First time heard this, mind share the source?

Previously all my mbp except my 2017 one are silver colors, never have issue with it.

just some interesting discussion on the new macbook silver vs Space grey found on macrumors and YouTube comments.. thoughts?

from my observation though, in general most people prefer the classic silver on macbooks (regardless of model)

I think going to stay with silver after 3 years using space grey mbp. I like how the new design with silver color is like a throwback to old mbp prior to portless design, and since im going for case-less route this time, silver might be bettee choise for me.

I’m the same been using case previously on space grey mbp, thought of going caseless this time, hence might be switching to silver too, especially after looking at some pics of how easy the space grey get scratches (if no plans on using case)

14inch 1TB version is already come with 96w charger. So no need to opt for it.
Only the 14inch 512GB need to think about it. I watched the oversea reviewers they prefer upgrading the charger.
*
Are you sure? Mine also 14” 1TB but only comes with 67w charger

I get it now. You mean the higher spec with 10 CPU 16 GPU. Mine is the 8 CPU 14 GPU with upgraded 1TB SSD doesn’t come with 96w.

I was in the same dilemma 1+ year ago when I was picking my first macbook air 13" (intel), ended up with space gray and really happy with it so far.

For my 2nd (current) M1 MBP, also went with space gray because I am used to the colour already, and honestly it is subtly elegant (not sure if that is the right word), definitely lower profile and doesn't suit you if you want to attract attention at a cafe or office etc.

For my upcoming 16" MBP it was a pretty simple choice for me as well (Space Gray), mainly because:
1. The new MBP is very thick (thicc), so thiccccc that it resembles the older macbook back in ~2012 era, and since Space Gray is a relatively new colour, at first glance silver MBP would look like an old MBP (in my opinion) tongue.gif

2. As per the comment, space gray does not stand out as much as the silver, hence it does not distract you from your work (I still use my M1 macbook as second screen because it only supports 1 external display)

3. As for protection (as someone mentioned), not an issue for space gray, just slap on a transparent plastic casing, been using since my 1st MBA and honestly for a RM 25 case, it does it job well while still showcasing the look of a Macbook (classé?), oh well, not like one would care showing off a working tool....or would they?
Shopee Link to the 16" casing for the latest MBP 2021 (see model A2485): MBP 16" casing (Shopee link)

At the end of the day, it still boils down to personal preference haha! Silver is still a very beautiful colour nonetheless (screams macbook alot!)

It is a good deal, but I purposely didn’t opt for 96w upgrade because I’m not so into fast charging whether for MacBook or iPhone. I’m an old-school believer that normal charging is healthier for battery longevity as it produces less heat 😊

Thanks for sharing, my space grey mbp palm rest already faded due to sweat or constant rubbing, initially I use it with care but after a while I just find it tough and use it naturally, and refuse to use any sort of skin on the hand rest area..

I was reading a lot of comments between these 2 colours and shockingly a lot of people commented that the new 2021 redesign makes the space grey look thicker especially on the 16” (and we can only see that in person apparently), kinda funny coz in previous models space grey always make them look slimmer..

For me I’m not a person who wants the attention on a MacBook, so choosing space grey for the subtle colour is the choice, but might switch to silver coz again I’ve read a lot of people commented there’s ‘something’ that feels very special in the new MacBooks silver this year, even a few YouTubers commented that during unbox, they say they can’t put it in words, have to see ourselves to feel it..makes me tempted to switch biggrin.gif

Plan to go with Space grey 16 inch M1 Pro 16GB RAM 512GB SDD. Watched MaxTech review, looks like M1 Max and more RAM not showing noticeable difference. hmm.gif

His test not really in depth. A bit too general. My advise, seek reviewer from your main areas. For example, photography will definitely benefit 32GB RAM.

Haha nice one! It's really tempting thou not gonna lie, I might just give it a try for my next one, or for my next travel macbook!

Re the palm rest fading, I mostly use a separate keyboard so my MBP just sit on the stand powering my monitor haha! But it's great to learn about your experience, I'll keep an eye on mine since I bring my current MBP to office on a daily basis (and type on it) tongue.gif

Yea that’s the thing, this time around I’m planning to use it free and easy, as in no casing no external keyboard and monitor, wanted to utilize every single part of the laptop (might consider using a silicone keyboard but only when it’s in use, as I saw my colleague pouring his coffee into his mbp keyboard and formed out a few thousands to repair the mobo…sweat.gif hence the silver is more practical for me …

anyway I’ve switched to the silver and to my surprised it it changed to ‘preparing to ship’ right away, so there’s no chance to reverse the decision biggrin.gif was a little worried that it will push the delivery forward but it is apparently the same, still deliver by 23-25 Nov biggrin.gif it was a happy decision nonetheless..

Yes, I had these exact issues with my naked Space Grey MacBook 16 before. And even under normal use! For the record, I usually baby my tech gadgets, so seeing scratches appear over time was definitely surprising, given how carefully I would handle the machines.

The way I see it ...

The silver MacBooks are more understated/subtle now in a sea of Space Grey MacBooks. (Many, including myself, who wanted to distinguish from the usual Silver Apple products have opted for Space Grey over the years.) Also, given how powerful these MacBooks are, having it in the 'usual silver' feels like an acknowledgement of how far Apple has come with their MacBooks, a bit like paying homage to the MacBooks of old. Then, there's the idea of practicality, and how silver MacBooks tend to have that timeless appeal.

However, the Space Grey MacBooks definitely exude sleekness and have that cool factor going for them. I also like how the grey can look different depending on the environment/lighting. They kind of tell you that it's a new generation MacBook; however, given that many MacBooks since 2015 have been in Space Grey, I feel like this may now be a moot point. And, of course, there's the issue of more obvious wear over time (only if you prefer not to use your MacBook with a case).

Lastly, I'm not sure about whether having a darker MacBook over a lighter one will yield any practical advantages. I mean ... unless you work in a room with absolutely no lighting/reflections/light-coloured objects, I feel it makes little difference to the overall experience.

Anyway, just my dua sen! icon_rolleyes.gif
