Insurance agent claims cops wrongfully summoned her for using a handphone while driving
IPOH: An insurance agent has claimed that she was wrongfully summoned for using her mobile phone while driving.
Sau Peng Wan, 36, said she was stopped at a police roadblock on Jalan Sultan Nazrin Shah on her way to Greentown from Gunung Rapat at about 6pm on Oct 15.
"I denied it as my phone was in my handbag all the time," Sau said, adding that when she asked for proof, the policeman who stopped her said a colleague had seen her on the phone.
"He issued me a non-compoundable summons and asked me to sign it but I declined.
"He then threw the summons through the window and told me to go to court to fight the case," she said.
Sau said she tried to lodge a police report at the Gunung Rapat police station but was turned away.
"I was told that they don't accept reports against the police at the station," she said.
"My husband then suggested I send an email to the police Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS)," she said during a press conference held by Perak MCA Public Service and Complaints Bureau chief Low Guo Nan on Monday (Nov 16).
Sau said when she did not receive any feedback from the police, she turned to Low for advice.
"Low told me to print out call records from the telecommunications company as proof that I did not use my phone," she said, adding that she bought a camera and installed it pointing inside the car cabin in case such an incident occurred again.
Low said the police needed to show more professionalism.
"We respect the police and the work they do, but I hope they can show proof before they take action.
"Sau now needs to go through the hassle of spending time and money to go to court," he said.
Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said if Sau insisted she did not commit any offence, she would need to argue her case in court.
On the Gunung Rapat police station refusing to take her report, ACP Asmadi said JIPS would investigate the matter.
"It is an offence not to take down any report from the public. But if our investigation shows there was a wrongful accusation to smear the image of the police, we will take necessary legal action," he said.
