Thats the thing. I did use the stick tapes to prevent the housing from even slight wobble, it stills tick. I thought it was the wire is not balance, but it is not. Finally I just did the holee mod and it solves it. That goes without saying that lubing the stabs is a must. I just use 205 on the wire and the housing internals like what is normally shown on youtube. lolx.

But that ticking once u notice it, it is very annoying. lol. Initially I did not want to take the stabs out to fix it, but finally gave in as it is just too annoying. lol

But probably it is my plate that is not good since from your experience FL-cmmk stabs do not need any mod. I will keep that in mind.

IMO, grease is not needed for stabs that have tight tolerances like C3 Equalz and TX. Still needed for OEM and OG Cherry stabs.

it's fine though. you still have plenty of options to choose from.

i picked jwk/jwick because they make linear switches that fit my preferences. that's why i stick to them most of the times. besides jwick black v1/2 and ultimate black, there are jwick white, red, and yellow. they are all fine imo.

about the pricing of local stock, sellers also need to feed their families. imo as long as the price is fair, it's good.

In your opinion, if the priority is just least problems over time, what would be your choice of switch/spring/lube/mods?

But a the very least, you will be lubing the stabs using some lube, right?
*
Yes, sorry I was unclear. 205 is sufficient for me on the tighter tolerance stabs. For others, grease is needed.

my current takes are the following:
- switch: jwick linear with 4mm total key travel distance, non-silent;
- spring: tx / sprit;
- lube: krytox gpl (oil, grease);
- mods: the essential are switch (at least lubing spring and back of leaf), and stabilizers (at least bandaid mod with ptfe tape; lubing housing, stem sides and hole, wire tips; applying eva pads on pcb to support wires)

it's really important to make sure installation of stabs is done properly. i managed to make tx stabs tick in few occasions. the sound was gone after reinstallation.

edit: in reality, i usually use switches from cherry, gateron, kailh, jwk, sp-star, and tecsee. the overall qualities of switches from these brands are relatively proven. (all of them have 'black histories' in the past, but got improved over time)

i hope later i will have time for younger brands like haimu, ktt, ttc, etc.

Thanks. Just fielding opinions for a build far in the future. Still happy with my Fold as daily driver. I want more of the same but they have discontinued it.

Keebio have promised to open source the Fold PCB, so I'll be looking at that when they release it. Maybe do some minor changes like changing the right space bar from 2.75U+1.25U to 2U+1U+1U.

If I can move my numpad from the red box to the green box I'd be so happy.

this is also a known problem when one is too detached from standard layouts.
*
Also when your preferred layout is too vanilla aka full size 100%. As I found out when trying to make a custom full size. 60-65% is still the most catered to form factor.

the typing feel is like typing on cherry mx pink (or any key switch with mx-style silencing implementations), but not exactly.

I built a numpad using Aliaz silent tactiles before and didn't like em. Combined with the super low weights....yeah I think I'll steer clear of topre.

Just curious, does anyone of you actually bring a mechanical keyboard to your work place?
*
I do. My custom keyboard is tuned for thock but is not particularly loud. My boss punching on his Dell membrane keyboard is louder.

And our shared office is locked whenever none of our department members are there, so totally no issue for me. I have literally a few k worth of keycaps in boxes under my desk...

I walked into a Thundermatch last weekend and happened to see they had Keychron keebs on display. Nice! TBH, I have never handled a full aluminium keyboard before that day. Somehow I managed to spend thousands in this hobby and never owned a single metal keeb other than a KPrepublic aluminium numpad.

I must say I was happy to find out that my own designed and built acrylic casing feels and sounds better than a full aluminium Keychron hands down.

But right beside the Keychrons was a very plain looking TKL. It was within arms reach and so I just tried a few keypresses. And a few more. And a lot more. I furiously began to mash all stabilized keys, moving my finger all along the length. WTF! Here
was a prebuilt plastic keyboard that felt and sounded almost as good as my custom keyboard! And certainly much better than the Keychrons next to it.

I noted down the model, and today finally did some research on this model. Turns out it has quite a number of good reviews as well. It was none other than the Tecware Phantom+ Elite.

Highlights:
4 different foams
Clipped and lubed stabs
Sound dampening material for the spacebar between the stabs and switch
Prelubed switches

Excellent and fun review of the non-Elite model here. Good sound test at the end of this one.

A lessor review, but with better explanation of the differences between the Phantom+ 87, 104, and the Elite, and the 4 different switch options.

Since I have too many keycap sets, I may just get an Elite in the near future and pop one of my sets on it.

Thats the gold point of this 'hobby' every one can enjoy it within their budget range.
For tecware phantom (i got the phantom 104), i don think it is a good keyboard.
for user first time to the mech key, its price might be 'attractive' . phantom elite 104 i think 170~200 on shopee.
but after i use it like a year...all kind of noise coming up.

it definitely fixable if you dismantle it, but most of the people that pay 200+ for a massproduce keyboard will 'DIY' it. (most people, if it sh*t they will change the brand next time and never look back)
*
True. Most people have a bad experience with a brand and never look back. It might be too early to tell if this model will develop problems, it was only released 7 months ago and no one has used it for more than a year yet.

