QUOTE(Pennywise @ Sep 16 2007, 11:02 PM)
Spray? I want something natural with no side effects. I dont think I will have a problem separating those two apart for 2 or 3 weeks as Hun advised below.

After 2 years, I might not even sell if I start to feel they are a family to me. Coming home to 7 - 10 Westies - heavennn~!
Now, I am planning to take this seriously. I thought female pup only start to be on heat AFTER 12 months of age? My breeder explained it to me like this:

When a female pup first be on heat, she can deliver baby but it's not safe. Just like any 12 year old human girl can deliver baby but not good for her body and may cause delivery problems.

So, it is best to wait at least 18 months of age before letting her be pregnant. 18 months of dog age is like a fresh girl 18 years old. That time only deflower her.

He told me this in cantonese which I dont really understand but that's roughly it. I may get the months and age part wrong. Please correct me I made any mistake.

Anyway, I need to clarify some things:
1. How old a female pup will be on heat
2. If on heat, how long? (no. of days)
3. If so happens if Casper 'rape' her off before she on heat for the first time, what will happen? (in case Casper wanna show dominance or what, his ding-dong is always hard and out whenever got girls come to my house... Sometimes, I call him super hamsap dog)
4. Is it advisable to let them stay together when no one is at home, lets say from 9 - 5pm?
5. Is there anything else I need to know for a male and female pup to live together?
6. One of my main purpose to get a female westie is to let Casper have companion (current times) and a family (in the future). But, I worry he simply bang her when they are home alone, worry she die.
7. If I lock her up, means she got no access to do her biz during on-heat. If I lock him up, means he dont have access to do his biz. This can be quite troublesome.
Yeaaa... unexpected until he get himself stucked!!
Oic... how you separate leh for 3 weeks? Any idea to share?
Where got wan laa... got wan meh?
*
Oh now... not 12 months.... females start to mature at 6 months old.... but they will come on heat at 7 months or 8 months. Chelsea got her 1st heat at 8 months old.... 12 months, that is only for Basenjis and also certain hound or hunting dogs only.

well, 18 months is considered a good age.... but not all dogs will come on heat at 18 months.... so just wait. 3rd heat would be better. Coz on their 2nd heat, they are still growing mentally and physically lah.

The heat last 2 weeks. Best you just let them be 3 weeks apart.

The mating will only be successful if he ties with the female. As in his genital is swollen and stuck to the female's private part. If he penetrate but no tying, then it won't be a successful mating. Also, during 1st day of heat, won't get pregnant so fast.... but it is better to be safe lah.

You can let them stay together when the female is not on heat. She won't get pregnant nor have successful matings if she is not on heat.

Lock her up means you put her away from Casper. Of course she needs to do her business lah. You must separate them 100% safely away from each other. As you have read what my dachshund could do last time, I bet Casper can do the same coz male dogs do go crazy when females on heat.

About the dogs being tied or locked together.... it will only be successful if locked. If no locking of the tie, then it is not successful breeding lah.

I think because beer got low alcohol percentage? not sure but of course we would not try... Hahaha...
Wahhhh, ur siu wan very discipline wor, wears the pants. Luckily she is not a beetch! If she sendiri bite the pants and invite your siu kat, habis liao - today u become kong kong liao.
Tie together can be as short as 2 min... so how to know for real oh? I think I get a better picture liao. After on-heat over, put them together again is fine - safe!
*
The tie, normally after the tie, the female and male will clean their own private parts. Lick lick.... I think I posted a link with the picture already.... did you see my other links?

Hahah... no.... The only dog that could do that is the breed called Lundehund.

Most likely that pup is not a corgi but a Lundehund. They do come in that colour.

Lundehund is the only dog that has collar bone like us. They can bend their front legs like we can with our arms. Also, they got 6 toes.... a dog normally only has 4 toes and a dew claw.... but this breed has 6 toes on front and back legs. My friend in the Netherlands has one.... and funny, this breed in the Netherlands is cheaper than JRTs hahaah.

Hehehe.... I love to read my dog breed book when I was younger, and I got fascinated when I saw this breed lundehund.... my friend has one now and it's so adorable... but too bad not in Malaysia. I find it strange for a dog to be able to close it's ears and also bend it's front legs like we do with our arms.... just so strange.

Breeding dogs is never easy. That is why must do lots of research, also have chats or make friends with good proper breeders and ask them to share their knowledge and experience with you. Already here got Yang ahhaha.... anyone else out there can help?

Well, we should not encourage everyone to breed but we should guide and also practice ethical breeding if we do want to breed our pets. Think first before do heheheh.

