at 2000 feet.

Not that I'm asking everyone to start turning on their iPhones while in flight, but just a reminder that the Aircraft mode may not really disable the network.

Anything but 7.4.2 and above. I used 7.3 to unlock, and now have moved to 7.4.1 so that i can get the iPod Touch to sync with iTunes (iPod Touch only syncs with iTunes 7.4 or later).

I can add on point # 3 and # on that list. Videora or PSP Video 9, i have tried, gave a so-so PQ (picture quality) compared to the solution using Quicktime itself. Remember Quicktime and iTunes works hand in hand, so much that they are paired together for the installation download. Therefore, it is only logical to think and surmise that a video export using Quicktime will give the best video result with minimal pixellations and artifacting. I am very picky (read:anal) when it comes to video, and am willing to wait for hours upon hours for videos to finish encoding to see if they give the best result. If they dont, im more than willing to do the re-encode again, with other different sets of parameters, or change to different encoding solutions altogether. It is through my findings that, the MPEG Streamclip + Quicktime combo gave the best picture quality for movies encoded for the iPhone. In fact, latest version of Quicktime/Quicktime Pro even provide video export tab for "Movie to iPod/iPhone" for easy one-click movie exporting/conversion.

Personally , i have tried Videora and PSP Video 9, both gave very noticable pixellations and artifacting (that ugly blockiness due to inefficient compression used by these two programs). The solution im using, the "MPEG Streamclip + Quicktime" avoids this mess.

Why im using the MPEG Streamclip is so that i can have my movies RECOGNIZED by Quicktime as Quicktime .mov file extension. I find that the export/conversion from Quicktime-to-iPod/iPhone to be seamless and troublefree if you do it this way. Also take note that on some occasion , if you do direct export from within Quicktime itself, WITHOUT changing it into a .mov file format, you will lose audio. This is because Quicktime cannot demux and reencode audio properly, other than the recognized .mov format. This is the reason why i use MPEG Streamclip, this program enables me to export any movie file extension into .mov so that the conversion within Quicktime to an iPhone-compatible movie is seamless.

So basically:-

Any movie file format ==> MPEG Streamclip===> .mov Quicktime===>"Export Movie to iPod/iPhone" single click in Quicktime = pixellation/artifact-free movie for your iPhone.

As for point #5, I have tested the Garmin Nuvi 660 which i use as my GPS device AND Bluetooth answering receiver + speaker when im on the road. It pairs nicely, and im able to answer phone calls via the Nuvi itself without any complication. All my other SE, Jabra and iClip BT headsets works as well, so it is safe to say most if not all BT headset works.

EDIT: The shortcut to enable the Voicemail SingleTap have been posted on the 1st post of this thread.

Im not really bothered by the black bar letterboxing of these movies, these are what they are shot at, and meddling with them by fixing aspect ratios will result in either chopped off sides or stretched movies. Having a non-pixellated movie running is top priority rather than filling the entire screen.

The Voicemail singletap also works on Celcom, the number is 1313. Anybody with Digi wants to confirm the code works on them as well? Wei, time to update the first post , i guess.

stringfellow, how do you handle multiple movies then? Or you do it one at a time?

I do concur that Quicktime produces nicer movies compared to others out there, but I can't stand having to click one movie at a time.  biggrin.gif  With proper settings, iSquint/VisualHub on OSX comes very close to the output of Quicktime exports with significantly less time involved, even my C2D MB.

I guess I'm not just as anal with movie quality biggrin.gif

Im not going convert-crazy with my movies, just stray video clips and music videos that i happen to come about. Im thinking of fitting in entire season of Heroes in, but the effort of doing so turns me off.

From what i heard, they probably start selling iphone here around February next year tongue.gif

And did you know that pak lah also using iphone? summore got official warranty from AT&T Malaysia wink.gif
*
Let's think this logically. Look at Apple's business model. They use telcos to subsidise the cose of the phone in all areas they launched at. This is not going to change until the contract agreement expires, with AT&T contract being the longest, 5 years.Which means 2012. If they do release a sim-free iPhone, this is going to infuriate the users from other regions that had theirs sim-locked. Coupled with the fact that iTunes is not even released properly here, and Malaysians had to sneak about using iTunes Gift Cards to get their songs here, where does this lead to? ZERO Apple support presence here other than their iPod lineup.

