Turn on your iPhones and launch your Installer.app, there's a new version of Installer available for download/updating. The info states "recommended for 1.1.1" so, i only did the update on my iPod Touch's already 1.1.1 firmware. May there be brave souls willing to give this a try and see what fate it portends to 1.0.2 users?

Added on October 21, 2007, 12:38 amAnyone up for this?

That's good to hear. I guess we dont have any choice since loading up Installer will always prompt that it has a new update on itself.

Anyone else tried?

Time to do the update then!

Slightly OT, but Apple related:- I've done scrutinising the list of improvements Leopard brings to the table, and watched the guided tour video and im in love! wub.gif Still holding off purchase, until Leopard comes preinstalled , or that persistant rumor of an ultra-thin Macbook comes to fruition. tongue.gif

Can i know why people are interested to go 1.1.1? Besides fixing stability issues, i dont see any other compelling reasons. Instead , you run a greater risk of screwing things up again (a possible permanent relock, or worst, bricking), for mere peanuts of an improvement. Just saying that for me, if i weigh the pros and cons, the cons outweight the pro waaaaaaaay more.

I know eventually there will be a safe way to go 1.1.1 , but until then, it will be dangerous business going that route. IS the options to double-tap Home button, or international keyboards, or even Wifi iTunes Store that compelling to you?

Well, at least your motivation is in the right place. You're doing this to see if you can get Maxis to work, right?

Until i get a "safe to proceed" green light, and im confident that all my apps are ported and running nicely on 1.1.1, with a fully working phone/call features, im fine with 1.0.2. Apple needs to bring more to the table to entice me to update.

So the back of your iPhone is made to look like wood? IMO, defeats the purpose of having that "iPhone" and Apple logo embossed at the back of the iPhone, the very reason why and how people know you are holding one.

string.. what casing ur using?
i bought a silicon casing n decided not to use it coz it looks clumsy and slightly bulkier (does not fit the charging dock) ,it also lose that "cool" factor.. everyone thinks its 'some PDA'..
yesterday i placed order for bestskinever.. hope i made the right choice
BSE skin's has a dimple texture on the surface which i do not like much
so i decide to use screen protector in front and BSE skin behind.. so i ordered Martin field's screen for this reason..
but my set has yet to arrive.. so currently "uncool" for now  wink.gif
silicon though has an advantage if it drop to the floor.. but touch wood..

Clear case holster, plus a leather one if i feel like it. These days, the leather holster goes to my Touch.

i think we need to organize "bug maxis to fix it for iphone" campaign where we systematically call maxis everyday by different iphone+maxis user. if its scattered, they wont notice the significance of it.

QUOTE(tarpaucase @ Oct 21 2007, 10:35 PM)
Anyone knows any press people?

Maybe a huge banner showing iphone cannot be supported by maxis in the ads will provoke some sort of a reaction..
*
Friendly advice, this act may come back and haunt you later. What i meant is that , Maxis will ask where did you get your iPhone from, and at the time of this post, the only place available is in the US. And by you, stating that you claimed to have been using Maxis network on the iPhone, is a clear breach of agreement between you and AT&T. It may come back and bite you in the rear. Just something to ponder.

QUOTE(antnine @ Oct 21 2007, 09:18 PM)
not just those three things...the turning off of the EDGE, TV output, louder ring volume and also speaker volume...allowing u to view landscape format for your emails...there's alot of benefit indeed...
*
This may not be the case for everyone but:-

EDGE: Im on Unlimited, so it really doesnt matter. You can also disable EDGE WITHOUT going to 1.1.1 by installing Services.app from Installer and staying 1.0.2.

TV Output: Tethering the iPhone makes it immobile, which defeats its feature as a mobile device. TV Output, IIRC, has a maximum resolution of 640x480, which equates to 480p. Standard DVD resolution, not high resolution. You may even have the file on a laptop which plays better connected to your HDTV than using this solution.

Louder ring volume: Simple. Select your custom ringtones. Edit them via audio editors that alters their volume level up, or the fucntion in iTunes may even do this. Sync them in via iBrickr. All this while still on 1.0.2.

Speaker volume: Im sorry, but my experience with the speaker volume is that it is decent at best. Single speaker grill, which means MONO, not STEREO. I assume you have your tunes, or videos encoded in stereo, and having them blaring out of that single mono speaker grill is not really music to your ears. In fact, my music videos, all encoded in stereo, sounds like "speaker pecah" because of this. It sound great on headphones by the way.

