Pull out socket is a good idea, double protection from lightning storm when you not home or asleep. I do that at night before going to sleep or before I go out of the house.

You need to find the cause of the artifacts problem, apparently for me and zainframe the source of the problem was the imitation/third party power brick, and there was nothing to fix- the problem went away when I switched to ori power brick with stepdown (after some furious modding of converter head- somehow my instinct told me it was the third party/imitation brick's fault).
