IDEF 2021: FNSS hails Kaplan MT progress

18th August 2021 - 13:30 GMT | by The Shephard News Team

FNSS displays production version of Kaplan Medium Tank for Indonesia, where it is known as Harimau.

FNSS exhibited a serial production version of its Kaplan Medium Tank (MT) at the IDEF defence exhibition in Istanbul on 17-20 August, claiming that the ‘design perfection process… is completed’ for the Indonesian Army as the launch customer.

The Kaplan MT as showcased at IDEF features a number of differences from the original prototype, including a redesigned front end and a relocated driver position.

Under the terms of a contract with FNSS, Indonesian manufacturer PT Pindad is producing most of the tanks (known as Harimau in Indonesian service) under licence.

Indonesia expects to receive a first batch of 18 Kaplan MTs by the end of 2021. A total of 52 more will be procured in 2022, followed by 19 in 2023 and 17 in 2024.

Boxer awaits firing trials with John Cockerill Defense C3105 turret

by Christopher F Foss

A Belgian John Cockerill Defense C3105 two-person 105 mm turret has been integrated onto a rear mission module of the Boxer 8x8 Multi-Role Armoured Vehicle (MRAV) at Krauss-Maffei Wegmann’s (KMW’s) facilities in Munich, the company has confirmed.

This combination has also completed some company mobility trials in Germany, and manned firing trials are planned to take place in Germany or the UK when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, according to the two contractors. It was originally expected that this combination would be shown for the first time at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris in June 2020, but that event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The turret is armed with a 105 mm high-pressure rifled gun fed by an automatic loader, with this version fitted with stabilised day/night sights for commander and gunner, enabling hunter/killer target engagements while stationary or moving.

Congratulations to indonesia on the OPVs.

I dont really understand the meaning of the launch. There will be 2 different types of OPV being officiated at the same steel cutting ceremony?

Why 2 different types being build simultaneously at the same shipyard?

Also if I am Indonesia, I would put all OPVs under the Indonesian Coast Guard, not the navy.

QUOTE(Lampuajaib @ Aug 27 2021, 09:55 PM)
Maybe there are 2 different size of OPV or different spesification.

QUOTE(Frozen_Sun @ Aug 28 2021, 12:13 AM)
^^^ Based from Janes article both ships have similar specification. The different designation is for the source of funds.

Excerpts.

QUOTE
The Indonesian Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced on the same day that the steel was for two vessels, which are designated “OPV” and “OPV 90 meter”.

However, Janes has since verified with a representative from PT DRU that despite the separate designations, the two vessels have similar specifications and will form a single class once they are in service.

The vessel that has been referred as ‘OPV' is being funded with state defence budget allocated for the TNI-AL, while ‘OPV 90 meter' is being paid for with proceeds from a domestic loan.

I see that so far the Gempitas with the Denel LCT 30 Turret and LCT 30 Ingwe Turret aren't fitted with any Commander Sight.

Get PMN of Rp 1.28 Trillion, PT PAL is Ready for Whole Local Submarine Production

user posted image

(Surabaya, August 24, 2021) In accordance with Law No. 9 of 2020, PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) received State Capital Participation (PMN) in the State Budget for Fiscal Year 2021 amounting to Rp. 1.28 trillion to complete the submarine hangar facility.

Since the enactment of PP No. 84 of 2021 which was signed by President Joko Widodo, it has been stated that PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) PMN funds have been disbursed.

PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) will be fully responsible for managing PMN funds by realizing the ideals of submarine development from the scope of the Joint Section, tests and trials (Setting to Work, Hydro Test, Harbor Acceptance Test (HAT), Sea Acceptance Test including Pre -SAT up to the preparation of working standards to become Whole Local Production.

This is also in order to prepare themselves to answer the needs of national defense equipment, especially submarines by of course carrying out a strategy of mastering submarine technology and developing submarine technology in the future, including unmanned submarines.

The State Capital Investment (PMN) in the APBN for Fiscal Year 2021 of Rp. 1.28 trillion will be mandated to increase production capabilities, human resources, and other supporting facilities.

First, with the 2021 PMN which is currently disbursed, it will be used to increase production capabilities, through facilities that will be equipped including the construction of a Ship Lift, Glassfiber Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Shop, Painting Shop, Blasting Shop, etc. With the fully equipped facilities through this PMN, it will increase the ability of PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) in the construction of submarines, so that it is not only in the scope of the Joint Section but to Whole Local production.

Second, in increasing the production capacity that is currently owned, it will be supported by improving the quality of human resources such as the implementation of training, certification, and other training facilities.

CEO of PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) Dr. Kaharuddin Djenod M.Eng when welcoming the visit of the Deputy Minister of Defense (Wamenhan) Muhammad Herindra M.Sc to PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) on August 12, 2021, said "The submarine hangar facility owned by PT PAL Indonesia (Persero) has a submarine production capacity simultaneously as many as 4 Scorpene (or similar) type submarines and 2 30 meter midget type submarines”

Coming Soon Or Next Change?

Marhalim Abas
August 30, 2021
Malaysian Defence

SHAH ALAM: Coming soon or next change? It appears that the local defence industry and wannabes is gearing up for an Army tender for the 155mm SPH. The tender was supposed to be open for bidding last June and earlier this month but were never published.

I was told that the RFB will be published soon though no one could be certain of the exact date. Coming soon or next change…as they say. Anyhow even though there is no general specifications being bandied about, it is likely involved up to 36 truck-mounted 155mm SPH, which have been the numbers talked about for the last 10 years or so. We would have gotten 29 M109 tracked SPH already but it was cancelled by the government in 2019.

The Nexter Caesar 155mm SPH will likely start as the favourite as its been the most tested in country compared to the other contenders – like the Bae Systems Archer SPH and YugoImport Nora B-52 M-21 SPH. Of course they are other truck-mounted SPH like the Turkish MKE Yavuz 155mm SPH.

If there is no big plan on building locally in big number there is no need to build facility for building up to 4 subs and 2 midget sub simultaneously

Afaik this is related to the plan procurement of new type of submarines other than the DSME Type 209. Current tools and equipment in PT PAL are only suitable to the DSME Type 209 so they need to upgarde their facility according to the requrement made by Naval Group as the submarines will be built entirely in Indonesia like what they did in Brazil with the Scorpene Riachuelo Class Submarine. Same goes to other OEMS offering their submarine to Indonesia.

Lets just wait and see. All i know both OPVs will have the same 90 meter length. The right pic looks like a KCR 60 meter.

The OPVs will be FFBNW but the Indonesian Ministry of Defense expected to acquire weapon systems soon as the Ministry of Finance have given her approval for the budget.
