I used Lenovo T480 when it came out four years ago. Still performing well, I passed it down to my son now for his gaming (Roblox mainly) and online classes. The only fault was its keyboard; warranty claims and repair were straightforward.

I have used Dell and HP before that, but low spec/entry-level. So, I didn't have much care for it. Had used Fujitsu in the mid to late 2000s, a midrange laptop. That was built and reliable like a tank. No downtime, no warranty claim. I lugged it all around as I was making sales back then.

Now I am using MacBook Air 2021. So far, so good.

Asus laptop: 5 years (2016-2021)
HP laptop: few months now

However, I wouldn't necessarily generalise a certain brand as being unreliable -- it varies from model to model.

Lenovo Flex 2 14, 7 years laptop and still going, bought RM2.4k at that time.

I have changed to new laptop due to needed more computing power.

Touchpad right click not working well after 4th or 5th year, not big deal as I am using wireless mouse.

Display have one line after 5th or 6th year, not big deal as I am using external monitor, surprisingly 7 years laptop still able to output 4k resolution.

keyboard have one key not functioning after 6th year, ordered the keyboard online and changed it myself.

Changed from HDD to SSD on 6th year and laptop fly again.

Battery can't last very long, didn't want to change battery as I already changed new laptop.

Dell Inspiron 2011 - 2015. by then it was slow but still working. I just abandoned it. probably could have revived with SSD and/or Linux.

Illegear 2014 - 2016. CPU replaced first year. CPU died again right after warranty. never again.

Dell Inspiron 2016 - present. wife using, still going strong.

Thinkpad E series 2019 - present. mother using, still going strong.

I have a Toshiba Satellite (P4 days) mobo, HDD died within warranty. I can still memorise the SN since always go to SC.

Then bought a Dell Vostro 1320. Still works until today. LCD ribbon cable failed after 12 years. Batt died. Upgraded to SSD.

Then bought a Thinkpad X280. No issue.

I also have (ab)used many Thinkpads from work, X240, X250, E14

What I wanna say is that brand alone is not representative of all the product series' quality.. great brand but Elcheapo series/poor design also will cause a lot of issue. So picking the right series is important.

Lenovo Thinkpads X series and T series laptops are great bulletproof or near bulletproof.

But the Thinkpad "Elcheapo series" E14..random crash, random overheat due to stupid vent design muffled by screen bottom (not blowing out to the side).

Also worked for a kiamsiap company gave a i3 Lenovo Ideapad.. mega_shok.gif slow like tortoise.

MacBook Pro 13 inch late 2013 since 2013. Still working fine although might be a little sluggish when running xcode but still can use. Never had any problem even until now.

Bought a used Lenovo, by age should be 4 years. buy when it was used for 10 month.

Had some issue with the adapter and the charging port, might be due to powersurge. and just changed the bottom case due to cracks

otherwise the laptop is still doing quite well

A majority of students on tight budget would definitely be on Acer. Those things last an average of 5 years. Batteries and hard disk account for the common problem of failures. Mind you most of these are like sub RM2000 laptops.
