Tested at Singapore Terminal 1 Burger King. Contactless works! I was expecting it to fail...lol
*
Try outside in the city and see whether it works

Airports failure rate as they have set accept contactless from all valid cards 🤦‍♀️

QUOTE(CommodoreAmiga @ Jan 21 2023, 06:52 PM)
Eh, what so special? Malaysia 9 out of 10 failed.
*
Failed because our banks doesn’t accept foreign issued cards 🤦‍♀️

I suspect mydebit has to do with it as local banks transact via mydebit instead using visa/Mc contactless

Tested at Singapore National Museum. Contactless Works!

Contactless overseas not many issues 👏

The only thing in Malaysia has issues because I suspect it is Mydebit network that Wise is not in it hence failure contactless 🤦‍♀️

I think it looks like same machine which was working at other places. So, maybe it's some setting or depending on the bank?
*
If it is the same most likely it is either the settings that is not allowed for the bank or the country network system is that is not allowed foreign issues cards

Won’t know unless you have NETS compliant card to try it out

Perhaps Wise did something on their end to make the contactless payment works in Malaysia.
When I got the card one year ago, contactless payment did not work at 99speedmart and few other places.

Yesterday I tried at one of the kiosk at KFC and it works.
*
Don’t try at KFC of course it works 🤦‍♀️

You should try those smaller local merchants and see whether it works

Hello,

The purpose of my question is to facilitate payment for loan in Malaysia. Currently passing on money to relatives, friends that visit australia to bring back to convert with money exchanger or exchange with them prior their visit.
Would like to find an alternative that won't trouble people much.

1. If Malaysia but working abroad having AUD bank account. Do we open a Msia Wise account or Aussie Wise account when choosing the country on sign up. Any difference?

2. Would like to know if Wise rate is better (after fee and wise exchange rate) than our local money changer?
*
Wise account in Malaysia limit is up to 20k hence not worth opening for it unless you planning to domicile long here and since BNM have FX controls your account would be riskier can be anytime been freeze them 🤦‍♀️

Open Wise in Tier1 regulated countries like UK and Australia

Don’t bother with money changer as they will charge you a bigger spread and you lose out at least 1.5%

You better off changing the money with your relatives to get better and fix value rather paying off another 3%

Newbie here, just opened Wise last week and seek for some advice:

1. I would like to transfer USD from my Fidelity Account to Wise. Is this possible ?
I have created the USD balance sheet in Wise.
Anyone tried this before?

2. Any amount transfer limitation in USD from Fidelity Account to Wise?
If let say 10K USD? I saw this thread we cannot hold RM20,000 in Wise more that 7 days.
.
3. Any amount limitation if let say I would like to transfer and convert the USD amount to MYR from Step (2) to local bank (MAYBANK/CIMB ETC?)
will local bank call for you to verify the source of your $$ ?

Thank You
*
Don’t bother with usd10k the most each you can transfer 4700usd before the account ia frozen and getting it unlocked will take time

If you transfer to local banks be aware of their AMLA procedure as some banks might clear and some will ask source of funds documentations hence it is bank to bank. If it is legitimate no need to worry too much 🤦‍♀️

Sending to local banks will incurred more charges and FX Spread

You better off spreading the amount in Wise transfer rather than transferring one shot

I tried to read the FAQ from Wise and it stated they will immediate transfer any amount over 20,000 MYR to you if you set up your external account.

Account will be freeze only if you did not withdraw the excess money in 7 days of time frame.

So transferring 10k USD to Wise is not possbile at all? if i set up the external account or directly convert to MYR and transfer the money to local bank upon received 10K usd in wise ??
From Wise:
We know that from time to time, you may receive funds into your account taking your balance over 20,000 MYR:

If you've already set up your external account, we will immediately transfer any amount over 20,000 MYR to you.

