Hi, I'm going to Hokkaido mid-Dec with wife & a 5yr kid.

Planned to rent a car from Sapporo > Hakodate > Otaru > Asahikawa > Chitose Airport.

Any recommendations for car rental company? I checked Toyota Rent A Car and it stated that only able to book within 3months.
*
Got snow driving experence before? Know how to put chain on tyre? Sapporo > Asahikawa > Biei > Furano , snow will be heavy , road will be icing.
If don't have. All city you plan to visit are easy acess by train.

Thanks for the concerns. Driven before on snow for both left & right hand drive. But how heavy is the snow in Mid Dec? Cuz i'm not expecting it to be as heavy as forecasted in jan-feb period.

I planned to take up all the excess exclusion & NOC insurance in case shit do happen.

The reason we decided to drive as we are chugging luggages as well as I do love driving.

Any tips or personal experiences so i wont mess up more than i should?

Make sure you get 4WD. No matter what, 4WD only.

Evo, Imprezza or GTR?

If you got the money to spend. No problem but those car need advance (1 month) booking thru Email.
Japan normal car sedan / hatchback all got FWD / RWD / 4WD version. Japan Yaris / Vitz / Corolla / Camry / Prius all got 2 version.
4WD version will cost more & Japan exclusive....Most Japanese Car outside from Japan are normally FWD.
Nissan / Honda all got 4WD version which Malaysia Don't have...such as Honda FIT (Jazz) 4WD version , Honda Shuttle (Odessy) 4WD Version , Honda Freed 4WD version etc etc......

My fav rental car in Japan are Prius (4WD version). I always go for Prius XW60 , sometimes XW50 if 60 not available. If Both also not available then Yaris (XP210) (4WD Version) which is Malaysia don't have. XP210 are the real Yaris!!! Malaysia are XP150.....fxxx!!

Going to Osaka & Tokyo early November, need some advise/answer

Hows the weather (in person) ? from google is autumn between 8c - 20c
Like Genting/Cameron? normal sweater/jacket will do?
Pocket money mainly for food/daily transport etc, RM200/6500 yen +-
Enough for 1 day? (first time visit Japan) not sure on the price
Regarding shinkansen, from Osaka/Kyoto to Tokyo.
I plan to go Nara Park in the morning, maybe afternoon will travel to Tokyo via Shinkansen.
Need advise the following?
1) From Google, I need to buy ticket at Shin-Osaka Station? price is around 15k+- yen (not sure if price increased). Using Tokaido Shinkansen line
I need to buy a few day in advance? or is there cheaper option like buying online before traveling?

2) Should I take the Shinkansen from Kyoto Station? Direct after visit Nara Park
If yes, can i buy the ticket at any Station? or how?
*
Want Save money on Food can refer to Page 71 Post #1417
Nara are nearer to Osaka City, more further away from Kyoto. Kintetsu are the quickest way travel between Nara & Osaka.
Shinkansen Ticket no need advance booking unless you travel on Golden Week. Just buy on spot. Osaka to Tokyo one day got 100+ train. Every 20 minute one train depart from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo

RegentCid Do you advice to make a reservation for Juraku or walk in/queue?

managed to make a reservation for a couple of restaurants except Juraku due to language barrier
*
You didn't go Takayama on Japanese holiday season. So just walk in.

between ueno station and tokyo station, which one is easier to make a transfer from Narita Express Train to the shinkansen? i have some luggages to drag.

which route is actually faster?

all i remember about Tokyo Station there are a lot of floors

all i remember about Ueno Station is that the Keisei-Ueno station (where Narita Express stops) is little walking distance from Ueno Station.
*
From Narita Airport, I prefer Keisei Airport Express A.K.A Mini Shinkansen to Keisei Ueno. From Keisei Ueno walk to JR Ueno Station.

Sorry, Kintetsu is the train name?  laugh.gif coz from google all i get was to use Tokaido Shinkansen line (that have 3 train Nozomi, Hikari, Kodama)
still blur with the Shinkansen/train in general.

"Just buy on spot" as in i can go to counter/machine to buy the next incoming Shinkansen ? like our MRT/LRT here?
do you know the price now? for 1 way ticket from Osaka > Tokyo?
Btw can you share hows the weather are like during Early Nov?
Coz forecast is 8c - 20c mainly sunny, is like Genting/Cameron?
sweater jacket will do?
*
Kintetsu are the largest private operator train company in between Osaka - Nagoya.
From Nara to Osaka City, Kintetsu are the fastest because Kintetsu offer "Limited Express" train.

Yes, You can go Counter / Machine buy next train ticket. Every 15 Minute One Shinkansen depart from Shin-Osaka Station towards Tokyo Station.

