nk dream cream, from novelkeys's cream series, is also known as kailh dream cream. (review by theremingoat) it's a full-pom-based mx style linear switch.

for this build i use poron plate foam, but do not use switch films and ixpe switch pads/sheets. (usually i use all three, to make a build sound relatively quieter)
*
Omg so tempting. I've always loved the sound of creams, but never bought them because I "knew" that I was a tactile guy. Now that I'm daily driving Boba LT, this means that creams are a viable option. moneyflies.gif moneyflies.gif moneyflies.gif

here is the proof that kailh dream cream has gone through 600K actuations at factory.

i love building boards for myself. i choose and get parts, tune them, combine everything, then i do quality control, from start to end for myself.

it's good to be your own customer. everything fits, i have 0 complaint, and i feel good lol

Wah. Got running-in marks some more.

yes, it's a layer of leftovers that can be wiped off easily.

later i will put this into a zt60 e-white, and cover it with dmk bow hehe

Ooff...I like the novelties.

Trying to hold off on buying any more keycaps. I have enough to cover all my boards 3 times. Lol.

Waiting on 1 more GB to be fulfilled then I'm done.

I got tired of wiping my fingerprints off my acrylic surfaces. Did a partially successful experiment, bringing in my other hobby of leathercraft.

Cut out a layer of Buttero leather in green to go on top of the existing top layer.

Akko Blue on White ASA....and KAT Explosion spacebars. hahaha rojak but at least they are the same height. Both profiles copied the height of OEM profile.

Part 2
Made some mistakes. Have a good idea of what I should and shouldn't do. What thickness of leather I need. Time to shop!

Will be using this mismatched pair for now.

Part 3
Added some decorative hand stitching to my test piece. Yay or nay?

The single layer of 1mm leather is too thin to accommodate the stitches without warping the precise shape of the keyboard though. If I do stitch, I'll need to go thicker.

Stiching looks good man

Thanks. Getting the stitching done without altering the dimensions is harder than expected.

Part 5. (Part 4 was a disaster and shall remain undocumented lol)
Better luck with cutting out the inside after stitching. But it still expanded to the sides and became slightly too big. Next will cut everything oversize and trim after stitching and punching holes.

but i personally yet seen any 'good' numpad that match with mechanical keyboard..
mostly is random usb numpad for officer+laptop user

For readily available kits, there's the KBDPAD MarK II from KBDfans.
https://kbdfans.com/collections/kbdpad-mkii

From time to time there are also group buys but you really have to keep an eye out for them.

Personally I was previously using Keebio Sinc with 2L1P NUM:

All done! So nice to have a (mostly) matching set. Just wish that the NUM had per key LED for a complete match.

Now I just use Keebio Fold. My numpad is on a layer:

Well...after 4 days at work, I am making less and less mistakes on this board. The light springs are still a problem, but bearable. Some habits need to change. I'm getting decent typing speed already.
[attachmentid=11190806]

And after 4 days of refinement, this is the keymap I've managed to come up with to survive this change. Hardcore fullsize fan going from 110 keys and 1 encoder to just 68 keys and 1 encoder.

And most important, same layout with my M1 WITH DELETE KEY TOP OF BACKSPACE.

Just to share. I went from die die have to have a 100% full size keyboard, to split 75% plus numpad, and now to split ortho 65%Edit:correction it's a 60% (Keebio FoldKB).

How I cope with lack of dedicated Del key. I use QMK's combo keys, sometimes called chords. Backspace+Equal = DEL. These 2 keys are just next to each other. I go further with Shift-Delete to permanently delete files in Windows Explorer. Backspace+Minus = Shift-DEL.

The relevant code below:

const uint16_t PROGMEM test_combo6[] = {KC_MINS, KC_BSPC, COMBO_END};
const uint16_t PROGMEM test_combo7[] = {KC_EQL, KC_BSPC, COMBO_END};
combo_t key_combos[COMBO_COUNT] = {
COMBO(test_combo6, LSFT(KC_DEL)),
COMBO(test_combo7, KC_DEL),
}

this comparison chart was extracted from one of the videos by keybored.