Help~ My friends neighbour's dog kena caught by DBKL for doing nothing -.- He's a very sweet dog, but the owner macam nak disown him, always let him out of the house. The dog will sit outside the gate waiting to enter the house. Where to get back the dog?
*
DBKL will house their caught dogs at the Setapak Dog Pound.... are you sure is by DBKL? After 2 weeks, if nobody reclaims the dog, it will be sent to SPCA.... you can ask your friend to call SPCA for the directions and contact to the DBKL dog pound.

No, they won't shoot the dog or kill it lah unless it is super aggressive or is too sick to get better.

Yah, they only open on weekdays, like government staff.... But I think you can go there on Saturdays, my friend went there before.... but better call to inquire first.

Some dogs if they are not food crazy, they won't take treats.... my Chelsea worst! She won't even want water and will wait till go home.

They just feel so anxious, so much energy, they attention is not focused properly so treats can't really tame their minds sometimes. Slowly lah, once Casper gets used to more outings, he may be interested in his treats later on.

QUOTE(White Palace @ Sep 23 2007, 05:28 PM)
Actually standard size of shih tzu is 9 to 16 pounds, it is not like maltese which is 4-6 pounds, just that petshops & many sellers like to tell the buyer, "very small one!" "wont grow big one!" "Nah, will grow like that only" then people thought shih tzu is small lor, but ends up buy back liao, grow out of expectation, but it is actually such size.
*
Yups. Alot of petshops would tell their customers that shih tzus are very tiny dogs... some would say "Toy" size or Mini shih tzu... but once grow big, the shih tzu reaches 8kg, then they would blame the dog eat too much blah blah or pet shop con them.

Some petshops tell owners to feed their shih tzu 1 tablespoon of food a day, resulting in underweight dogs that look like they may die very soon.... poor things. I have seen this with toy poodle.... sickening.

QUOTE(ALaN- @ Sep 23 2007, 05:42 PM)
HaHa ... its just an example ... never aspect d size of shih tzu is d same as maltese ... thats for sure ...some maltese hav a size of shih tzu ...
N others ...

n many like to test breed  ... juz out of curiosity to know how will it looks like ...

hmm .. at least dat for wat i thk ...
*
Agree with you on this one. Some thing "hey, why not I create a new breed? then can get demand" But alot never think of the consequences of what would happen if they breed. Also, many would cheat. Who knows, to get a super mini shih tzu, someone may have bred with maltese? That is why sometimes some shih tzus got longer faces, smaller eyes and the fur texture is not the same.

QUOTE(madmoz @ Sep 23 2007, 10:49 PM)
the reason why i single out 'teacup' dogs and not 'doubtful' pedigrees is that unlike the latter which probably will only disappoint the owner, tea cup dogs come with a whole bunch of health issues.
again, everything stems from ppl wanting smaller, cuter dogs sad.gif
*
Alot do not understand, there is no such thing as teacup.... it is just people breeding the runts of litters to runts, to get a tiny size of that breed. A pity coz many suffer from alot of ailments like bone growth, internal organs damaging faster, heart failure... these were what a vet told my friend about undersized dogs.

QUOTE(Pennywise @ Sep 23 2007, 11:57 PM)
I just came back from my friend, J's house. Apparently, J's sister, X bought 2 dogs earlier this year. It's a very horrible experience for her, someone with little to no experience with dog.
1. Female westie of 4 yrs - was previously used as a breeding dog
2. Miniature schnauzzer from Pet Family - was told 5 months but actually 8 months when she bought it.

Now here is the interesting story.

For Westie Story:
A few pages ago, I wrote that I found this breeder Mr. Chan. When I was at his house, talking to him, watching his westies - he spoke to me about his previous litter. One was sold to a guy name Kevin from OUG, another was sold to a guy name Marcus living in Bayu Perdana, Klang and the last one, no idea.

Now, the funny thing is, X bought this westie from a guy name Marcus too! who said he got it from a breeder who lives in USJ 6 but the breeder's name is Mr. Chan too!

See, here is the funny thing, Marcus keep telling my friend's sister, X that Mr. Chan dont simply allow people to visit his dogpound but actually Mr. Chan and my friend were LIVING IN THE SAME NEIGHBOURHOOD!

Conclusion: This Marcus guy con my friend's sister, X for RM2.5k just for that 4 years old Westie beetch. I'd like to believe that Mr. Chan just innocently sold his 4 years Westie beetch to Marcus but didnt think Marcus would con my friend's sister.

For Miniature Schnauzer Story:
The next thing, we talked about the MS which is actually a Standard Schnauzzer. After buying so many months from Pet Family, they are unable to produce the cert to my friend's sister, X. They said they cert has problem with MKA and is currently with MKA. X called MKA and MKA said the cert actually with breeder. After talking more details, X mentioned that the breeder may be from Kepong as the vet is from there. So, I told X to show me the medical card and it is the exact same medical card with Casper!!