Landscape format of your mail: GoogleMail and YahooMail are those i use. If i need those in landscape, there is always the web-version of these mails. And in Safari, you can always landscape it, regardless of whether it is 1.0.2 or 1.1.1.

All these "features", personally, i consider them trivial. They can either be avoided, tackled or solved while staying with 1.0.2.

A more pressing matter here is the issue of multitasking. I find that when im listening to my music while surfing on Safari, any graphic-intensive or flash/animation heavy web pages will either result in crashing the Safari, or freezing music play. This is said to be addresses in 1.1.1 , and im more excited about this than any other benefits you mentioned above.

QUOTE(lailaikatong @ Oct 21 2007, 11:02 PM)
So the very reason you think people own an iPhone is as a status symbol, to tell others that they own one?
*
Feasability of functions being able to be used while out and about is the paramount reason why I picked the iPhone over the rest. I dont know about others. But why do you think the iPods are the best selling MP3 players in the world, compared to the other brands. DAP audio quality? You have that beaten by iRiver and Creative models. Wouldnt you agree that aesthetics plays a huge part here in the general public mind's when it comes to their portable audio player of choice? Otherwise , everybody wouldnt be bothered by looks , buy one of those millions of Chinese knockoffs which are infinitely cheaper and be done with it. It is a statement that you worked hard for your money, and that money is well spent on something you know is guaranteed to give you plenty of enjoyment during your time with it. And that buddy, is why people associate it the iPods/iPhone. Which also means the VISIBILITY of these products make that statement for these folks. Otherwise, why do you think Apple even bother with the Apple logo/insignia at the back of the iPods/iPhones as well as on the lid of the notebooks, and it freaking lits up as well? With Apple, the looks it has comes equally well as its features and functionalities.

So, if you're trying to make me look shallow, with that quoted statement of mine, try again. Did i just answered your question, or are we continuing this witch-hunt? whistling.gif

hey guys, this phone rocks on! Think to get it, if all the major problem with m'sian telco get settle soon. On this evening on lelong site, i found someone sell fully unlocked iphone based on firmware v1.1.1 which he claimed that his iphone runs perfect without problem refer to all carriers' issues before. The iphone he sell also very cheap. Can get as low as RM1900-2200.

I just need ur opinion guys.. http://www.lelong.com.my/Auc/List/2007-10D...ocked_1_1_1.htm

P/s- limyusiong: you're kinda familiar. guess that you're an SE w850i user before rite? so you're now an iphone user eh? how's goin' on with your new phone?
*
A few things about that Lelong page:-

Are iPhones shipped with GPS? No, but this iPhone has GPS installed!
Double You Tee Eff! If he is referring to Google Maps, IT IS AVAILABLE AS STOCK APPS, FOR FCUK SAKE! .If he meant Bluetooth GPS module, he's talking out of his ass. Apple's Bluetooth stack doesnt support any other profile other than headset profile.

Free Ringtones downloaded automatically when you need it.
And hos do you suggest we do this? Download it off iTunes Wifi Store for FREE? Or load i up via iTunes? Or load it up via 3rd party solutions like iToner, which works on 1.0.2 as well, not just 1.1.1.

1-year limited warranty will be provided by Apple.
Yeaaaahhh, riiight! The only way you can do this is revirginize it and hope the Apple Geniuses dont pick up the fact that you have unlocked it.

In summary, this guy is no different from any other of the thousands of clueless traders who wanna make some quick bucks off poor sods wanting the iPhone so bad, or wanting to clear stock of unwanted iPhones.

It is a dangerous move to use Timezone's wifi router. Most, if not all the time, i couldnt FTP or SSH into my iPhone, when i was there sipping coffee. I woulnt attempt jailbreaking, much less unlocking on a public wifi spot, a lot of things can go wrong.

Eh, really? blink.gif You mean during my stint here in the Apple section? If you meant that, it is mainly driven by the absurd hope-pining on the supposedly Asian release of iPhone, while completely , whether consciously or not, ignoring the laid out business plan. My long posts generally reflects that, more like a "bring you back to reality" kinda posts. Other than that, im glad to help others who are having problems with their iPhones and iPod Touches. nod.gif

If it is about something else, you could be a pal and point it out to me in private, in PM maybe? I'd appreciate it much, thanks. smile.gif

Had a good read at ModMyiPhone and the Hackint0sh forum, and weighing my options in. I am THIS CLOSE *pinches thumb and index closely* to giving myself a go-ahead to go for 1.1.1, until i read Erica's comments at TUAW on the current 1.1.1 unlocking method(s) :-

QUOTE
Over at ModMyiPhone, forum user ReVan has posted instructions for revirginizing 1.0.2 iPhones. He write that this method fixes seczones and NVRAMs, presumably restoring the iPhone to its original, locked, and upgradable state.