[attachmentid=11444010]

right, it's better to try out different materials. the typing feel and sound definitely change based on plate materials.

edit: here are more recent revisions of charts.

i hope in near future vendors can provide a complete set of plate choices with common plate materials. imo these are one of the good spin-offs for them and their users.
*
Nice vid. Thanks for sharing. Too bad there wasn't an acrylic plate in the mix. I would have loved to hear how POM compares to acrylic since that's what I'm using now.

i suspect acrylic is not used commonly as plate material because it's brittle. right, for science, they should have included it as well.

edit: the charts are useful to help those who like sound to choose the right plate materials for desired sound profles.
*
Yes. I read that as well. That's why many people make their acrylic plates 3mm or thicker. I myself opted for double plates. So I made a 1.5mm normal plate. Then a 3mm plate underneath for support. Which had the added advantage of not needing much foam. The sides of my switches are almost entirely enclosed in acrylic. I just have PE foam between switch and PCB.

i think it's a solid build. i have one with 5-mm thick pc plate with modded cherry mx hg black. i need a refresh later, as i forgot how it feels like hehe
*
Wow! Never encountered 5mm PC before. Where did you get it? Or was it custom made?

Since PC is able to flex without breaking, unlike acrylic, you can supposedly use normal 1.5mm thickness. I tried it myself but for some reason the laser cutter I was using would not cut the material properly. And the amount of toxic smoke was scaring me as well. sweat.gif

Was just watching a youtube video about "what's next"

At this point, I'm already using 2 custom-ish keyboards with a third one coming.
First being a budget plastic 96% trimode keyboard
Second being an aluminium 75% M1 keyboard
Third being an amazing value group buy QK80 TKL.

After the QK80.
I should just skip all budget boards and get a good premium board.

F

You made me revisit the premium GBs I was looking at before. Extras of Cannonkeys Balance now available!!!

Can't afford a >USD500 keyboard though.....sad.

Trying to convince myself that my current keyboard is nice. I designed and made the case and plates myself. It's one of a kind.

I don't need a premium keyboard. I don't. No no no no.

But that navy aluminum is so lovely....

haha your board is nice. tbh only few (that i know) invest time and efforts to do this.

to me, premium kits are mainly for collection purposes, as personal tokens of our passion for the hobby. i do collect them.

however, practically, there are also 'issues' in my use case, e.g., layouts, form factors, parts for me to build barebones (i prefer soldered builds).

this is also why i stick to generic parts most of the times.
*
Thanks. I just wish I had the money to spare to collect this.

USD515 for the Navy aluminum A Stock extra. I've been in love with this aesthetic since the Satisfaction 75. Then they went and added a numpad and wow! But the downside is the knob is now the Cannonkeys logo which I don't really like, and during the GB, they changed the gold accents of the navy to silver. So to achieve the look in this photo...and add on a PC plate for the thock.

however, since both support multiple layouts, these pcbs and plates were not ideal to me. i prefer a single-layout pcb, and plates that don't have a lot of openings. then cx60 came out, and plate options with 64-key-specific cutouts followed. all problems were resolved.

My best feeling/sounding boards are all single layout. Whether it be my custom made acrylic plates or my prebuilt full size using steel plate.

What causes rattling noise on the upstroke?

I notice it happening on certain keys. Most reliably reproduced, on my right Ctrl, which I slam quite hard dozens of times a day.

I daily drive KAT profile, and I notice the effect is reduced if I switch to Cherry profile for that Ctrl key. So my theory is that the springs are not heavy enough for me. That when I slam it down, and it releases, at the top of the upstroke, it "bounces" back down. The Cherry keycap is lighter so that's why the effect is reduced. I'm using a soldered build so swapping the springs is not a trivial matter.

Anyone have any opinions on this matter?

FYI I'm on THIC THOCK SPRING V2 - DL SERIES 65G, in a Boba LT switch. Whereas before this I was a tactile user, mostly utilizing up 67g springs but sometimes up to 80g springs in most keys, and even 100g on my 6.25U spacebar.
