Haha, i wholly agree! Easier for people to digest facts if it's from word of mouth compared to a page of text. tongue.gif I'll go through the links a bit before i go to bed.. smile.gif

Edit: It certainly was an entertaining read and easy to understand. Some comments? smile.gif In the simple approach, maybe you could list the heading of purpose, price, etc 1st before indulging in the explanations? Also, in the technical approach, it feels like the article is targeted towards people who don't intend to use multimedia/gaming capabilities of laptops. I think a fine word of advise, especially in the CPU section would be; if you really want the performance, get the 2nd best, it not worth the premium you pay "just to have the best". Just my 2 cents, hehe. smile.gif

even the highest end wont last long...
instead of spending 10k on a notebook in one shot, why not spend 5k for a notebook that can lasts at least 2 years and then buy a new one after that tongue.gif

10k on notebook just isn't worth it. it costs 2x more than a 5k notebook but doesn't last twice as long. smile.gif

EDITED : and yeah, you don't get 2x the performance either.

ahh. that's a seriously good point.

but HDD access also depending on application. so boils down to whether the cost of additional RAM justifies.

i still think it's good to get a step upgrade in RAM la.

I was saving my post count to keep it "555" by PMing every time I want to reply to anyone, but F it.

As I read thru everything, it comes to my mind to write a whole new idea for notebook buying guide, but i just couldnt find myself a good long time to sit down and write.

As you good in what u r doing, I greatly appreciate any suggestions that I can do progressively, building towards my future to-be notebook buying guide.

and i hope your guide will contribute even more to the cause of stopping people from asking "what notebook to buy ah?" without even considering the available options. smile.gif

it's like go into a shop and ask "what shoe to buy ah?" smile.gif it's a matter of understanding purpose and preference, unfortunately people here like to be spoon-fed.

it's when you give them the model then you'll see stuff like......
1. oh this brand i don't want la, logo ugly
2. this brand my auntie's uncle's daughter's nephew say no good - basket if you want to listen to that guy then waffor you ask here?
3. i prefer X processor
4. the looks not so nice la. i want grey color, thin like pancake but below RM 3k.

yadayadayada........ humans..........

exactly, i need like alot of times for this so it's gonna be awhile. I hope my approach will cover that. Good suggestion thanks. I hate repetition so that the purpose im writing it. Just like you smile.gif

That is definitely true. Usually those spoon-fed want to be spoon-fed for everything. Let alone choosing a laptop. Sometimes daddy even willing to pay for everything also lazy just to even choose. Losers.

hope tat u can help me wit it. wat is the cheapest price to get a Dell M1330 T7300 online? and the price for M1330-2Ghz is how much. If comparing Dell M1330 to Asus Z99 (refer to the 2Ghz model)and to HP DV2715TX, which model is better?

i hv around 3.5k budget, wan to get a loptop above 2.0Ghz wit at least 2G ram because i need to do Matlab simulations. i do play games, like CS, Dota.... but however since i need it for simulations, so i stress more on high performance laptops. Slow laptops will keep me waiting long time to wait for executing simulations. Good graphics will be an additional value to the laptop i buy.

Overall, i need is a good performance and stable laptop, but having good graphics at the same time, it's a credit. can u suggest any laptop for my requirements wit around Rm3.5K and meet my requirements. TQ

Seek advise from all notebook expert. Today we can see a lot of usage for notebook. Some notebook are made for gaming and some for entertainment. Wondering if we can make summary for each category for laptop. For example for gaming category what is the spec, screen size, RAM size and etc.

Just my suggestion because newbie like me kindda confuse to choose it.

Before buying a notebook,

Look at the specs, price, looks and also the warranty. It is always better to upgrade to a 3year warranty if it is affortable for you.

i would say look at specs, price, warranty then looks..there is no point in having a good looking laptop but the warranty sucks especially when there is a pblm in ur laptop..

take an example of sony viao..very good looking but when there is a pbm, then u have to go mid valley then u have to wait for what, more then 3weeks or 1month+ for it to be fixed? compare that with dell, decent styling but has (in my opinion) the best after sales service there is in this country

You can try Packard Bell Easynote C3... It served me for more than 4 years (bought it on August 2004).

depends on wat laptop u re getting, and that depends on ur budget...

current mainstream seems to be 9600M GT, slightly higher is 9700M GT... for ultimate mobile gamers, there's 9800M GTX...