QUOTE(hokkianu @ Oct 7 2007, 10:13 AM)
below are few points that i feel that use iphone as my pda rather than a phone: rclxub.gif
1) no mms
2) bluetooth cannot pair to other device (only headset)
3) cannot send multiple sms recipients / forward sms
4) camera cannot take video / zoom
5) no 3g/video call

but in conclusion, the super cool interface already can overtake all the above issues  tongue.gif tongue.gif thumbup.gif

From the new firmware 1.1.1, BT a2DP profile is there, although still not activated yet. PAtience, they will release them in firmware updates sooner or later.

Yes, yes boss im here! Kasi can lah, just got back from Shanghai! I'm gonna read up on the details on how to do the downgrade, but last i read, there arent any software approach to this that enables the phone function of the iPhone IF your iPhone comes with 1.1.1.

QUOTE(mamet @ Oct 7 2007, 09:50 PM)
I thought asian version got 3g..
anyone can confirm me with this.?

The article in Anandtech had proven that the addition of 3G into phones seriously shortens the battery life of these phones. Should Apple decides to include 3G later, be prepared for:-

1 - A FATTER iPhone. Have fun with PorkyPhone.
2 - A removable battery iPhone. No more sleek smooth looks.

This is not going to happen, until advances in technology in 3G power consumption inside phones improved dramatically enough to justify putting it into the iPhone. A phone is not a phone if it couldnt last through the day. This includes the iPhone as well.

Tishaban, it's works via Turbosim, truly? Im reluctant to go this route because of the consequences, if your telco discovers that you are cloning your sim card, this qualifies as a breach of conduct/contract, and they can blacklist you off their cell network. Not to mention the scarcity of the product and the high price.

I know, wei. But even as i hate responding to questions you can easily find answers to by simple Googling or searching this forum, i hate it EVEN MORE when the possibles answers others may be posting here spreads FUD or answers that may not be correct. This may either result in :-

1 - iPhone gets misinformed and views in bad light
2 - Noobies going gung-ho on their iPhones ended up with an iBrick instead.

I could just simply stand aside and watch the fun unfolds, but i guess deep inside i care. But the lists of things i care about, are getting thinner by the minute, not to mention patience..... laugh.gif

I will certainly miss 3G, i'd like that option in, but im not willing to compromise the iPhone's form factor just to add 3G connectivity option.

To others waiting for an actual Malaysian launch, i bid you good luck and call your chiropractor in on standby. You may have to get into several neck therapy sessions for straining that neck for waiting too long! But hey, if im proven wrong, and Malaysia do get its iPhone, SUPPOSEDLY next year, i'd LOOOOOOOOVVVEEEE to see the reactions of other iPhone users from other regions responding to a sim-free iPhone this early. Apple will be having its hands full handling this mob, not to mention lawsuits and court subpoenas! laugh.gif

Remember what i said about iPhone being a hard case to meet if it is not unlockable at regions that requires unlocks, like Malaysia for example? Not that im claiming to read the future, but read em here:-

iPhone delayed in France due to unlocking laws?
Posted Oct 6th 2007 10:46AM by Nilay Patel
Filed under: Cellphones

We're not exactly up on our French, let alone our French telecommunications law, but we're hearing that Apple's supposed launch of the iPhone in that country is being held up by two different regulations that prevent the iPhone from being the locked-down revenue-generating machine Apple wants it to be. The first, a law passed in 1998, requires that carriers unlock any phone upon customer request -- for a fee during the first six months of a contract and for free after that. Notably, all three major French carriers -- including Orange, which was supposed to get the iPhone -- have lost lawsuits challenging this law. The second, which we're slightly less clear on, apparently requires carriers to sell both locked and unlocked phones. Tensions over the regulations have apparently strained the relationship between the companies to the point where Orange spokespeople are saying things like "the risk we're evaluating this week is that Apple crosses France off," but really, who expected Apples and Oranges to mix without someone getting a little bruised?

