I'm planning to get a NAS (SATA HDD) for my BT download movie and FTP server, and a lot of my friends recommend me D-Link DNS-323 NAS. D-Link DNS-323 have good review in SmallNetBuilders.com, you may refer to below link for further information.

Lately i saw their promotion flyer on DNS-323, D-Link is selling @RM499 per unit (without HDD), and can support BT client too ... Price so tempting ...

Any comment ?

you can use an old pc and convert it to NAS server. There are one opensource program for this based on free-bsd (monowall).

I agree with lucifah and azmihamzah. It would be learning experience for you.

Please do keep us up to date if you do decide to use an old PC as a NAS. You can even use it as a router!

RM499? I got it for GBP 150 from Amazon UK last month sad.gif
Yeah basically it runs on Linux. You can even put a torrent client or set up a uPnP streaming server.

More info here -> http://wiki.dns323.info/

Another similar device is QNAP TS-209. It has more built-in applications than the 323.

It's just a matter of preference. I bought the 323 because I'm only have a laptop and like to move around so a standalone device is more convenient for me. Whatever it is, using an old PC is cheaper and more scalable smile.gif

you might want to check out the NSLU2 from linksys. its cheaper and the possibilities are just endless

http://www.nslu2-linux.org

i have 2 of them:
1st: 2 X 250gb HDD running unslung firmware
---
itunes server (firefly) - serves mp3 to any pc connected to my network via itunes
upnp server (ushare) - serves movies/mp3/pics to my media center pc in the living room, SLA5520i philips wifi hifi in my room, digitial photo album that i made from an old laptop hanging in my living room and my friend's ps3 (his unit is in front of mine)
torrent downloader (enhanced-ctorrent)
ftp server (vsftpd)
ssh (openssh)

2nd: 1 X 500gb HDD running debian (2nd usb port with usb-ethernet adapter)
---
transparent proxy to cache all my traffic (squid)
backup my data from 1st NSLU2 and from all computers on my network (rsync & rsnapshot)
webserver for my online photoalbum and online calendar (mysql & php via fastcgi)
ntp server (openntp)
rss downloader (tiny rss)

i will totally agree with others that using an old pc will be cheaper and more flexible. freenas is one of the popular choices for this, ebox platform is also good (http://ebox-platform.com/features). but if you want something that you can leave running forever without having to worry about electric bills soaring then a true NAS appliance is still the way to go. hope this helps, cheers!

QNAP Announces Multimedia Application Support with Sony PSP & Nokia N95 on its All-in-One NAS Series

user posted image
Taipei, Taiwan, November 2007 - Now, QNAP NAS users can enjoy even more Sony PSP, playing the music within the NAS or use the Nokia N95 as a remote control to play the multimedia contents on the server via UPnP media player wirelessly.

The leading network-attached storage provider QNAP Systems, Inc. announced two multimedia applications with gaming consoles and mobile phones. Users can use their Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) as a portable music player by connecting to the QNAP NAS in the wireless home network and playing the music files on the server. In addition, users can use the DLNA Control Point function of Nokia N95 handset to remotely control the DLNA media playing function of QNAP NAS wirelessly. The video, images, and music can be controlled by the handset and played on TV or Hi-Fi system via DLNA compliant media players. QNAP TS-109 and TS-209 series are multi-functional home storage servers which adopt high performance and power-saving Linux-embedded design. These NAS series support built-in TwonkyMedia server with DLNA compliant and web-based RSS music sharing. Other powerful functions are provided including PC-less BitTorrent download, iTunes music server, web server, and built-in web album, etc. Besides reliable storage and backup, QNAP NASes enable users to establish an easy-to-share multimedia sharing center in their home network.

According to Mr. Andy Chou, Product Manager of the QNAP, "Our NASes adopt the newest high-speed embedded 500MHz CPU and 128MB DDRII memory. This outstanding hardware and software integration has surpassed other entry-level NAS models in the market. Users can benefit both from high-speed data transfer and many fascinating features. For example, the built-in iTunes Server for music sharing, PHP web server with MySQL and SQLite, FTP server for convenient data sharing, and RAID server for data redundancy. We believe our multi-functional NAS series will deliver exceptional value to our users."

This box also can do BT download.

I got this Dlink DNS 323 for RM470 last 2 month.. Paired it with Seagate 500GB SATA.

But facing a few problem from the start.. The DNS 323 hang after transfering files into/from the DNS 323..

Let say.. I after I transfer 2GB-3GB of files, the DNS will hang(lost network connection) and I need to swith off & off the DNS 323 to make it running again..

I suspect, the DNS 323 was faulty from the start.. Will send for RMA soon.

I just bought 1 from Section 14 Digital Mall.

RM429. Quite worth the money at least it can protect your value data.

By the way, you mentioned can support BT client, how to do that?

Went to Digital Mall today and got the unit for RM429, the guy told me the price was RM469 but I saw their flyer showing it on sale at RM429, so the manager let me have it at that price too. TA philips for the headup.