IBM sold it's PC department to Lenovo...

iirc, IBM was and still is a much bigger company than Lenovo...

Toshiba is the best among all brands that u listed above.
Lenovo is cheaper compared to Toshiba and it is quite a powerful machine.

with your budget i would recommend u to go for Lenovo notebooks as TOshiba costs around 3k and above.

How "NORMAL" do you mean? College? Gaming? Daily online?

Currently using Studio XPS 16. She gave me everything I need, gaming(max out L4D perfectly), movie(if you could get RGBLED), music (nice speaker), college (if you burn midnight oils, the backlit was the best). What else? She's my gorgeous baby. =D

2 major problem, fingerprints on the palm rest and heat problem (cooler pad is a must)

Hey, just wanna ask here, is this processor good enough for vista?
Laptop is for work purposes and also some movie watching. =p
Assume RAM to be 2GB, and integrated graphics card

for those buying a new laptop please view some user reviews and check the battery life.

Standard is now 2 hours but this is low for me. I would go for ones lasting 4 hours or more biggrin.gif

No point getting a "portable" laptop in the end have to search for Power outlet every hour.

Hi guys,

Need your advice. I am planning to get a laptop for the requirement below:

budget: 1.6k - 2k
processor: intel C2D (or Pentium Core Duo, non-AMD processor due to personal preference)
VGA: depends (i not sure, see my Casual Task below)
OS: Preferable Windows 7 (Vista also can lah, no OS is a pain as have to struggle to find drivers, also don't want kacau by Overseas Kastam)
LCD screen: 13 - 14"
RAM: 4GB preferable (minimum 2GB)
HDD: 250GB (or more)
optical drive: DVD+/-RW (must need optical drive)
Warranty: International warranty preferable (need to carry it to oversea, New Zealand)
Weight: the lower the better (anything less than 2kg with battery will be great! but not compromise a lot with processor power lah)

My Casual Task: online, Facebook, chatting, watch movie, songs, Adobe Photoshop, Dota

Please recommend...thanks!

Dunno bout photoshop, but based on personal experience with a CULV and AutoCAD, don't expect smooth performance. B

4GB should be enough for your uses and is the ideal spot for notebook RAM, under current conditions anyway.

But as I said earlier, don't expect the world from the CULV used in the Sony. My only apprehension is that it would bottleneck your system so much till the point you actually regret getting it in the first place. But as far as mobility goes, CULV leads the way.

By the way, a couple more questions if you don't mind. Does it come with Windows 7? And of course, how much does it cost?

yup, with windows 7, selling at HKD 10980, ~RM 4900.
if SU consider CULV?
cause i saw ASUS launched with UL / UV series which is much cheaper than Sony....

Urmm can i ask this here?

How far does an average user makes use of a multi-core/thread processor?
Let's say user runs, mandatory windows background programs, a few internet browsers, word, acrobat, chatting programs, music players, torrents. Do these kind of programs make us of the multi-threads/processors available?

Imho, even if you manage to find photos from the sources indicating size differences between 11-14 inchers... you won't be able to tell since they are just photos... it would be best if you could go and have a look at the real things nod.gif

i have a simple question here...

a lot of sifus here commented that i7 is overkill for games...
is it a good thing or not...? >__<
in english, it sounds a good thing, but why does sifus here will said that i5 is better to use in terms of gaming...

if im not mistaken, i7 core can boost the speed, n close other core n act as i5... but is it i5 still better..?
so, in terms of gaming, is it i7 can become a bottleneck if the gpu is good enough to cope with the cpu...

thanx in advance for the answer...
correct me if im wrong... =)

Open up msconfig and go to Startup tab, see if it got disabled...
else, just reinstall the touchpad driver and it will install back the startup...

I have a little confusion now... I found in the latest laptop specs stating that it can support up to 16GB RAM, but previously i only found most laptop specs stating that can support up to 8GB.

My question, is it mean that the previous one only can support maximum to 8GB, while the latest one can go until 16GB. I already ask one shop in LYP, the sales person told me that both actually same because we can put highest RAM into the laptop as long as the RAM is compatible (example: DDR3 type, etc).

But i dont think so because if i not mistaken, the maximum of RAM for laptop is limited, plus depends on the motherboard. Maybe somebody here can explain about this.

Million thanks.

