actually for me, from 3x to 1x system is manufacture cut cost and reduce the material they use but keep selling the same or higher price. Some more can eliminate the old bike and force people buy new. They do like what electronic culture do. With no backward compatible anymore. This very significant when shimano introduce the MS hub.
*
Yes, I agree. This is how they force people to buy new stuff whenever they introduced a new industry standard, e.g. non-tapered to tapered forks, 26 to 27.5, non-boost to boost, etc. Change a bit of stuff or just tweak a bit. They will stop selling the old stuff so that you have no choice but to eventually upgrade or buy a new bike. lol.

To be fair, I used 2x before I changed to 1x and thought 1x made a lot of sense. It works for my riding and I really like how much cleaner the bike looks without the extra chain ring, FD, left shifter, cables. biggrin.gif

Hihi... no matter how business still business, they will think a way to cheat people buy new. Even now with eliminate the FD and extra chain ring but they still implement new cable for remote dropper post. LOL

Do you install chain guide in your 1X system?

Oh really? Maybe the early batch only made in Japan.
If you dont have the hub yet, just go 12s lah. biggrin.gif
Yeah, for sure the sunrace cassette is lighter.
Shimano cassette all steel, heavier but more durable I guess.
I have SLX M7000 RD with sunrace 46T cassette on my XC bike. So far no problem.
Sunrace quality is good. Specialized use them on their bike.

correct. So now seeking what is the best bang of buck component.

The whole industry has moved to 1x now. 2x/3x groupsets is almost obsolete. Even the XC bikes are all 1x. Because of the big 50t/52t cassette, range is not a problem anymore even for flats. Just need to get a bigger/smaller chainring to suit your usage. Makes it a lot easier for beginners to learn how to shift as well since there is only one shifter to deal with.
*

still cannot reach 2x range.

While i agree 3x is excessive, but i still think 2x is pretty good. Just 1 shift from FD I can change my bike setup from "climb mode" to "fast mode". I dont think I will give up that quick shift until Shimano can shift 4 gears down in 1 shift, so far XT shifter still limit to down by 2 gears per shift. (upshift can do 4 but down is still 2)

to be fair, dropper post is a must for trail riding. I cannot imagine riding without one today. Some new stuff are worth the money to upgrade, but not all of course. I have a oneup chainguide. Hardly any chain drop unless its really muddy or the chain is dirty.

I don't XC trails with ride high speed flats or road so I can be biased. I really feel 2x is not necessary for trail riding. No need for the extra weight and checking whether you are in the right gear or not. Just one shifter to think about if you need to climb, ride on flat or point down. If it suits you and your regular trails then of course no issues la.

I'm a SRAM guy now. Prefer the satisfying shifting feel of SRAM. Shimano just feels so dead to me. Wait till you try AXS though. Brings you to another new world of how you feel towards gears and shifting. brows.gif

correct, diff people got diff need.

I ride flat quite often on my XC hardtail as much as off road, so my need in gears range quite huge. imo, even 38Tx11t I still dont think it is enough.

Have you try 38Tx11T ?
Im waiting for my 38T chainring to arrrived.
Right now Im on 32oval and its definitely not enough when on road. Speed 28kmph leg spin like crazy already. sweat.gif
I hope the 38T can make me cruise atleast 30kmph average is enough for me.

my bike is 28-38t & 11-42t

38t definitely can do 30km/h but still spin more than you like.

Currently i'm using Giant Talon 2 (gift from someone).
It's 8 speed causing my leg mau patah during uphill. But cant complain since its free.

Planning to upgrade to SLX 12 speed. Is it good enough?
What component do i need though?

Anything will feel better than 8 speed really. SLX 12spd is a good value buy. Won’t go wrong. You may enjoy the bike even more.

Two things that I can think of is hub and bottom bracket. You will need to change to a microspline hub run any shimano 12spd. Bottom bracket also likely need to change to fit the crankset. Best to ask a shop or mechanic to check for you.

Hmm... if you can not ride up hill change new group set won't help you much.

8 speeds 22 32 42 + 11~32T ?
Max - 3.82
Min - 0.69

12 speeds 36T + 10~51T ?
Max - 3.6
Min - 0.71

Something must be wrong somewhere.

If youre upgrading from altus or alivio then the SLX 12s is worth it.
The range is not so much different so it doesnt effect your uphill experience so much.
But in term of shifting quality and the Rear Deraillure robustness, the upgrade certainly is worth it.

You basically need a new whole groupset minus the brakes.
Cassette, Chain, MicroSpline Hub, Shifter, Rear Deraillure and crank.

trails are in great condition. 99% of the fallen trees and deadfall over MCO have been cleared. best thing is very few hikers. last 3 weeks..hardly any hikers, like back to 2018 period

Gear speed almost has no signifinact on climb ability as all modern gear (7 speed and above) have a similar gear ratio range... blush.gif

why pay extra for SLX?

normal Deore M6100,M5100 is good enough, unless you are going for 2x12

like other said for 8 speed(I assume is 3x8 speed), I dont think is gear problem. it is either you bike way too heavy or you fitness or your saddle height.
