Dear all,

My old aged parents are getting clumsy and I found that they are like most of the time blur and forgetful. It is a bit scary to be to see their mental capabilities sort of degraded so much.

Like I can tell them something and then tomorrow or later they forgotten about it.

I am not sure what to do. Give them eat supplement? But what supplement? Or how can do to improve them?

Thank you

Im sure they just ran out of Fks to give. They been forcing themselv to do things they dont like for too long, now they just give up bothering about the world and life and wish to die soon maybe.

you must get them tested if they have Alzheimer's Disease etc. An Occupational Therapist can do MOCA test to score their cognition.
For temporizing measure, get them a white board and write to them stuff to remember.
Absolutely write on it permanently to: switch off the gas after cooking, not to open the door to anyone else unless known to them, to absolutely lock up the front door at night.
Train them (yes, I know its kinda harsh to write TRAIN) to look at the board everyday.
No supplements that can help in brain functions, mate.

You need to start with basic 1st.
-Eat healthy foods with a lot of vegetables and healthy fats. Cut on junks food and if possible to cut carbohydrates (is hard especially for elderly).

-exercise daily and even a simple 20-40 minutes walk help in slowing down aging.

-get sunlight(no caps, sunblocks or long sleeve) especially morning for mood and vitamin D.

Then only you add basic supplements like good minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.
-bioavailability magnesium (Dr best high absorption magnesium)
-zinc (bio life)
-vitamin B-Complex (life extension)
-vitamin C (any slow release 1000mg 2-3 times a day)
-vitamin D3 + K (life extension)
-astaxanthin 12mg (Carlifornia gold or sports research)
-Curcumin if they have inflammation pains (longvida or meriva)

The brands in bracket is just a suggestion. Feel free to do research further.
Hope this may helps.

Ginkgo Biloba does help to improve your parents' memory.

Make sure they eat healthy, can try to cut down on the processed food and make sure they get enough vitamins (from the food they eat).

Also good to keep the mind active, read books, do puzzles, go out for daily walks and exercise. Keeping mobility up helps as well.

Exercise and vitamins work.
Beef (zinc) is also good. Dr. Schmidt from Youtube has videos regarding mental issues like this, which is very helpful. He is a chiropractor.

Hey so sorry to hear that

Brain function degeneration is normal when aging. Do you have any family history of Parkisons or Alzheimers?

Are they taking medications that will affect the brain? Anti-depressants? sleeping pills etc.

Now, we still don't quite understand why aging causes brain function to decline but most likely reason is due oxidative stress. Basically the free radicals generated over the years causing damage to the nerves and neurons in the brain.

An unfortunate thing is, most cells in our body repair and regenerate but not the nerve cells. Once they are damaged, it's likely to be permanent. That's why the medications for Alzheimers don't alway work, and can only slow down disease progression and not cure it.

To help reduce oxidative stress, they need to be taking antioxidants - Vitamin A,C,E are the common ones. Grapeseed extract is good or Pycnogenol (Maritime Pine Bark Extract) are good, and another one is ALCAR (Acetyl-L-Carnitine).

Please note: ALCAR is not the same as L-carnitine. I'm not sure if you can find ALCAR in Malaysia, but it's available from overseas.

For more on supplements for the elderly, I have recently reviewed 100+ studies and written an article on that. In the article, I listed out 6 supplements I think are most crucial for the seniors.

Please feel free to read it and leave me a comment if you have any questions. PM me if you would like a more detailed chat.

Encourage them play games. Eg crossword games or chess and dam

These games can stimulate their mind and keep their mind being active.
Encourage them to read & learn new language too. It should be fun interactive so that they can be happy.

I noticed too if parents being stressful they tend to be very forgetful...

Agreed with Pjuan2013.
Not only your parents but also mine have similar situation. And my folks are in their late 80s. sad.gif cry.gif