The maximum RAM size depends on whether the motherboard supports the RAM type and how many RAM slots in the motherboard.

For example, your motherboard supports up to 4gb RAM, and your motherboard has 4 RAM slots, then your laptop can support up to 16gb.

For speed, it depends on CPU, like 1600MHz only supported by i7 2720qm and above. i7-2630qm also can support but it is not so suitable.

I think this is clear enough.

Ok. thanks for your explanation. I just want to make it clearer. As from your example, a motherboard that has 4 slots and it supports up to 4GB RAM, can go up to 16GB. This is considering 4GB per slot, rite?
Let say when Kingston release 8GB of RAM, then can we put 8GB RAM per slot?

Like I said, the motheboard only supports up to 4gb, if it is 8gb, it is not supported, don't expect can support up to 32gb.

hi sifus here,

i am looking for a lappy which mainly used for cctv system monitoring as well as some documenting stuff.

Budget within 3k. Preferable longer warranty or solid built and no known issues maybe?

Can suggest me several models on this aspect please?

for laptops any time is a good time to buy, unless a particular shop is doing some massive promotion...

PC makers buy parts in bulk so prices is pretty stable for them... but DIY desktop is totally different... prices fluctuates quite a lot, especially for RAM...

If you want to buy a laptop, make sure it have good aluminium/or other steel/thick hard plastic backing and NOTHING by cheap plastics (even if it was rm2k).

This is very important.

If you want to buy a laptop, feel the monitor first between your fingers. If its thick and nearly a cm. Never buy it.

My dad and sis bought two brand new 2011 acer laptops with the same 14inch HD monitor. One broke a month after he bought it while my sister was sleeping and the thing shut down hard on the bulging part of the cable. The other broke just now while I was pushing it backward and the plastic edge of the monitor broke underneath my finger and broke the monitor instead...

For a thick 14" monitor, it cost rm1k to replace it than my 16" desktop monitor which cost rm400 last time I check.

NEVER BUY ACER LAPTOPS (except from Timeline series.. i'm using one, i know.. this thing suffered through everything including toddlers)

If Acer rep want to say something, I still insist on the monitor thing because... even if you have superwarranty, they never cover the cost of monitor replacement and funny how you cant sue the company or making a shitty monitor that was younger than my 1year old nephew whose mother going to kill me when she get back home.

They could have easily layered a small piece of steel at the edge of the monitor considering the plastic covering is fragile but ofcourse no...

real acer HD is 1k... am really depressed.. its rm700 when my dad replace the same 14 inch HD... seriously suck

looking at the 1/3 broken screen... you never know a thumb and a forefinger pushing the monitor away from next to the camera did that...

thank you acer for giving my sister something to hate me... again... thank and fck you

and rm700 is a lot... and im unemployed (am a self-employed writer)... mmg giler

Thought of buying MSI FX420 (FreeDOS) 14" this coming 2nd, 3rd or 4th dec PC Fair at klcc... I'm impressed by its USB 3.0 and its price (RM1999 in LYN's price guide) as well. Other specs are just like normal laptops... But it just don't have Bluetooth 3.0 (it's ok). Anyway my budget is below RM2k...

What you guys think of this laptop? Worth buying?

Given a choice between Asus Zenbook & Toshiba Portege Z830, which one would be a better option?

Is there any place where I can actually use a debit card to pay installments? Since I don't have a credit card.

thanks

Added on February 26, 2012, 2:48 amSaya tertarik dengan Lenovo.

Apa perbezaan utama di antara:

Essential B Series
Essential G Series
IdeaPad Y Series
IdeaPad U Series
IdeaPad V Series
IdeaPad S Series
IdeaPad Z Series

Sebagai contoh, dalam pricelist di kedai, ada tulis G470, Y470, V470, Z470.

Maaf, saya kurang mahir dalam English.

thanks ...at least i am a bit clear on buying it...

May I ask:

I am buying a laptop this week for engineering drawing and 3D rendering work. My budget is around RM1000..

Currently, i am considering intel/AMD type of Core duo, is it sufficient for my autoCAD drawing and environmental rendering?

or should i get a i3 or i5 series instead, however, it is slightly over my budget already..

thanks..

