Severe downgrade....BMP-3 is much better than AAV7
Afaik the BMP-3F and BT-3F contract for the Indonesian Marines is not yet cancelled but is on hold. Maybe Indonesia is trying to get a waiver from the US government.
Ofcourse with a 100mm gun the BMP-3F has more firepower than the AAV7.

BMP-3 isn't only for bringing marines onshore, but also provide fire support. Machine guns, 30mm autocannon, ATGM and 100mm gun are perfect combinations.
I remember a USMC AAV7 became a RPG-7 target practice during early days of 2003 invasion....many died. It's just an easy, hapless target....can't barely shoot back.
Imho any amphibious armored vehicle are lightly armored. If its too heavy it won't float. Don't know if the BMP-3F armor could withstand a RPG attacks. Maybe there some news of the BMP-3F in the Yemeni-Houthi conflict as iinm the UAE is one the operator of the BMP-3F. The only advantage the BMP-3F has is its 100mm gun and can fire a GLATGM.
Of course, it's common knowledge that amphibious IFV is lightly armored. But, AAV-7 is a 3.5 meter tall lumbering box, while BMP-3 is much shorter and can shoot back furiously.
So what other choice do we have? Its either the AAV7 or the ZAHA. Don't know if they want the wheeled Pandur 8x8 like the TNI-AD though. Afaik both BMP-3F and BT-3F contracts are on hold not cancelled. Unless Indonesia got a waiver from the US.
The United States Senate Committee on Armed Services plans to exempt some US strategic allies; India, Indonesia and Vietnam from Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) that allows the nations to buy Russian military equipment without any threat sanctions.
“The final piece of legislation will exempt just three countries—India, Indonesia, and Vietnam—from a robust sanctions regime enacted and imposed last year,” Sen. Jim Inhofe Republican Senator from Oklahoma, who helped craft the annual defense bill as part of the House Armed Services Committee was quoted as saying by the Daily Beast Monday.
“They are currently buying [Russian] equipment that has to be maintained until they make the transition, and those three fall into that category,” Inhofe said in a brief interview.
“That was us,” Inhofe added, referring to the fact that Congress, not the Trump administration, decided which countries can obtain waivers.

A visit to Lockheed Martin’s plant in Marietta, Georgia, by Indonesia’s Air Force Chief of Staff, Air Chief Marshal Fadjar Prasetyo, on September 7 resulted in confirmation that the country's air force has ordered the C-130J Super Hercules, the latest version of the perennial transport. The number of aircraft now on order has not been formally revealed but is believed to be five.
As the aircraft were ordered as a direct commercial sale, the purchase had previously gone unpublicized. The Indonesian air force (TNI-AU) is understood to have selected the stretched C-130J-30 in 2018, and it is thought to have placed an order in the following year. During the air chief’s visit to Marietta, he was photographed alongside a flight deck section of the first C-130J-30 for the TNI-AU, indicating that the initial aircraft could be handed over sometime next year, although no delivery schedule has been announced.
Based from official TNI-AD recent video the Indonesian Army Chief of Staff said that beside the Bushmaster MRAP the Indonesian Army is also planning to buy the Thales Hawkei Light Protected Vehicle from Australia. Australia to donate 15 units Bushmaster MRAP to Indonesia for peacekeeping mission.

UK wins Indonesian export contract for new frigates
By George Allison - September 16, 2021
DSEI 2021- Babcock has secured the first export contract for its Arrowhead 140 frigate through a design licence agreement with PT PAL Indonesia, a state-owned enterprise that builds and maintains ships for military and commercial use from its facilities in Surabaya, Indonesia.
The UK is using a similar design, basing its Type 31 Frigates on the Arrowhead 140 design, being built by Babcock at Rosyth.
Babcock say in a news release that the breakthrough deal comes two years since Babcock’s AH140 design was first announced as the preferred bidder for the UK Type 31 frigate programme at DSEI 2019, with the contract confirmed in November of the same year.
“The design licence will enable PAL to build two Arrowhead 140 frigates in Indonesia with bespoke design modifications for the Indonesian Navy. The agreement was signed at the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2021 event in London, on board HMS Argyll, by David Lockwood CEO Babcock and Kaharuddin Djenod, CEO PAL. And was witnessed by the Defence Minister of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto and UK Defence Secretary, Rt Hon Ben Wallace MP.
The firm say that the baseline Arrowhead 140 design can be configured to meet a broad range of naval requirements and, with Babcock’s support PAL will now engineer the required modifications to configure the Arrowhead 140 for the Indonesian customer.
David Lockwood, CEO Babcock said:
“Today is a really exciting moment for Babcock and our frigate export programme, as we sign the design licence with PAL for two new frigates for the Indonesian Navy. The beauty of our export product is that it is a readily transferable design that can be tailored to the customer’s needs as part of our strong Arrowhead frigate portfolio. What’s more, the design licence and subsequent build programme will be a significant catalyst for prosperity in Indonesia.
Working with our Indonesian colleagues this contract will see Arrowhead 140 frigates built in Indonesia, by the local workforce, contributing directly to the social and economic value of its sovereign shipbuilding community and country as a whole. We look forward to further opportunities to support PAL as the programme matures. It’s a proud day for the Babcock and PAL teams.”
Still waiting to see the plan on how PT PAL would build 6 FREMM and 2 Arrowhead 140 all at the same time. This also should be a big wake-up call for Malaysia not to procrastinate and just get the Gowinds completed whatever it costs. And a wake-up call for the leadership of TLDM to stop planning for corvettes, OPVs or RLMS.
Not all FREMM will be build by Indonesia. Italy will build 4 FREMM while Indonesia to build 2 FREMM.
