its ok as long as you dont push your car too much. The oil will get sticky when it is very long has been used without changing to a new ones rather than being so silky smooth so it might damage your engine internals.

i think he means the car odometer... he say he should change oil when 120000... smile.gif

not harm if over 500km... if engine condition is good, engine oil can last long too...
if over 5000km, prepare to overhaul engine anytime... tongue.gif

It depends on usage and conditions. Engine oil has to be changed if it gets too thick or too polluted. If your car has an oil pressure gauge, it has to be changed when the oil pressure is consistently higher than normal.

true. there's no problem driving around with black engine oil. the only concern is the particles left in the oil like dusts of metal from engine wear and tear.

If you always stress your engine and travel frequently, you can't follow the guideline to change your engine oil at intervals of 5K km(semi syn/mineral) or 10K km (fully syn). I've seen some people that change their fully syn engine oil at every 5K to 6K KM simply because they travel very frequently and the engine oil is black and sticky when they change it.

If your engine oil is still clear and fluid (not dark/polluted or sticky), you can still drive around, just dont over do it tongue.gif

is ok to service it later!

Even bmw also claims their engine oil can last 25,000 for each service!

Ask, bmw owners to claim whether is true! ahahah

It's ok for NA cars but not for turbo-charged cars... because of extra heat due to forced-induction and bad driving habits, the oil tends to disintegrate even before the 5000km or 10000km service intervals.

I service my car every 5000km but sometimes lower say 3500km or 4500km depending on driving style. If always cruise with minimal boost, service every 4500km. If not, 3500km and by then, the oil is usually thick and black.

A good oil and proper service intervals will ensure a problem-free engine for many years to come. Of course, proper driving style must be taken account of too.

if your engine oil is still clean even after you used it, i suggest you stay away from that engine oil next time
engine oil has got cleaning particles in it, thats why it will turn to darker colours after some mileage
if the engine oil stays clean even after you use it, meaning it doesnt clean the internal of your engine, and its rubbish tongue.gif

I want to ask you. How often does the car get stuck in traffic jams and you are using mineral oil? If it gets stuck a lot changing after the 5k means something but nothing too bad. The least it can do is to increase the wear and tear and it won't be felt to sound thats for sure.

I have the habit of changing before it reaches 5000km mark. It doesn't really matter much coz I travel about 10000km+ per year...changing early can only be good for the engine.

If you wanna save money on black oil, go for the cheaper oil. Its much better than dragging with dirty oil over and over again.

my oppinion is that we can change the oil in longer intervals. the 5K and 10K oil change is made up my mechanics and not the manufacturer. check for the manufacturer's guarantee...synthethic oils are guaranteed up to 40K km.

further more the 5k and 10k theory has been around since donno when ...and technology had improved so much over the years.

The whole concept is to keep the engine running smoothly with less wear and tear... So if you change late, your engine may face more wear and tears and spoilt faster... But 500 km should be fine...

quoted for truth.

another quote from Honda-tech.com regarding black oil

QUOTE
My oil is dark, should I change it?
This is a huge misconception that needs to be addressed. The fact that your oil is dark does not in any way mean your oil is ready for a change. A large percentage of the contaminants in your oil is 1 micron or smaller. Only particles 5 and up cause damage. The smaller ones are safely suspended in the oil. A diesel trucks oil turns black in the first few hours of operation, yet the oil is used for many thousands of miles. Only an oil analysis can tell you weather or not your oil is still good or if it needs to be changed. * It is important to note that this applies more to synthetic oil. I personally wouldn't run a petroleum oil over 3,000 miles or 3 months because of the breakdown properties.

Mobil 1 oils are likely to go 10,000 or 6 months though they make no mention as to how long it can really go, and I doubt there is much difference between their regular synthetic and there new extended drain oils they are marketing. Amsoil makes a 7,500 or 6 month oil, as well as a 25,000 or 1 year oil that is guaranteed.

erm...i think its the other way around
long distance travel is good for synths
if u travel alot, then u can rack up to 20k in a year on your synth before you have to change it
but if u travel very little, even if its 5k a year, then at year's end, you should change your engine oil
i've heard of people that push some newer cars to 40k on synths
but i dont think thats advisable unless explicitly stated by the car's manufacturer
synths are way more durable compared to minerals or semi synths and do not breakdown as easily
changing a synth after just 5k is a pure waste of money
might as well just use mineral then

err...i dont think engine oils does not have cleaning 'particles'
it has cleaning 'agents' i.e. detergents

i dont think you should go for cheaper oils
the oil film strength is not as good and therefore might cause excessive wear on your moving parts
not to mention they dont have cleaning agents like the better oils
you would be doing long term harm to your engine which would manifest in more costly overhauls in the future
if u want to save money, just go for good regular minerals
not semi or full synths wink.gif