The method he shows is pretty complicated and based on the work of the iPhone DevTeam, including gray, ipsf, and geohot. Although there's no simple GUI yet, should this method pan out, you can bet someone will soon package it up and make it easy to use.

Update: Another method here at hackint0sh.

Update 2: "DogGunn" aka Josh H. writes: "Watch out! This just replaces the corrupt seczone with empty data. So next update, you may be really [messed up]. Using these methods may be irreparable as there is no data to repair." He suggests you wait for a Dev or Elite release.

Update 3: "Qapf" adds that running this process may expose your iPhone's IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) to others and cautions against it for privacy and security reasons.
Two very good reason to wait. Corrupted seczone data, is like chipping away, bit by bit, the unique phone data footprint that is inside your iPhone. Already the AnySIM AND the iUnlock , have altered and modified this , probably damaging that seczone data. Any future updates on the iPhone is akin to digging yourself into a deeper hole, which you may or may not be able to climb out. Exposed IMEI, well.......if you have been a smartphone user like me, your IMEI is tied to your personal particulars and details, when and where you decide to register for a particular download that requires registration keys or serial generation from the software vendor side. When the integrity of the security of your IMEI being kept from prying eyes (hence, securing your own personal data) is safe with certified vendors, doing these current 1.1.1 methods subjects the user into the virginizing/revirginizing process where they have to input their IMEI numbers and uploads them ,into a test server to trick the iPhone into thinking it is uploading its IMEI into IPSF servers themselves. Even with these disclaimers:-

QUOTE
Disclaimer:
Your ltoken/seczone are being saved to this server.
These could contain personal information.
This is a test server, and will be taken down and have all the info deleted this Monday
The source of the server will be released then.

.....do you trust your IMEI info with someone you dont know at the other end? Are the few features available on 1.1.1 worth this possible personal data exposure later in the future? You decide. Me? I'm taking a wait-and-see approach to see if there are other methods that are much more secure, both in execution, as well as protecting my own security/privacy data.

If what you're trying to say is resetting the phone's usage time statistics under "Settings > Usage", then your answer lies in a "Reset Statisticds" button at the bottom of that screen. wink.gif Hope that helps.

Added on October 22, 2007, 9:15 pmBy the way, has anyone else here had a share of experience with the iPhone Navizon? To those of you who don't know what it is, basically it's a virtual GPS app ported to the phone which maps out your location on a map by calculating the delay from your surrounding wireless APs and cell towers.

Of course, wei here has already mentioned that this app hung his phone a couple of times. In my case, the app works fine, except the 'Locate' function doesn't exactly return with what I expect. Instead, an error message pops up saying 'No Connection To Server', though I was already connected to both DiGi and my home's wireless AP. Be reminded though, you need both wireless access to the internet and your phone service provider for this app to do its magic. smile.gif

I've seen a couple of online screenies via Google, and they all seem to work fine in not only US, but other parts of the world, meaning this isn't another case of US-only exclusiveness. Anyone here care to try it out and share your experience too? Would most appreciate it.

Download >> http://www.navizon.com/download.asp
*
With Navizon, you need two things:- coverage and registration. Coverage in terms of cell towers and wifi hotspots, AND these cell towers and wifi hotspots must be registered inside Navizon database to reflect correct positioning. Otherwise, you may have the strongest Wifi signal near your place, but it wont be reflected when you turn NAvizon on. This works well in the States where cellphone towers are earmarked, and Wifi hotspots are data-tagged and position registered by the users there. The more users registers the position of the Wifi hotspot, the more accurate it becomes, since more position reports means triangulation and averaging out the positions gets more accurate.

Suffice to say, we dont have that numbers here in Malaysia, so the virtual GPS accuracy is way off, and not really suitable for positioning. I tried for a few days, at first with the app locking up my iPhone and the next few tries working (albeit crappily, with it booting me out a couple of times), but the hassle and inaccuracies arent worth it leaving installed in my iPhone. Out it goes!

The stack is upgradable via firmware updates. Apple is using the firmware update as a weapon to entice people to keep updating and avoiding other kinds of unlocking.
