What about software developers? Is there good demand for this? Specifically, java developers. I am also thinking about breaking into fintech/banking. graduating soon.

im ex-Maybank IT infra middleware guy. normal is 3months bonus. exceed that means youre already top performer / some very important guy
culture is very fast pace, deployment every week. i would say not likely have work-life-balance, turn-over rate also quite high. Indian everywhere. standby 24/7 culture

then i joined RHB. workwise good. culture slow a bit, so many old people, dont have much SOP. bonus 3 months average, hybrid style. kinda chill, quite okey work-life-balance.
benefit so-so. good for retirement plan
now just joined Standard Chatered project base. remote work but can come office bukit jalil, super strict working SOP, chill. i would say tooo chill, pace quite slow. so far so good

Standard Chartered > RHB > Maybank

Do these banks still practice 100% working in home?

Heard many banks need to 100% working in office nowadays blush.gif

SCB i would say 70% very flexible.
My team just coming to office once a month.

RHB around 50%
Depends on team, mine 3days WIO 2 WFH
I got friend from L2 Support handling critical system. WFH forever

Maybank super strict now.
Heard that they slowly revoked the WFH, fully onsite.
maybe to maintained their no 1 ranking for the biggest public listed company in Malaysia. lol

Honestly as long as you're technically capable as a SWE, you can break into just about any industry. Java developers are specifically high-demand in Malaysia.

Ex-Maybank IT here, WFH arrangement totally depends on your department & team.
But from what I know, most are already back to office 5 days a week.
Some still allow 4 days in office + 1 day WFH.

I completely agree with this about Maybank IT departments.
Bonus is usually around 3 months.
Work-life balance was close to non-existent if you are supporting any critical components (core banking/payment gateways/etc).
Had to standby for deployment, disaster recovery, sometimes even to support user testing over the weekend.
Boss/lead used to mandate people to be stand-by onsite even when it is completely unnecessary.

Every year my team's resignation rate is around 30%+ after receiving their bonus. (I was there for more than 5 years.)
And yes, many foreign Indian staff in some of the departments.

On the flipside, you can apply for training few times a year and enjoy few days of vacation with food and accommodation provided. (subject to approval)
And they have gyms, game room with PS5, pool table, nintendo switch, VR headsets, massage chair, nap pods, and even a theater room for karaoke or watching movie. And it is fairly simple to book.
I also heard they will be moving to a new building by 2026.

head hunters, connections and if your current work has collaborations, serve or support bank IT team - that's how my colleague got into their project team, the Maybank manager scout him out
