The hostility between F1's arch rivals Ferrari and McLaren stepped up another gear on Friday, following the controversial verdict of the FIA World Council.

Maranello based Ferrari, enraged that its championship competitor escaped the sanctioning powers of the governing body despite being found guilty of espionage, took the unprecedented step of publishing a tirade against McLaren on its team website.

Jean Todt is quoted as accusing his team principal counterpart Ron Dennis of suggesting earlier this season that the pair sign an agreement to improve relations between the embittered teams while knowing that a rogue Ferrari employee was leaking secret information to his chief designer.

"There was an exchange of views," Todt is attributed as saying, "and, believing in their good faith, I agreed to sign this agreement on June 9. 
"

The so-called 'spying' saga, that has scandalised the sport ever since, then broke out after a photocopy worker tipped off Ferrari that Mike Coughlan's wife had tried to manipulate some 780 pages of Ferrari documents marked 'confidential'.

Todt said: "So, on the one hand, they had come to say 'let us trust one another' and, on the other, they were hiding serious facts but making no effort to inform us as would have been in the spirit and to the letter of our agreement."

A McLaren spokeswoman declined to comment, but Dennis has previously insisted that he only learned about Coughlan's possession of secret data on July 3.

Todt, meanwhile, vowed to keep fighting for the 2007 championships but said it now felt like "playing poker with a rival who already knows what cards you are holding".

oh ya when todd means by the playing poker synonym is that with ferrari's data they would know how a ferrari work and thus can be sued to their advantage either usiing it in their car or for other issues like exploiting weaknesses during races...

oh you know what ... coughlan is no longer working for mclaren. one needs to understand it, to put it into good use. As for now, we could only say coughlan is the one who understands the dossier. and it's 700 pages ... he might not even fully understand everything.

ferrari is still faster. yet they're still whining. they have been faster for most of the time.  The only reason mclaren is ahead for 20+ points is because ferrari's own c0ck ups. races like malaysia...oh and the recent euro gp. don forget their "not so good" reliability this season.

LONDON (Reuters) - Former Ferrari driver Mika Salo on Saturday clarified comments made to a Finnish newspaper suggesting that the Italian team had routinely spied on Formula One rivals McLaren in the past.

"What has been published in Ilta-Sanomat does not match the thoughts I wanted to express," the Finn said in a clarification provided by Ferrari.

"I would therefore like to make it clear that I was only referring to Formula One in the late nineties, when radio technology was still at an almost amateurish level, which meant it could happen that some radio conversations could be listened to randomly because of interference."

Salo was quoted on Friday, after a hearing of the sport's governing body into a spy controversy that has gripped Formula One, as saying that when he drove for Ferrari "we always spied on McLaren, listening to their radio traffic.

"After every practice session I had in front of me, on paper, all the discussions Mika Hakkinen had had with his engineer."

The Finn drove six times for Ferrari in 1999, twice finishing on the podium, after Michael Schumacher broke his leg in a crash at Silverstone. Compatriot Hakkinen was the world champion for McLaren at the time.

Salo subsequently drove a season for Ferrari-powered Sauber before seeing out his career at Toyota in 2002.

Ferrari were incensed after the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) found McLaren guilty of a breach of the rules at a hearing in Paris on Thursday but imposed no penalty on the Mercedes-powered team.

McLaren, whose chief designer Mike Coughlan has been suspended after a significant quantity of Ferrari information was found at his home, lead Ferrari by 27 points in the championship with seven races remaining.

The FIA found there was insufficient evidence that McLaren, who argued that Coughlan was acting in isolation, had used the information "in such a way as to interfere improperly" with the championship.
