Concluions

1. There is a slight advantage by using a PCIe network card

2. XP is faster than Vista for Reading, but falls well behind Vista for Writing. There must be someting in XP that limits the Write speed as all figures seem to be topping out at about 10.53MB/s

3. The 207+ is well ahead of the 106e in Reading and Writing as expected due to the faster CPU and more RAM

4. Using an FTP program to transfer files from the NAS is by far and away the fastest option, FTP best 54.25 and 33.90 MB/s, Windows XP best 26.46 and 20.47 MB/s

5. An FTP program is also the fastest for Wrting to the 207+ but not for the 106e, where a combination of a PCIe network card and Vista is fastest

One of my drive in the 323 has died just now.. There is a burnt smell on the broken drive but the other one is just fine. I dont know whether the fault is caused by the 323 or the drive itself sad.gif

There was a smell of burning plastic near to the connector of the drive (on the HDD side). The box suddenly turned itself off when I was doing my work. The NAS refused to start if the faulty drive is still in the unit. I managed to access my file on the other HDD after I removed the faulty drive. I dare not to insert the working HDD into the other slot because slot is causing the drive to fail. I'll just wait for the new drive to be RMA-ed. Fortunately I'm using the RAID-1 setup. If not I can kiss my schoolworks bye bye sweat.gif

if you are using QNAP ro Synology NAS, than please get the APC Back UPS series.

why? Because it will send the sleep/turn off signal to Synology NAS, [ at the Synology admin page, user also can Set time before system enters [Safe Mode] after a power failure ]

and than.....synology NAS will Restart automatically after a power failure....

BTW, with the latest firmware :

# Enhanced BT Download: The DHT support, 25% download performance enhancement, BT encryption support, and seeding options are added.

The Download Station enhancements include DHT support, 25% performance increase, BT encryption support, and flexible seeding rule settings. "The download performance enhancements imply a shorter time needed to download the same files," commented Rosiel Lee, product manager of the Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0, "this pushes the Green idea we have always kept in mind another step forward."

The DHT support allows trackerless torrents download. "It means you do not need to connect to a tracker in order to download, but connect to a distributed DHT Network to find other peers," explained Allen Kao, RD manager of Synology. "The upgraded Download Station also supports both TCP and UDP trackers, and Peer Exchange Protocol, all are for increasing the ability to find more peers when downloading." In addition, flexible seeding options are also available in this beta.

don't think it can combine with that device. Cause it will then be reading from dns323 through the USB connection. DNS323 is now not mounting devices on usb. IT's different.

But the L6 thompson device is interesting.

Synology® Announced the Official Release of Disk Station Manager 2.0 June Update, Introducing Extra Data Protection-Network Recycle Bin, and Download Enhancements

Taipei, Taiwan—June 17, 2008—Synology® closed its June beta program today and officially released the Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0 June update. This firmware update features extra data protection, extra IP camera support, download enhancements and performance improvement, AFP performance improvement, and third-party application integration capability.

The CIFS recycle bin provides extra data protection for unintentional human error. "Files deleted over CIFS connections would be kept in the recycle bin folder in the same file structure. This is to provide users with an easy-to-search environment when they need to recover deleted files," said Rosiel Lee, product manager of the Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0.

The Download Station enhancements include DHT support, 25% performance increase, BT encryption support, and flexible seeding rule settings. The download enhancements imply a shorter time needed to download the same files; this pushes the Green idea Synology has always kept in mind another step forward.

The DHT support allows trackerless torrents downloading. It means you do not need to connect to a tracker in order to download, but connect to a distributed DHT Network to find other peers. The upgraded Download Station also supports TCP trackers, UDP trackers, and Peer Exchange Protocol, all that are for increasing the ability to find more peers when downloading. In addition, flexible seeding options are also available in this release.

Moreover, with the June update, users are now able to install third-party applications onto the Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0 interface. "We have compiled the Synology NAS Server Third-Party Apps Integration Guide to teach users and system integrators to add the applications in details," commented Michael Tsao, product manager of the Synology NAS Server third-party integration, "we are confident that users will find it flexible and useful to integrate their own applications."

The June beta has attracted over 1,700 users to download and test-drive. Synology is proud to end the beta with positive user feedbacks during the trial period. The Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0 June update includes the following improvements:

1. Extra Data Protection: The Network Recycle Bin ensures all deleted files are recoverable from the recycle bin folder. This function works for all CIFS connections.
2. Enhanced BT Download: The DHT support, 25% download performance enhancement, BT encryption support, and seeding options are added.
3. Enhanced AFP Performance: The AFP download performance is improved by a maximum of 89%, and upload 72%. The test results from the Synology lab are listed below:

Model DS108j
Max. Download Improvement 89%
Max. Upload Improvement 10%

DS207+
Max. Download Improvement 21%
Max. Upload Improvement 15%

DS508
Max. Download Improvement 49%
Max. Upload Improvement 72%

4. Enhanced Photo Station 3: The performance of thumbnail browsing has been improved. The Google AdSense, calendar-based article browsing, and sticky articles are added to the blogging system.
5. Enhanced Audio Station: The renovated AJAX drag-and-drop mechanism is added to the playlist management.
6. Extra IP Cameras Support: 6 more IP cameras are now supported on Surveillance Station: Linksys WVC54GCA, LevelOne FCS-0010, TRENDnet TV-IP100, TV-IP100W, TV-IP400, and TV-IP400W.
7. Integrated Telnet/SSH: Telnet and SSH terminal services are now configurable directly from the management UI.
8. New Language Support: The Polish language is added to the Disk Station Manager 2.0, Synology Assistant, Synology Data Replicator 3, and Synology Download Redirector.
9. Upgraded Apache: Apache is upgraded to 2.2.8.
10. Upgraded PHP: PHP is upgraded to 5.2.6.
11. Third-Party Apps Integration Capability: Users who wish to install third-party applications on the Synology NAS Server can refer to the Synology NAS Server Third-Party Apps Integration Guide to proceed.

Availability

The Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0 June update comes pre-installed on all new Synology NAS products from now on. It’s also available for free download at www.synology.com for most models that have already been shipped to Synology users.

This will depends on the Model u use, for example : Synology DS-508
* Max User Accounts: 2,048
* Max Groups: 256
* Max Shared Folder: 200
* Max Concurrent Connections: 128 ( this is the no of user can connect to this Synology NAS)

Some info to share....... one of the synology using test RUN program to test the Synology NAS and others NAS, he found that ,after 3~4 days, others NAS will stop to respond but Synology NAS still running very well.

One of the corporate user they have 300 user to access the Synology NAS... so far their feedback is good.