I'm stuck between these three :

A: N56Vz-S3088V, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT650M@RM2699[Bang&Olufsen], 4GB, 750GB, W7HP, subwoofer and backpack

B: Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2199[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm); backlit keyboard optional

C: Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2799[2.38kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm); backlit keyboard optional

I'm gonna upgrade to 8GB RAM anyways. HDD space don't mind, screen size don't mind, weight I don't mind sweat.gif The dilemma:

B and C: i5, 7200rpm vs i7, 5400rpm
A and B: gt650m, 5400rpm vs gt640m, 7200rpm
A and C: i5, gt650m vs i7, gt640m

Which one? rclxub.gif

i would recommend go for N56vz. the design is better over dell inspiron special edition. and yet the free subwoofer is very tempting.. yet longer warranty and higher graphic spec. smile.gif

You'll get something more relevant to your requirements within RM2000, though won't be anywhere close to first class in engineering drawing and 3D rendering.

In addition, if you have limited budget perhaps a desktop may fit your requirement better.

If you get even a rather budget one for bout RM1500, it would be like comparing heaven and earth. laugh.gif

6 years is a long time for a laptop (something with an average user cycle of 18 months). tongue.gif

Yup..you right AlexLai, because I'm wondering whether it still be in the good shape for the next upcoming years in term of it's hardware and software. Furthermore in term of it performance,it is very low. By the way is it this is the right time for buying a new laptop?Because from what I found, there will be new features of laptop coming in based on it hardware application (SSD,IVY bridge & so on....) which make me quite confuse, because I thought if I'm buying a new one, I would go for laptop using i7.

I'm using A45V. Very happy with it. Only complaint is the power jack, not as easy to insert as other notebooks i've used. I've used 3 types of HP notebooks from work and a few Dell laptops for personal use.

Battery life pretty decent in when in battery saving mode IMHO. Sound system not bad but must be elevated on a cooler otherwise will be muffled slightly.

The icecool palm rest generally works but does get slightly warm after a longer usage time. However will not be as warm as Dell inspiron or HP elitebook (sorry can't remember the model numbers).

Hi,

I am looking for a notebook, my budget is around RM900 to RM1200.

I bought my last Acer Aspire notebook in 2005 and it is still working for me without any problem. However, I feel I rather buy a new notebook than upgrade this notebook.

I bought another Acer 'netbook' end of 2009, which was damaged due to flooding at my home in September 2012. It served its purpose but I find the 'netbook' too slow for me.

I am still looking at Acer, however, I do not mind if you can suggest me other brands, such as Lenovo and Asus, but please provide me information on warranty period.

I am a home user and mainly will use this new notebook for internet browsing, skype, msoffice (word, powerpoint, publisher, excel) and translation (currently I need Win7).

I am not using it for gaming and design (perhaps, that is the reason for the longevity of my 2005 notebook).

I would like to find a notebook that is:
a. light-weight
b. will not easily over heat if turned on for more than 6 hours
c. not necessarily need to have DVD player/burner
d. using Win7 and easily upgraded to Win8, if my translation software gets updated
e. Warranty for at least 1 year (but have great support if anything happened after a year)
f. Installment plans for credit cards, if possible?

I look forward to your reply.

Hi! So I was hoping I could get some recommendation on a laptop for me and my father.

1. Preferred Brand: Sony or Acer
2. Budget: 6000-8000 USD
3. Usage: playing on facebook, business travelling, browsing
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 11.6-14"
5. Processors: I3 / I5 / I7
6. Preferred battery life: 6-cell, or at least 5 hours

I'm considering the some following options:
- Sony Vaio 14126
- Sony Vaio 14122
- Acer V3-471G
- Acer V5-471G

Could you please help me to decide..?

Many Thanks thumbup.gif

I just read your article ( http://tanji.me/mobile-computing/the-right...the-right-work/ ) and it helped me a lot. In fact, your whole blog is excellent! thumbup.gif

But 1 question, I notice many games like need for speed have a minimum/recommended requirement of something like this http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php...0Speed:%20Shift . So means pentium/celeron/A-4/A-6 with around intel HD3000 GPU can run smoothly? I dun need the latest games, just a casual gamer.