I also had the Tecware Phantom full size KB with Outemo compatible hotswap. It was the first KB that I removed the brown switches and learn how to lube it together with stabs tuning and EVA foam mods.
I still use it but had to replace the keycaps initially as it as broken at the stem. I also cut the USB cord and installed a USB C connector to the board to enable me to easily switch keyboards on my computer.

Separately, recently I was looking at desoldering tool and was recommended to check out the Japan made Engineer SS02. But it cost >RM100 each. After looking around, I purchase the China clone = Frogbro DP-SS02 at ~RM22 on Lazada.
After some trial and error, it was a easy process using it as the soft silicone tip made a big difference compared to other hard plastic tip type.
My process:
1. Add little leaded solder to the existing solder on the hole
2. Heat the hole for a few seconds and hold the solder tip at the hole
3. cover the hole with the pump while the solder tip remains in contact at the hole and suck up the solder

Typically in one go, I was able to clear the hole. for those rare stubborn hole, I just add back some solder into the hoel and do the process again.

I managed to desolder my RK61 switches in about 1 hour in my first go.
Now to change those RK brown( which are so so wobbling that each press just have switch rattle sound) with my left over Akko Jelly purple and tune those stabs.
*
I wanted to get the SS02 as well if my sodapult clone died. But now I might get this instead:
https://www.lazada.com.my/products/frogbro-...0826786487.html

Thanks for the tip.

Also, a tip for you. The reason adding more solder works is because it adds fresh flux, which is in the core of most solders. You can also buy just the liquid flux and use that instead. This is what I use:

actually you can also install the matching silicone tip on those desoldering pumps with hard plastic tip.
*
Yes, I've read that multiple times but keep forgetting to try it! I have to remember to buy some silicone tubing for the next time I need to desolder something. Which is hopefully never, I am still wary of the whole process.

What soldering kit do you use? Any recommendations? Or are they all the same. TQQ

For soldering, most any soldering iron you can find at supermarkets are good enough.

For desoldering, I'd recommend getting something much more reliable and powerful. Something with temperature control. This is what I use:
https://shopee.com.my/KSGER-T12-Soldering-S...605.20490523193

Don't use the K tip that comes with that particular set, get a D tip. I use a D16 (1.6mm) but sifu horns says that that's too small. So probably go for the D32 tip.

https://shopee.com.my/KSGER-T12-D08-D12-D16...605.17275323993

Edit: Actually he uses 2.4, but also 3.2

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 3 2022, 01:01 PM)
ayoyo :/

about tip size, i use 2.4d. i didn't try below that because i thought they might not be able to supply sufficient heat to melt the joints during desoldering. (for my gj907 soldering iron, it's the stock 3.2d)

yes i believe staebies and tx have relatively tighter tolerance. it's a good thing in general, as an option. for builds that need looser tolerance, we can still use everglide v2/c3.

personally for pcb-mount stabilizers, i don't like clip-in. it can be a potential problem if you have keycaps with tight stem holes, and you're not patient enough. (i just pulled out the tx stabs for backspace last night, when i swapped the key set hehe)

edit: also, don't do soldering/desoldering at night lah; shits usually will happen.

anyone have a wireless mech keyboard recommendation? A tkl layout…

I was looking at the tecware phantom +, how are those?

Tecware Phantom + and Phantom + Elite are relatively new. Released last December. They have gotten rave reviews, and from my short test in a Thundermatch, it feels and sounds good! I may be getting one myself if there's a deal on 8.8. I need more boards to put my keycaps on. Haha.

horns Do you find that your stabs' tuning get bad over time? I am getting unhappy with mine recently. Is there anything you do to maintain it? I can't get mine off without desoldering the entire board...

The phantom+ model stabilizers are better than the original Tecware phantom which rattled out of the box without modding.
A better deal is the RK R87 which is RM126 after the RM50 coupon deduction, its compatible with all cherry mx clones unlike the phantom+ which is only compatible with outemu type switches. I think theres less foam layers compared to the phantom+ but theres at least 1 layer of eva btween the plate and pcb which makes it sound decent out of the box considering its price and the stabs don't rattle.
*
The Phantom + now uses Kailh hotswap sockets so there's no longer any switch compatibility issues. In any case, I'm a Gazzew fanboy so it was never a problem for me.

When I was new to MKB a few years ago, Royal Kludge had plenty of bad reviews. I honestly have never owned one, but I have heard they have gotten a lot better these past few years, so I may consider it. Since it's not going to be a daily driver anyway.

Did you managed to get one?

Nah. Had other stuff I needed to buy this month. Couldn't justify spending 288 on what was basically a spare keyboard cum keycap tray.
