Hi,

After the PS3 1.90 firmware update, I have problems reading any type of disc (whether it be Blu-ray games or movies, DVD movies or CDs)
The disc reading icon at the top right corner of the XMB keeps blinking, and does not stop.

Looks like I have a disc read error on all types of disc


Any possible way to overcome this ?

doubt theres anyone in malaysia who can repair this except sony. But they havent officially launched ps3 yet.
If you dare, dismantle your ps3 and check the reading laser thingy. xD
Doubt its the firmware though. Correct me if i'm wrong. If it IS the firmware, just downgrade it hahaha
..or, wait for the next firmware which might fix the bug. Do some googling while you're at it.

I really doubt it's the firmware problem. It's just a coincidence after you update to the latest 1.90 firmware you can't read all the disc. SONY is well known for having crap lenses since PS2. I remembered last time my PS2 lens went out after 3 months of having it. PS3 lenses are already available. You can get it from eBay.

I doubt if you send it back to the shop where you bought it can do anything for you as you must know there is no official warranty for any consoles bought here in Malaysia.

There's a lot of sites that can guide you how to disassemble your PS3 and change the lense. The price is around RM260 incl shipping and the model number for the lens is KES-400AAA.

You're lucky because you're living in JB , ppl like me who are living in KL or other places are really fcuked up . For me it doesn't matter as I'll repair it myself. I love DIY...

yeah i've read thru other forums that quite a number of PS3 users are having lens problem.

I like said bro, SONY is well known of producing crappy lenses. but still better than M$ 3ROD problems.

Anyway, I just called Sony Service Centre (M'sia), and they said that they do not repair PS3s.
Reason: It has not been officially launched.
My guess is that they probably do not have the equipment to repair


Going back to the guy that sold me the PS3 does not sound like a good solution.
My xbox360 took 5 months before it came back from repair !

Changing PS3 lens doesn't need any high tech equipment. Just a normal tool like Philips screwdrives and some brains.

I've changed a lot of PS2 lenses, I've opened up X360 DVD-ROM drives and changed the lenses even the drive. So for me there is no difference with PS3. I've opened up PS3 before. I mean disassemble it parts by parts.

In answer to rx330 ... yes ... the Sony service centre is a toll free number (1300 number).
At least now I know for sure that the service centres here would not repair them.
Actually, I even asked whether they could help to send it to Singapore or HK ... and even voluntered to pay for all expenses (i.e., transportation and repairs).
Still .. Sony said no ... hmm


I'm thinking of calling Sony Singapore .. u think they would layan me ?

If you are really gong to dismantle your ps3 and check to see the problem, then might as well throw in and upgrade the hard disk drive to a 120GB capacity.

What version are your PS3? Sg, HK or Japan? Kalau Sg.....senang sikit, hantar Singapore.

You know, i don't wanna say this but, i think it was obvious and everyone else here already knew Sony Malaysia wouldn't give a shit. You were wasting your time calling them. Reason is because, PS3 has not officially launched here, so its not considered their product. Even if it ALREADY launched, and you bought a Japan model for instance, they would still not layan you. Its not an international warranty.


Good, now you're getting it. Check the serial number of the PS3.
For example, PSPs have serial numbers
PSP-1000(japan model)
PSP-1001(US model)
PSP-1002(eur model)
PSP-1006(local model/asian model)
PSP-1007(taiwan?)

and so on and so forth....(i might be wrong though. But PSP-1000 is definately japan model)
The smallest number/first number is usually the japan models, followed by US, EUR and further away.

Sorry, Ive yet to see a real PS3 and dismantle it for myself. But ive been dismantling PSPs and PS2s and PSs. Its all the same.
My advice? dismantle it to see for yourself how a real PS3 actually works on the inside. See if it really is the lens that is broken, or maybe theres something stuck. Because we're really making assumptions here without seeing the real thing. And while you're at it, maybe upgrade the HDD as well. You could even mod your PS3 lol. DIY FTW
Do some google for videos on dismantling a PS3(youtube etc. etc.) if it makes you feel more secure. Besides, theres a first time for everything right? instead of whining and depending on others for help, do it yourself.

Actually, if you're willing, you could send it to me for repairing. I won't guarantee you'll get it back though ahahaha

PS: although, i think PS3 lens would cost far more. It IS blue lens instead of red after all.

due to high temp during long hours of gameplay ~ its advisable not to turn off yr ps3 immediately ~leave it for like 5-10 mins then turn off as it will prolong yr ps3 lense life-time.

btw, replacing lense on yr ps3 is sooner / later ~ just a matter of time. any of you had the experience of dismantling the ps3 lense ?

very scary cos we hear more & more local cases of ps3 lense problem. is the lense really that sensitive/fragile?

i updated the firmware to 2.01 and it is still fine.... dont think its the firmware...

if im not mistaken...if u never let ur ps3 EAT any illegal media (CD o DVD) i belive there's no point to be afraid to upgrade...

unless u ever put those media or u juz forgot that u once play those media...

for those who encounter the prob...u can change the lens or at least TRY to change it....coz there's no guarantee that ur ps3 BDROM will revive...like mine...curse to be useless.....

erm...can i take back my previous statement...my boss just told me he cannot read any disc...he is in japan with his japanese ps3...all ori... cannot read after install 2.01...

i do suspect that the firmware had to do with this nightmare...if there's a downgrader....

Maybe there's some sort of bug or did you do anything wrong or following steps in a corrupted order?
Or maybe it's your hardware problem also. Who's the culprit? Well, you better send it to any repair shop and ask them what's wrong with it. That would solve the case!

I updagrade to 2.01 and my Ps3 still works. BD games at least.

sory bloodvinille...even those so called technician didnt even familiar wif this mechanism in the ps3...

hell...i myself help them figure out those problem b4 the defected BDROM working well...those technician need to be careful wif everything they doin so that theres no chances there that the ps3 would severely defected wif their action...as for me...helll...this my ps3 BDROm...i can tear it apart as much i like

Don't use your PS3 to watch DVD movies. Well you can play Blu-Ray movies but personally I make sure only PS3 games enter my PS3's disc drive.

the lense tat sensitive mer?! sigh.. but i think sony isnt tat stupid to allow us to play dvd and all if the lense is soooo sensitive..

it all comes down to luck..there have been reports of gamers saying they onli use it for games n the lens fail them as well...

I'm using my PS3 machine for pirate DVD everytimes...well up to diz point there're no show of problems yet...but if it do, I'll inform you all...

juz updated from gta4 disc.
then wana try play multiplayer so have to update to 2.3. somehow can play for some time, then it died.
Cannot read any discs now. sigh, so sad.
