In case a massive offer comes for any starting CB, a replacement is readily available in the squad & there's no need to then go look for a replacement when the entire world knows a new CB is needed at that point. Also, realistically the club might very well have to sell a superstar player in demand to balance the books in order to enable subsequent unrestricted spending in other areas of need.
