Hi guys. Longtime Windows user here planning to finally make the switch for Macbook. I realized i no longer do gaming and mostly just do work, reading and entertainment. Plus I was told that Macbook lasts forever and my experience with Windows it only last 4-5 yrs.
Few questions:
- I used Microsoft Excel and PPT quite heavily (financial modelling, build pitch decks) and since I’m familiar with Windows, thought of installing MS Office in Parallel Windows. Does 256GB/16GB ram sufficient for this?
- I use two monitors (one vertical and one horizontal) and I heard MBA does not support two displays. Is there any work around with this (I saw the usage of DisplayLink + 2-3 docks which is very messy, but just wondering if there’s a more seamless alternative) and does MBA support vertical display?
Thanks in advance.
Hi, sharing some personal opinion to you ah.
Mac don't last forever also, but it can work in optimum and acceptable performance conditions longer than PC for sure, provided the hardwares and electronics are still functioning in old age.
Shedding some answers that can help enlighten you slightly if not all:
1) You may or may not require to install Parallel Desktop for Windows in order to access the Microsoft Office files. There are third party softwares build for Mac that support equally good if not better thab Microsoft Office. I can suggest WPS. which is an open source and you can download and use for free from Apps Store if you do not need the cloud services.
Download Source:
https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id1468073139?mt=82) M1 chip only can support 1 external monitor natively, so the dock is required if you need to use more than 1 external monitors. Regarding the vertical monitor, its not an issue, but with 1 vertical and 1 horizontal, i dare not to say the same as i have no experience in this setting before.
I actually wanted to suggest that if its not urgent for you to get the new computer, perhaps you could hold your bullet until end of year after they launch new chipset Macbooks later this year with better processor. Rumors have it that it will be able to support more than 1 external monitor, but not guaranteed yet.