Hey man, sorry for mislooking your post laugh.gif
This is a pretty outdated thread haha, not sure why its still here tongue.gif
THanks for the compliments yo, apprecaite it notworthy.gif

For gaming performance, its better to look at the gaming benchmarks provided by Notebookcheck here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Game...ds.13849.0.html

These are really tested so its pretty much accurate nod.gif
It depends on the games you are playing and also your budget, but for the newer NFS games, Intel HD3000/4000 will not really be enough~
The good thing is that you can already get a very decent GPU at around RM2k nowadays thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

This thread seems more like a correct place for me since I want a buying guide and not recommendation, haha.
Sorry for messaging u, maybe I too kan cheong to get the ans. sweat.gif

Damn, my budget only 1.1-1.2k. Maybe I should wait a few months for the price to drop. Or how about older NFS games since that link only got newer ones? For example this 1 I posted earlier http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php...0Speed:%20Shift . Based on the requirements, can it run smoothly? I dunno how to compare with core 2 duo.

THe requirements for NFS Shift is pretty high, so I would say its a NO.
It'll be better for you to save up more money since the price will not drop too much I'm afraid hmm.gif
You can aim for this one~
14"
Lenovo G480, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1799, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS

*though you need to install your own OS

THe requirements for NFS Shift is pretty high, so I would say its a NO.
It'll be better for you to save up more money since the price will not drop too much I'm afraid hmm.gif
You can aim for this one~
14"
Lenovo G480, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1799, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS

*though you need to install your own OS

You can check for your GPU by (Windows 7):

Right-click My Computer > properties > Device Manager > Display Adapter icon_rolleyes.gif
Different Windows version might have some minor difference in getting to Device Manager but shouldn't be too hard to figure out laugh.gif

I have similar issues, understanding the specs is quite easy but picking a good model out of the many models is hard. Plus, picking a notebook with the spec you need with the best price might not be a good choice since u must check the feedback of the customer using notebook, you must check whether it's hardware of the notebook will last for a month or ten years.

I am planning to buy a notebook but my problem is there are too many models in the market, including old and new models. Of course, certain brand like Hp, Lenova or Sony make their product list more simple for the customer
but go ahead and check out the TOSHIBA or ASUS notebook list, there are just too many models without a retail price for comparison.

hi, i am planning to buy notebook at my current city which is Kuching but the price is like rm100+ higher than ordering online from seller or online website like ipmart/tech hypermart. Therefore, I am wondering is it safe to order from website like tech hypermart and will it safely sent to my doorstep from other place to Kuching? Anyone try using that tech hypermart website before? A laptop with i3/i5 + GT720m VS a laptop with A10 5750m + 8670m

Which offer a better performance in
1) Computing power. Such as daily usage and C# coding.
2) Gaming performance.

I know I'm asking for too much for laptops that are around 1.5k since there are all entry level device with really bad performance. Just want to know which combination is better which can fully utilize my budget.

Thx

I still think that currently the sweet spot for general use laptop is still the 3rd generation i5 with integrated intel graphics. Preferably one from the business grade - Thinkpad, Elitebook and Latitude. One can get 3 years of troublefree life out of those. I suppose that will exclude extreme gaming. I have not much experience with those because to me there is no laptop with discrete graphic that can yield more that 3 hours use comfortable per charge of the batt intalled. Business grades are just build a lot tougher and a lot easier to maintain due to their modular designed construction. Personally I wud buy a used business grade laptop with some balance from the original warranty than getting a current model from the consumer line.
They are built better, comes with higher quality batt cells and better designed cooling system. And I suspect better quality components too.
Yes the initial outlay will be higher but in the end the cost per month of using em will be a lot lower and consumer line. Problem is they are not generally available because you will either have to source for them from the manufacturer or you have to do some work finding a source for them. Ezytronic sells some of them Dells at lower than Dell's published prices. Buying one generation earlier means that you dont have to pay higher prices commanded for the latest line and I do find that construction of those prior to current thin and light laptops are much better than what they are now doing for them current crops. The weight penalty is just a small price to pay to get a stable system that has already evolved over 2 or 3 generations where all them minor issues have been settled.

Sony already announced that they will discontinue their PC segment. But i will still recommend other manufacture over Sony because they tend to be pricier for the same specs. For your usage i recommend i3 4th generation + Nvidia G820M. Other forummers might suggest something different but with your budget that is the best spec that you can get unless you're going for used notebook.