This time, it really is a case of "Apples and Oranges"! laugh.gif And um, still pining for that Malaysian launch? wink.gif Apple is ready to "cross France off" just because they couldnt get their business model of sellling iPhones there, what do they care about puny Malaysia which really has smaller market than France, has an open policy when it comes to subscribing voice/data calls , and has zero iTunes presence? Neck massages, anyone? Or do i see the glint in your eyes wanting to rush for alternative means of getting an iPhone now, but realizing it's already a 1.1.1 "gone case" now? laugh.gif

Like anything that leads to opening up the market compared to a market base on performance not "inside help" (read: Proton), this will only get delayed until the profit margins of these "few people" who wants their "periuk nasi" to be kept full and not challenged with, have their guarantees that they remain profitably fat in the long run. Which is why i see, it will never happen, unless the compromise benefits "these people" and when this happens, the consumer have to bear the brunt of the burden.

That's how things work in Malaysia anyway. 50 years of independence in deed!

Bos, the first line on that FAQ you linked me to, states that you cannot unlock it right? Just jailbreak and activate only. Congratulations by the way, you are now an official iPhone user....well, until the 1.1.1 exploit , that is. tongue.gif But at least can use the other functions. Wifi okay? Youtube?

im in no hurry as ive still gitta wait for Maxis !! sad.gif

ASk him, im sure everyone here's interested to know what he did to get 1.1.1 unlocked. Most probably, he got it downgraded to 1.0.2 , patched the baseband and got it working as a 1.0.2 iPhone jailbroken. A 1.1.1 unlock is the holy Grail at the moment, and the Dev Team is getting close with their Tiff exploit.

Oiiii, never use iTunes ka? You can only delete songs using iTunes. iTunes is your content management for photos, songs, movies and podcasts. There are minimal function of deletion in iPhone (deleting Camera Roll photos taken with the built-in camera, deleting movies and podcasts after watching them , the "Keep/Delete" way). Everything else have to be done via iTunes.

Should be soon, they are making headway with the exploit, with access to filetree and directory structure. The same guy from the PSP Tiff exploit has joined in the fun now, so it should be real soon.

I haven't remove the protective sticker from my iPhone which causes me to not be able to hear the speakerphone during incoming calls.
But my speakers are incredibly soft at maximum settings. Theres only 2 speakers below the phone right? Or is there another one that I dont know of
*
iPhone speakerphone is mono, only one of those speaker grills at the bottom of the iPhone holds the speaker. Generally, i dont use speakerphone during conversation, it is soft beyond my liking. You can try searching the threads at Hackint0sh for tweaks on speaker volumes for this.

Added on October 8, 2007, 12:47 pmSame here, i removed mine on Day 1. The plastic really feels .......like plastic....hard plastic. But i had the luck of getting a screen film and clear case holster on the same day i got my iPhone so i can understand the reluctance of removing the only thing protecting the plastic coverings. We all love our iPhones dearly! laugh.gif

Added on October 8, 2007, 3:31 pmGuy, why not we start to compile a list of useful / fun apps to have on our iPhone?
*
Well, to tell you the truth, this is not really necessary. We could compile a list, but we are all using unlocked iPhones with Installer.app on our SpringBoards, so the list of useful/fun apps are technically always there on the Installer. What we could do is list down Web-based apps that can be accessed online via Safari, but its usefulness may wane a little since you have to be online to access them, and not everyone is around a convinient wifi hotspot or subscribed to EDGE.

If that takes off, then i guess that's a good change. I find it hard for the typical Malaysian mindset to change overnight.

If you just did your order, chances are you are going to get 1.1.1 . Six66 just got his and it's 1.1.1.

You dont have to turn off EDGE, you only need to supply an incorrect APN, username and password in the EDGE field. The iPhone defaults to Cingular EDGE on mine, which disables EDGE, but in my case, im on the unlimited EDGE plan, so i had my DiGi setting permanently on the EDGE field.

You could also download "Services" from Installer.app, this app supposedly turns off EDGE for you, although i have not tried it.