No matter what Train (Nozomi , Hikari , Kodama) you on.
Green Class - 19,390 Yen (Train Ticket: 8,910 Yen & Green Class Seat: 10,480 Yen)
Reserved Seat (Normal Class) - 14,520 Yen (Train Ticket: 8,910 Yen & Reserved Seat: 5,610 Yen)
Unreserved Seat (Normal Class) - 13,870 Yen (Train Ticket: 8,910 Yen & Unreserved Seat: 4,960 Yen)

Unreserved Seat means you leave your seat for toilet , anyone can take over your seat just like KTM Commuter / MRT / LRT. Reserved Seat means you got seat number

Shinkansen normally layout will be

[Green Class Coach] - [Reserved Seat Coach] - [Reserved Seat Coach] - [Reserved Seat Coach] - [Reserved Seat Coach] - [Unreserved Seat Coach] - [Unreserved Seat Coach] - [Green Class Coach]

ok just to understand better;
Kintetsu own Nozomi , Hikari , Kodama (like our ETS / Intercity own by KTM?)
Tokaido Shinkansen is the line name?
Regarding the seat/ticket
for Green Class/Reserved Seat meaning i need choose a specific time train rite? and can only board that particular train?
for Unreserved Seat, just like normal train i can board which ever that arrived at the platform or if too full i can wait for the next train?
Kintetsu is Kintetsu, JR is JR. Shinkansen belong to JR. Kintetsu is private operator operates in Osaka + Nagoya + Kyoto.
From Nara to Osaka / Kyoto vice versa only 2 Operator, one is JR , one is Kintetsu. JR only offer local train which is similar to our KTM Commuter, it stop every station. Sometimes got Rapid service which skip some station. Kintetsu offer "Limited Express" which is more expensive but more comfortable & more faster. Kintetsu Limited Express is similar to our ETS. From Osaka to Nara by JR need 1 hour, Kintetsu Limited Express only need 35 minute.

If you Google Map Nara, you will see 2 Train Station. One is JR Nara Station, another is Kintetsu Nara Station. biggrin.gif

Green / Reserved / Unreserved also need choose a specific time train. Because 8,910 Yen is Train Ticket. So you got the Train Number & Time. If you buy Unreserved Seat, if the Train comes & Full, you stand all the way to Tokyo but this is very rare, it only happen on Japan Golden Week.

Example you reach Shin-Osaka Station at 16:00

16:06 Nozomi 34

16:15 Nozomi 236

16:21 Nozomi 422

Ticket machine will show 6 train which is depart soon. you just choose which depart time suit you most. If machine too complicated, you just go JR Ticket Office buy Shinkansen Ticket, staff will arrange best depart train for you.

Japan Train are very very accrurate!!! 16:15 train, the train will arrived platfrom at 16:10 and it will depart exactly 16:15. If you arived Shin-Osaka Station at 16:00, I suggest you buy 16:21 or 16:40 or 17:00

i saw it's usually a 20-minute transfer time is given

is 20 minutes enough to walk from Keisei Ueno to Ueno?
*
You already booked the Shinkansen Ticket? I dunno how fast is your walking pace and luggage size. If you count 20 minute from Keisei Train arrived Platfrom to JR Ueno Shinkansen Platfrom, then imposible. because you need go up excalator, passing gate then walk underground passage / road surface. JR Ueno Station is Huge!! Similar to our KL Sentral + Nu Sentral Mall Size

But distant between Keisei Ueno to JR Ueno station just cross one street. My walking pace, 2 minute only.

Based on my vague memory about Japan, their beds are smaller. Even the double beds for two persons are smaller than our regular queen-size beds in Malaysia. If possible, I don’t want two twin beds, but oh well. Do they have at least our queen-size beds there or larger beds? If you know which hotels in Tokyo have these beds, please suggest ya.

Otherwise, please let me know which are the best areas to stay in Tokyo? Affordable for 6 nights. Less than RM 3k if possible. Our main places are the Disneysea, Warner Bros Studio Harry Potter and Kirby Cafe. I don’t know what’s the normal traveling time in Tokyo, is 45 minutes considered far? It sounded far to me. laugh.gif The rest are the normal attractions in Tokyo, areas like Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku etc.
*
I got few list but the price are all over your 3K budget. biggrin.gif

- Asakusa Tobu Hotel
- Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Ikebukuro
- Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu

This 3 confirm real Queen & King size bed. Western size

where to buy suica card?

or can buy in Malaysia and they send here?  laugh.gif
what is IC card?
*
IC card are Suica / Pasmo / ICOCA...etc etc.
Due to Shortage, travelers only can get (Welcome Suica)(Pasmo Passport) from Narita / Haneda Airport JR ticket office only.

Welcome Suica or Pasmo Passport similar to Normal IC Card but it cannot refund. It will self deactivated after 14 days
DO NOT load too much money inside!!

one of the hotel said that the shuttle bus will drop off the passengers at the Fourth Floor of Terminal 1.

so, checking with you, can a bus really drop off passengers at the fourth floor?

from google street view, i saw there is an elevated road at the top floor of terminal 1.
*
Oh...4th floor will be Departure Level. Hotel Shuttle consider as private, similar to Our KLIA / KLIA2, direct drop at upper level ( Departure)
I tot you go Narita by public transport bus, then will be 1st Floor

Correct me if wrong, according to the website, Yamato only have counter at Tokyo station but not in Narita terminal.
I'm hoping either to keep my extra luggage at Narita on arrival except for 1-2 and to have those move to the airport 1 day prior to my departure