1) Asus X452LDV-BING-VX287B X-Series 14" - RM12XX

Other Manufacturer - Dell Inspiron 3000 15" -RM1499 (Dell MY Website)

i hv around 3.5k budget, wan to get a loptop above 2.0Ghz wit at least 2G ram because i need to do Matlab simulations. i do play games, like CS, Dota.... but however since i need it for simulations, so i stress more on high performance laptops. Slow laptops will keep me waiting long time to wait for executing simulations. Good graphics will be an additional value to the laptop i buy.

Depending of which version of matlab you are using better stick to win 7 instead of 8.1. There are lots of compatibility issue running matlab on win 8.1.

i would like to suggest about the warranty part since I learn from experience recently.
for example the invoice make sure they clearly state the warranty part hardware software period since mine the HP company refuse to replace my battery and claim it has expired although less than one year purchase..so REALLY make sure what items include in hardware and software is clearly written and make sure they printed it out clearly as you know malaysian style like to jimat kedekut miss something don't want waste reprint so they just write it down..make sure emphasis they print it out..as mention hp company although my invoice the seller clearly written two year hardware warranty, they refuse to acknowledge it. And another point, the after sell service i would like to add in more detail. Although they claim to come service, confirm how long will they come and service...since mine they promise to come within 2 days, after one week, just the technician come then service laptop, promise one day settle, only got laptop back after one week after urging the technician to give back since he said already settle few days earlier -.-||| and when the problem not settled, inform the technician after nearly two weeks done nothing. So i would say for the after sale service ASK as detail as you can the process before buying. Cause before that, I always just ask the general question till I face the HP company.

Hi all, Ive been looking for a netbook at multiple shops but all of them seem to have bad screens as in poor viewing angles and washed out colours. Is there a netbook with a good screen? Im using it mainly for documents and movie streaming. I need a huge battery life on it too. Dell Inspiron 3000 is good but the screen is unacceptable. smile.gif

well, netbook... nothing much you expect...
small form = $
small form + good screen = $$
small form +battery life - screen = $$$
small form + good screen + battery life = $$$$

normally is like that. how much you think you want to spend for it? hmm.gif

Any of you think this is a good 2nd hand temporary laptop to buy to bring overseas, for occasional web browsing and office documents editing or play movies.

http://www.lazada.com.my/refurbished-lapto...0.0.Xppvs9&ff=1

Only thing is I find that it has only 1GB memory and Celeron.
But many reviews on that item.

if only if u able to make sure it is still usable and reliable.. not all 2nd is good and not all 2nd is bad as well. but buying online.. if 2nd hand.. much better visit the shop and test.. dat is my opinion because not sure if there is any issue or dead pixel on lcd

Guys, are gaming laptops good in general as a normal use laptop and gaming on rare occassion - holiday, travelling, balik kampung...etc?

I'm looking at some laptops for work but the gaming laptop specs are so much better with better cooling AND comes with a great laptop backpack.

Looking at 4k and below price range. Laptops in consideration:-

I'm surprised.
Anybody knows if Malaysia is selling laptops at cheap price?
I am currently checking out the prices of laptops and have found that prices have risen. Is this because of our weaker MYR currency? I think how that MYR has strengthen a bit, then will the laptop prices also come down a bit? How long would we need to wait?

Hi guys. Wondering if anyone can recommend a laptop for me.

Requirements:
- About 13" / 14"
- At least 128 GB SSD. No HDD.
- Good long term quality and support
- Win 10
- Budget < RM 3k

Currently looking at Dell Inspiron 13 5370 series ( http://www.dell.com/my/p/inspiron-13-5370-...timonster=PD_OC ), specifically the RM2499 and RM2899 model. This is only for light usage (browsing, MS office, movies) so I'd also like to know if the 7th Gen Core i3 is good enough in the long run.

Is there anything better in the market? How is the general quality of HP / Lenovo / Asus / Asus these days?

Guys, are gaming laptops good in general as a normal use laptop and gaming on rare occassion - holiday, travelling, balik kampung...etc?

I'm looking at some laptops for work but the gaming laptop specs are so much better with better cooling AND comes with a great laptop backpack.

Looking at 4k and below price range. Laptops in consideration:-
Dell Inspiron 7000 gaming
MSI GL62
Lenovo Legion Y520
*
Will recommend MSI here since I owe one and its very good... (ok call me a fan lol )
MSI in general has better cooling system (other brand, same range has only ONE fan and maybe TWO heatpipes...)
I mean i am not a pro but do consider you spending few K already and if the thermal sucks it will affect your long term usage in general...
GL should be a good mainstream model for you, you can check here MSI GL link

Hi guys. I was surveying for the Asus Vivobook S14 (S406UA) with i5-8250U processor, which is the higher spec of the Asus Vivobook S14. Then I realize it seems like no online seller has this unit, they only have the lower spec unit with i3-7100U processor.