Conclusion: Maybe this MS dont have cert to begin with but Pet Family con my friend's sister also! The breeder probably didnt have anything to do with this again but it's the pet shop that setup stories like cert with MKA, got problem and etc.
*
Wah..... kena cheated. But are you sure is a standard schnauzer? Coz standard, quite big, almost like a large mongrel size.... It could be just a larger size of the MS.

This why when buying dogs, need to do alot of research first, best is never get from petshop and always get directly from breeder. Never believe agent or reseller or breeder's friends.... always something fishy about them.

QUOTE(madmoz @ Sep 24 2007, 12:21 AM)
hmm... did not know that they are standard schnauzers in Malaysia... some of the larger M.S. around are actually the breed 'standard' size, and most of the rest are waaay undersized... esp those you get from pet stores, again smaller dog syndrome
*
Yah, alot are undersized.... sad.gif

All dogs are smart.... but the list is for dogs which are very eager to learn and obey very well. Border Collies are dogs that live to work! They love to do activities and to make their owners happy. That is why they are naturals when it comes to herding. They got this instinct that drives them to help people. But keeping a border collie in the city is not a very good idea, especially apartment or house with very small land. The border collie can go "Gila" if you do not provide it with stuff to do. They will let their frustration out by biting people and pushing them as if the people are sheep.

This is why we got agility classes. Dogs with loads of energy gets to burn off their energy with agility programs. It keeps the mind focus, builds muscle and makes the dog work hard.

In many cities around the world, many border collies end up in animal shelters or border collie rescue farms coz their previous owners buy just for fun, never think about the lifestyle of a border collie.... pity.... and there was alot of demand for border collies during the time when the movie Babe was shown....

Same lah, when there was Air Bud, all wanted GR..... when there was 101 Dalmations, all also wanted a dallie.... Beethoven, all wanted St Bernard.... The latest craze was when we had Snow Dogs and 8 Below.... now you guys know what dogs lah...now you see classifieds, so many people selling....

Use Turkey ham... it is lower in fat and is better than pork ham.

Anyway, for me, the most powerful treat is cooked livers. Dogs love livers. You can get a bag of it for RM4 then boil it till cooked. Drain it dry and leave in the fridge. Not oily if you boil it. I also like to eat boiled chicken livers at chicken rice shops hahaha.

Oh, I dunno how long can keep coz we use it quite fast.... Coz why I would use ham as a 2nd choice is coz processed ham has spices and salt added.... some hams are cooked, some smoked, some cured.... all can last for a week or 2, some can last for months.... and those that last the longest are the saltiest.... The worst treat to give dogs are sausages.... it has loads of salt, preservatives and flavourings.... also, sausage contains alot of parts where we do not usually eat... all ground up and made into sausage, we can't see also what is inside.

Turkey ham is cooked, but try not to the those prepacked ham.... get the fresh ones. I bought a pack of prepacked Chicken ham from Carrefour, it became bad after only 3 days from opening....

Hmmm.... you can try low sodium cheese. Low in salt is good for dogs. You can still go ahead with ham but use turkey, somehow to me, not as salty as chicken ham.... or maybe it is just me LOL....

How about baking your own cookies? Liver biscuits, not only my dogs go crazy over those, even me hahahaha.... last time my friend gave me 3 packs coz each pack for my dogs, i ended up eating 2 packs.... LOL.

ahah... I can't imagine how your Hepy shake after peeing....

Anyway, about cheese. Cheese has quite high sodium content.... Even i is not good for humans to eat too much cheese, it is not just fat but salty and dangerous for high blood pressure....

So what you can give is cottage cheese. They sell in a tub. Another kind of cheese is find out the low sodium cheese. Swiss cheese is low in sodium... or you can get those for diets like Light Cheese.... but read the labels, compare with a few brands and get the lowest sodium content.

I eat Extra Light Kraft Cheese.... sodium content is 240mg per serving.... I think the normal Kraft cheese would have 260 to 270mg sodium....

Out dogs already taking sodium daily in their food stuff like treats, dog food... so adding more is not gonna be healthy for them. But if the cheese is to be used as a special reward, like given in tiny amounts(1 inch pieces), it is ok.... but if say you give a slice of cheese everyday, can lead to health problems later.

Those who bake cakes and stuff for dogs use cottage cheese or cream cheese or hard cheddar and Parmesan... this got lower sodium than those like commercial slices.

Added on October 3, 2007, 9:57 pmNow here is an interesting article about processed cheese... after reading this, I think I wanna buy block cheese now hahahah.... seems all those cheese slices are made from a lot of stuff that doesn't make cheese taste right.... read on.
