I'm getting a MBA M1 later this month. I already have a Mac mini M1 but since HLB is giving 20% cashback, why not?

Anyway, to my question, thanks to lurkingaround, I was alerted to this thread about MBA M1 problems.

Has anyone here encountered similar crashes? Or is this just a first world user problem? fwiw, since updating my Mac mini to 11.2 on 2/2, I've had 2 kernel panics one on 2/2 and one on 3/2. None after that. Touch wood. 2 days ago, opening any video with VLC, it would play with audio only and a nice black screen. Had to restart to fix that.

My M1 is ready to ship!

I'm a little intrigued it's coming from China.

speak of the devil lol. first time experienced kernel panic today. at this rate, i'm just half-half about my M1 already. so many bugs that its getting a bit too much of a running joke. hopefully Apple really looks into ironing it out together with M1X.

some of my mac apps also not working properly.

Did you guys restore from Time Machine or installed everything from scratch?

I did mine from scratch while being mindful to keep the number of Rosetta 2 apps to a minimum.

I had no panics nor crashes with 11.1 but then I only used it for a short time from 19/1 to 2/2. Updated to 11.2 on 2/2 and had 2 panics since. One on the same day and one the next but none thereafter

Also a few other minor problems.
1. Video would play with a black screen. VLC+mp4 or mkv. VLC with mpeg2 in a DVD folder. Once so far. It happened after I transcoded 2 DVDs to mkv with Handbrake. May be reproducible. Had to restart.
2. Safari losing Command-~ shortcut for switching windows. Quitting doesn't help. Had to restart. Once or twice so far.
3. Command-Tab app switcher would sometimes get stuck in my 2nd monitor and refuses to come back to my main monitor. Then after awhile, it does. Psychopathic Neural Engine at work. Happened a few times but not that often to be annoying.
4. Telco phone calls via my iPhone seems to be a lot less reliable than my MBPR Late 2013. Keeps disconnecting or losing audio or mic. Happens half the time. Enough for me not to want to use the Mac to make calls.

The only thing special that I have that may be different from you guys is that I have a 3rd party kext running, Tuxera NTFS. To install this, I had to change my Mac's Security Policy to Reduced Security.

And I have one System Extension running, Little Snitch.

Solved, OSI Layer 8 error.

The App Switcher follows the monitor where I last accessed the dock.

Initial Experiences
- Unboxing was super lovely
- Did a manual migration because I wanted to ensure I have as little junk come along as possible - which turned out to be super tedious because I have a lot of customizations.
- Performance is really fast
- Also runs reasonably cool

Problems OOTB
- BT mouse stutters (Logitech M720). Lower tracking speed to fix.
- Does not run Lunar, a tool I use to sync my external monitor brightness

Hi people ! Just want to share my MBA experience for people who needs any info or queries.

1) MBA M1 works with an external monitor with 144hz on 1080p monitor. Not sure with 1440p monitor as I don't have any. HOWEVER, 144hz only works with a USB C to display port to your monitor. The USB-C hub to HDMI monitor does not output 144hz, only 60hz. Never tried USB-C to HDMI cause I was reading online that the USBC to Display Port works.



2) If you want to play casual games like me (dota, indie games, etc etc), please not that the input lag is really high on the native screen. It is recommended that games should be played on an external monitor (Dota gets 90-100fps before the MBA gets hot, but after playing for a few hours, frames will drop to 50-70fps. All of this is based on the preset lowest settings)

3) The USB-C hub that I use is making my Touch ID buggy, as sometimes it will detect my fingerprint, and sometimes it doesnt work at all. I am using a ugreen USB C 10 in 1 hub to charge my MBA (with the original MBA charger), along with 3 USB A hubs for my keyboard, Mouse dongle, and Microphone. My external Speaker is connected to my monitor instead of the hub. When my USB-C hub is connected to the MBA, it will make my touch ID buggy, but when I remove it, the touch ID will work perfectly fine.

4) Sometimes the USB-C hub does not even get connected if my USB-C to Display Port is connected to the monitor, and vice versa, but sometimes it does work. Have to plug in and out multiple times to get both to work simultaneously. And even if both manages to connect, there is a possibility that the USB-C hub is not working properly; mainly the keyboard being really buggy with random keys registered. After plugging in and out a few times then it will only work as per normal.

5) I don't know if it's the USB-C hub or USB-C to Display Port cable, or a software bug that screwed up my MBA's webcam, but as of now, the webcam green light indicator lights up on it's own even though photo booth, facetime, and other programs that require a webcam it not even turned on. To add to that, my webcam is completely not working at all now. Currently there is a faded green light that is turned on all the time even if I shut down my MBA, I need to find a day to book an appointment with machines to get it diagnosed and fixed.



6) When sticking vinyl stickers on the keyboard or placing keyboard mats on MBA, PLEASE PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS. There is a possibility that your sticker / keyboard mat will get stuck to one of the keys in your keyboard, and when you try to pull it with force to get the sticker out, the keys might snap. Happened to me when i was installing my dbrand sticker. the right arrrow key came off, and i couldn't place it back myself. So at first when I went to book an appointment at Thundermatch's apple authorised service centre in putrajaya, The technician checked the problem and he concluded that the key is unfixable and the whole keyboard has to be replaced; for a whopping RM1300 as they do not have any specific parts at that time (it was mid January 2021). So I booked another service appointment to Machines KLCC, fortunately the technician there helped me place back the keys without any charge, but he said that there might be a possibility that in the long run the keys will be come off due to the hinge bent from the pulling of my sticker. Price is the same; RM1300, no individual parts at the moment but have to replace the entire keyboard.

Conclusion : All in all, the MBA is a really good performing laptop / macbook in terms of productive work, office, and games. Just that there are loads of games that cannot be played, there are a lot of bugs and accessories made by third party manufacturers will bug out the macbook or possibly brick it. That will not stop me from using it everyday and it's the best investment after such a long time

2. You can consider capping your frame rate to 60fps in the graphics settings. The laptop won't have to work as hard.
3-5. Sounds like you're charging your laptop through the USB hub. The MBA M1 is very sensitive to voltage fluctuations. It could explain your multiple electronic failures.

i think the 3-5 is really really important for people to know. If there is another way that my monitor can output high refresh rates without taking up a thunderbolt space then I will highly consider charging straight to my mac. Any USB hubs that you know that is reliable and has many USB ports? Would really want to change my current one to prevent future problems

Any of the UGreen or Anker hubs are fine - but the rule is the same for now - do NOT charge your M1 MacBook through a hub. Charging needs to sit on its own port.

You can try the UGreen USB-C to DP hub - I don't have personal experience with that specific hub though.

That aside, try to get the laptop replaced - then from then on, charging needs to be on its own port.

logically looks promising since most of the time i only using my macbook at home. would be best if able to skip the charging and run purely from power adapter

Apple Store doesn't seem to sell them anymore, and I doubt resellers carry them...

Need to use this coz the default power cables that came with my MBA kept electrocuting me...

I used this with my MBPR15 but I got electrocuted anyway. Easiest way to sort this out - get a foot rest like the IKEA Dagotto. It's better for your posture anyway.

I've used this from my existing 2010 MBP, the electrocution stopped... But since I'm still using it for my MBP, I have to source a new one...

Foot rest can't help coz most of the time my ass is on the floor...

Yup. 16GB RAM will help to reduce wear. Unfortunately, not much else.