Does anyone knows whether Asus Malaysia does not bring in the higher spec Vivobook S14 to Malaysia?

For what purpose? smile.gif

I'm using 8350K, solid processor. Basically like previous generation i5 with 4c/4t.

Gaming wise it would work just fine with GTX 1070.

why are we discussing this one a "Notebook Buying Guide" thread? biggrin.gif

You should start a question at Hardware section.

Check out the Acer Swift 5.

I've been using it for more than half a year now, works great with Premiere Pro because it has i5-8250U and Premiere Pro can use Intel QSV to speed up work.

Can check out Dell's refurbished outlet. Their after sales service is pretty good with 1 year warranty including parts replacement, technician that comes to your location to repair and 24/7 phone support.

All included in the price. Can extend some more to 3 years.

Dear all,

Can someone recommended me a laptop that suitable for a student in Information & Technologies course?

Because I am trying helping my colleague to buy a laptop for her son.

My budget is RM1500.

Been looking & found some Thinkpad laptop (2015) models that has graphic card (Quadro) but afraid that might not able to support latest software.

Thanks.

Hi guys, a Malaysian living in the UK asking here for some help (cos there's a lack of discussion site here plus their discussion... Sucks hard)

I am in need of a slightly better laptop now but got no idea which one to get since there are many different opinions like Intel is getting worst, Ryzen is cheap and dependable, etc.

My current Laptop: Acer Swift 3 with Ryzen 5 GPU, 8gb Ram, 256gb SSD. Other than that, the vega 8 thingie seems to not working as I want. It works well before this but maybe as the time comes, lappie gets aged.

My problem: Video in youtube always stuck for a few seconds before it went back to normal. Too heavy usage (like two paused youtube videos on diff tabs, around 10 wiki tabs, maybe 1 FB, 1 Webnovel, 1 9gag) end up making my lappie either stuck and need to force shut down or blue screen.

My regular habit: empty files in my document or download, so literally no other files at all except what comes when I buy the laptop. My lappie doesn't close down as I always left my video pausing, so it literally never shut down at all.
I'm a writer, so it's a habit to open Microsoft Word + excel, quadruple tabs of OneNote, Grammarly, and four chrome browser with around 70-80 tabs. Nowadays been using one lousy waifu lappie to sub my 2 chrome tabs there to reduce my swift 3's stress.

My worries: this Swift 3 is around 1 or 18mth old I think, but issue already here. First of all, it even died from playing Warframe, Terraria, and the only game I can play is torchlight. The One Man Sky did not even load on this pc after download, and steam doesn't allow me to even refund it. (Sadness overload here)

Next is the budget. Paying 1k++ for a laptop that can survive 3 years ordeal is my ideal purchase, but here in the UK, a literally lousy laptop with a demand of 16gb, intel i7 or ryzen 7 is going to cost 1.2k and above pound, and much higher with graphic card.

So tell me, is it worth getting a new lappie or just bear with it?

I can assure you that prices will not be that high for the specs (since I also give laptop recommendations in LTT forums, which have users from lots of countries)

Just to confirm, you're buying in UK and looking for recommendations?

Been using consumer laptops since starting biz 2 years back and started failing eg laggy, crashes, etc despite using ori Win 10 & Office. Times are bad nowadays so I’m hunting used instead but had bad experiences with refurbished ones. Recently I came across “remanufactured” enterprise grade laptops which is half the cost of its current model. Anyone tried before?

Anyway, for this can give Acer Nitro 5 a try. Just within budget at RM4k.

hi, which laptop brand has the most service centre near klang/shah alam and easier to claim warranty if anything happen?
Why look for service center when you can just easily buy laptops from brands that provide onsite repairs?

Hi all, looking for a laptop with rtx3060 for some gaming but maybe mostly just torrenting. Is older laptop with rtx2070 also ok?

Budget 5-6k. In perfect world i hope for ssd + 1tb sata drive combination.

Any recommendations? Had been checking out Legion 5/5Pro and Asus TUF. Looking for full keyboard where possible.
