using McAfee instead of Kaspersky engine..

TERRIBLE move. Kaspersky outperforms McAfee in every way possible.

For those who closely monitor the security industry would have known that there is an internal turmoil in Kaspersky right now between Eugene kaspersky and his ex-wife who is also a major shareholder in the company. It has been reported that there is a power tussle between the 2 and is corporate decisions could be made reflecting that tussle. What a pity.....

Jeez, that is darn bad news. Kaspersky is one of the best, and now...

But then, worry not, there is still at least free AntiVir.

Cheers...

My AVS still able to updated and woking fine... thanks god.. hehe..
There some extra addtion in mcafee scan plus compare to AVS. AVS just provide viruses protection, while mcafee virus scan provide firewall, spyware protection and viruses protection! I tried to install this new AOL mcafee, but sad... not able to... i think maybe for now it's just for US citizens only, coz when u click "sign up free AOL email" they just listed US country only...

I still can install AVS and runs no problem...
But there will an expiration date...

You'll need to put the key file with the installer and install.

Do i need to remove AOL AVS first? (mine expired at 31/12/2007).
I installed this Version: 6.0.0.308.

Before installing Shinjite's AOL AVS?

After installed it, what is the date displaying?

i dun think the av update period still can last long for next 2 month also, as it is free, pgrogramer will usually focus on the current AV by Mcafee, but not the old AV by kas.

The Avira free edition usually will have slow FTP transfer rate, but ocassionally I can get 40kB/s.

You may need to rerun the updater a few times just to get into the FTP download queue, but usually it will not take more than 3 tries, otherwise I just try again the next day.

If you consider this as a "problem", then too bad for you.

Lets clear this once and for all.

AVIRA AntiVir DOES NOT Use the Kaspersky Engine. Neither does it use its Updating Modules, thus the EXTREME Slow Downs in Updates.

Why is it slow? The explanation is simple. If you are downloading almost the whole 1-3MB worth of files, it ought to be slow some how.

Thus, For those with high speed connections, refer to these sites to download a full package of the updates. Remember to use a download accelerator or download manager to make the experience more bearable.

http://dl2.avgate.net/down/vdf/ivdf_fusebundle_nt_en.zip

I use the second link more often. Less corruption, less traffic too.

The file should come out to be almost 16MB, but rest assured, the traffic there is far less, thus not needing to wait for FTP Line up.

Cheers!

I don't think there's a need for me to update as I can still update without problems... The only thing is if I reinstall it with my *.key and my subscription turns to 2008 then I'll be more than gladful to do so... tongue.gif

As a matter of fact, I am using AVIRA quite fine.

Another option is NOD32, if you want to save money(apparently), go find the *ahem*s yourself.

Cheers to all!

i'm really doubting avira's performance, sure the detection rates are higher than kaspersky, but on many occasions it failed to properly clean/delete the viruses from my thumbdrive and pc.

Whats the use of detecting when it cannot fix the problem ?

Really? I believe that AVIRA's detection is lower than Kaspersky, even for False Positives.

Clean/Delete viruses? Well, if you know what you are doing, and you know what to do, that shouldn't be a problem.

Though I quite agree with the last sentence.
"Whats the use of detecting when it cannot fix the problem?"

No, that was not the internal affair I meant.

It has something to do with s "split' within the company or so. AOL was afraid that AVS will be affected, thus they pulled out Kaspersky's Engine. Sad but true.

Cheers!

Understandable. Just so like Spam, isn't it?

After this, stop using AOL when it expires. AntiVir AVIRA or ESET NO32 will make the mark. (Of course, this refers to other members who are pondering too. I know you gotten yourself a copy of ESET Security Suite RC 1)

Cheers to all!

I think many people mention about AVS here
but not much mention about AVG... sweat.gif

I think the reason we didn't talk about AVG is because this AV software very hard to substitute AVS......

Very well. It might be Security and Privacy subsection, but AVG sure does not perform that well anymore. That's why it is no longer being discussed.

Screenshots can tell many things about an AV, but with comparatives, you know even more about it.

GUI = functionality,
Comparatives = efficiency.

Norton is the User-Friendliest??
I don't think so... especially the NIS... I don't know how to configure the firewall rules in there... and it didn't give much explaination...

OT: LOL. Norton Anti-Virus is an Install and Go Program. Quite simple on the New Guys. NOD32 on the other hand, can be very traumatic. But, once you get used to the knack of it, it is one of the best AVs around. biggrin.gif

Cheers!