If you've not set up your external account yet, you’ll have 7 days to withdraw the excess money.  If you don’t withdraw it within 7 days, we’ll freeze your account so that we remain compliant.
*
Technically it would be transferring to wallet and it should withdraw the excess automatically to your external account

I suggest you to transfer in batches because to test out the functionality and also to break into chunks of USD and RM to see whether it will be limited to 20k because iinm the wallet for RM and USD doesn’t work well with it as before some had bad experience in waiting for the excess to be repatriated to your external account

You should test it out in smaller chunks before proceeding bigger amounts 🤦‍♀️

I am wondering whether to set up WISE to transfer RM to SG$ or set up CIMB SG. WISE have better rates or CIMB MY to CIMB SG for RM to SG$ ?

Thanks
*
Obviously Wise will have better rates than CIMB 🤦‍♀️

QUOTE(CommodoreAmiga @ Jan 28 2023, 09:04 PM)
WISW has RM10k limit I think. Large amount , you have to open Bank.account. CIMB SG FD rates also good now, comparable or better than some Malaysian banks.
*
Wise can only hold 20k max at one time due to BNM regulations 🤦‍♀️

I am so frustrated with receiving Wise card as they never arrived after ordering 2 cards. I have waited for a month long for the first order and the second order also a month, yet they never arrived too. I chose the free delivery, is Wise forcing me to choose the delivering fee to really send the card to me?
*
Ask Wise for tracking number and check which courier they are using

So far many of us since Wise have no issue receiving the card and check your address given is the right one

Are you sure though. Because Wise looks for the currency with the lowest fee exchange , and in this case the lowest fees to change to Cambodian KHR is AUD, then USD, then MYR, in that order...
*
Technically the best rate from Visa for the settlement day will picked doesn’t matter which currency 🤦‍♀️

Better put in some THB as well as it might be better rate as well

Wave is faster and I'm pretty worried about what will be the reaction of workers if I swipe the wise card at some mini snack store or small restaurant.

Btw according to you, I just need to deposit MYR into wise MY card in Malaysia and convert it into Baht whenever I need to use it when I'm at Bangkok?
*
Don’t worry too much about the store reaction as you have the right to use PiN 🤦‍♀️

just came back from bkk and used wise as much as I could but there are still a lot of downside that I think they can improve on
but overall its not bad if you don't have a CC with 0 foreign transaction fee
if you do, its better to use the CC instead of wise

hi, may i know can we open a tier 1 account at other country as foreigner? other than uk and australia, any other country also got tier 1 account? any special benefit?
*
Tier 1 is those country which is the financial hub in the world like US, UK, SG, JP and AU

You can open account in those provided you have a local permanent address and file a tax number for AMLA purposes

If you don’t have both forget about it 🤦‍♀️

Btw no special benefits just that the ease of transfer less restricted as to BNM FX capital controls which restrict the size

Before you open such accounts you better learn up about their taxation 1st before taking the plunge as you might hit with taxes without knowing it as they will even tax on your savings account

if i want to make online payment in THB, do I need to top up in MYR or THB?
*
Either way works because even in MYR it will automatically convert to THB for you on the payment gateway

If you want to know the exact exchange rate then you convert from MYR to THB then

OCBC Debit Mastercard also don't have markup for foreign currency. But limit per swipe only around RM5k.
*
Limit per swipe it is based upon your account balance 🤦‍♀️

But if anything more than rm10k per swipe be prepared for additional security verification and calls for that transaction

Limit per swipe is based on the account and card transaction limit, NOT ACCOUNT Balance. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I have done more than 10k per swipe and i didn't encounter any additional verification. These security measure varies according to bank, especially when you rarely spend too much under that account. And since this is a WISE thread, no additional verification are required for the WISE card. 🤦‍♀️
*
I am talking about OCBC 🤦‍♀️ as mine is based upon my account balance as it is not based on card transaction limit unless you have the set controls

For Wise it differs because you haven’t swipe the maximum amount yet as it will trigger the app for verification 🤦‍♀️

Swipe physical card needs verification? Exceed what limit? Usually I only use virtual card. Since contactless most place don't work, I hardly use it, but I like to use it for parking nowadays.
*
Try almost the maximum limit of rm20k

I recently tried AUD6k got app verification pop up for facial recognition before only allowed to proceed

Small amounts they don’t bother much
