Pole controversy in Hungary.
Fernando Alonso has taken pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix - but only after appearing to scupper McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton's bid by delaying the Briton in the pit-lane. While the Spaniard went on to record the fastest time of the third qualifying session, Hamilton missed the chequered flag by four seconds, preventing him from replying after topping both the opening phases of qualifying. Hamilton tells Dennis: Go f*cking swivel!
The full extent of Lewis Hamilton's temporary falling out with McLaren team boss - and long-time mentor - Ron Dennis came to light ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, revealing the heated post-qualifying exchange that was the apparent cause of Dennis' headphone-throwing display on pit-wall. While many guessed that the displeasure was directed at Fernando Alonso, after the Spaniard had blocked Hamilton at the session's final tyre change, analysis of the radio traffic between Dennis and his protégé provided interesting reading for Britain's Sunday newspaper buyers. The 22-year old allegedly swore at Dennis over the team radio, precipitating an angry exchange of views "Don't ever f****** do that to me again"," Hamilton was quoted by Britain's News of the World and The Sunday Times, amongst others. "Dennis hit back, blasting: "Don't ever f****** speak to me like that." But Hamilton responded: "Go f****** swivel." Things were rosier following the race, which Hamilton won from a pole inherited when Alonso was demoted five places on the grid for his pit-lane indiscretion, but the Briton admitted that there had had to be a lot of bridge-building in the aftermath of the session, in which he was accused of precipitating the blocking incident by not allowing Alonso through in the fuel-burning phase. Lewis: We don't talk any more.
Lewis Hamilton admits that he is saddened by the breakdown in communications between himself and McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso following Saturday's qualifying session at the Hungaroring, but insists that it will not affect his focus. The Briton revealed after the Hungarian Grand Prix that his Spanish team-mate had refused to talk to him, further widening the schism that first appeared in the McLaren line-up when the Briton proved his title potential early in the season. Although the pair attempted to project a healthy working relationship, the incident in Hungary appears to have been the final straw - for Alonso at least. "He doesn't seem to have been speaking to me since yesterday, so I don't know if he has a problem," Hamilton revealed in the post-race press conference, "I think it is always difficult, [but] I have had it with every team I have been in. "When you have the two most competitive people in the team - possibly the two most competitive people around, both wanting to win - it puts the team under immense pressure. It is just extremely hard for everyone to play fair and to make it easy. That's why sometimes it appears that one driver is favoured over the other. That's why sometimes I feel he is favoured and vice-versa. "I think going on from now, I hope he still speaks to me. I am easy to get along with, I don't hold grudges on anyone. If he doesn't want to speak to me than that is for him to decide, but I'm open." |

Is Ron tired of fighting?
Ron Dennis' emotional reaction to events at the Hungarian Grand Prix could pre-empt his exit from McLaren, according to rumours. The 60-year old team boss was clearly rattled by the renewed hostilities between drivers Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton after the former was accused of blocking his British rival during qualifying, preventing Hamilton from completing his final flying run. Dennis could be seen throwing down his headphones on the pit-wall at the end of the Saturday session, apparently following a heated exchange with protégé Hamilton, and reacted angrily with various team members and hangers-on. Alonso was subsequently removed from pole position by the stewards, and could only manage fourth place from sixth on the grid, while Hamilton took his third win of the year to re-assert his championship lead. The Briton later revealed that communications between the pair had broken down completely, while Alonso told Spanish reporters that he was not sure that he would see out his three-year deal with McLaren. "It's a very, very pressured job at the moment - would anyone like it?" Dennis told Reuters reporters as the weekend drew to a close, "You very often get the expression 'character building', but I can tell you I'm 60 years old and I don't need my character building any more. This is extremely challenging for me, emotional and stressful." Engine partner Mercedes had gradually been increasing its shares in McLaren, and has made no secret of its interest in possibly taking full control, possibly giving Dennis a way out should he want to take it. |

McLaren tell Alonso: Go if you want?
Ron Dennis is so fed up he has told Fernando Alonso he can go if he wants, according to reports in the press. Fernando Alonso has allegedly been told if he does want to leave McLaren-Mercedes at the end of this year, then the Woking-based outfit will allow him to do that, if he so desires. According to reports by British newspaper, The Times a 'well-placed source', which was not identified, has confirmed that McLaren boss, Ron Dennis has informed the double world champion that if he is really unhappy with things then the door is open. "My understanding is that he's been told he can go because they're so fed up with him," the source told the broadsheet 'paper. "Ron is just very p***ed off with both of them [namely Alonso and Britain's Lewis Hamilton]." Alonso has, so the rumours go, been unhappy for quite a bit of the season, as he believes that Hamilton is getting preferential treatment. The dispute at the Hungarian Grand Prix at the weekend, which culminated in Alonso losing his pole position and being bumped down to sixth on the grid, while the team was not allowed to score constructors' points - a ruling McLaren have yet to confirm whether or not they will appeal against - left Ron extremely unhappy. In the same report, Dennis noted: "We have two drivers who are contracted for several years into the future. We will respect our part of the bargain - we hope that the drivers respect theirs, because that's what a contract is about. Crash.net |
