I might go for Funaya...my girlfriend is not very keen on castles or temples hmm.gif

On side note, any recommended places to eat for lunch and dinner in Kyoto for 3 days? I know Nishiki market and Fushimi Inari market only.

For now, only the Tōkaidō, San’yō, and Kyūshū Shinkansen routes are affected. That means you can still take advantage of the luggage rack on the Hokuriku, Jōetsu, Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, and Hokkaido Shinkansen. Local trains and subways also do not need to be reserved.

https://tokyocheapo.com/travel/transport/ne...-luggage-rules/

just to confirm, is the above correct?

the luggage rules for shinkansen is only for the three routes above?

The rest not affected - I can use the shinkansen as usual with my oversized luggage.
*
Nop, JR EAST which Hokuriku, Jōetsu, Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, and Hokkaido (Now Aomori - Hakodate part currently under JR EAST control)
Luggage over 250cm / 30kg will need to pay extra charges.

oh, i just checked my two luggages. I thought it's more than 160cm.

Both each individually are less than 161cm (length + width + height). Also, both each (when filled up) are less than 30kg.

Is it affected by the need to reserve the luggage compartment for JR East, even if it's between 161cm and 250cm?
*
JR East no need reserve the luggage compartment if luggage no more than 2 pieces / 250cm / 30KG

Hi all, want to ask a bit of advice and opinion:

I'll be landing at Narita on 13th Oct 8:10PM and was wondering if I can reach my hotel at Higashi-Koenji station in time before all the train stop operating?

Assuming my flight no delay, I was planning the following route:

Narita T2 (Keisei Skyliner) > Nippori (JR Yamanote) > Shinjuku (Metro Marunoichi) > Higashi-Koenji

Do you think the immigration clearance and luggage claim will take a lot of time and if if the plan above might have very tight schedule?
*
No problem at all. By 11pm can reach Higashi-Koenji.
Tokyo Metro until 12am. 10Pm 100% you already reach Keisei-Nippori Station.

Last Train (Metro Marunoichi) leaving Shinjuku heading Higashi-Koenji direction was 11:52pm

How's the covid situation in Japan now? Mandatory to wear mask? If don't wear mask in Malaysia okay?
*
Mask are no longer mandatory.

QUOTE(Duckies @ Oct 16 2023, 07:29 AM)
Eh? Vending machine got closing time? My arrival time is around 10pm...so after going through kastam and all probably can't make it for any trains..so I've plan to stay nearby hotel until the next morning. Thought will get the Welcome SUICA card at airport....but if close at 8pm then cannot adi sad.gif
*
Vending Machine is 24hrs. But more and more modern type vending machine no longer accept paper bill. It only takes coins / IC Cards ( Suica / Pasmo / ICOCA)

Oh I misread..it's the JR counter that closes at 8pm, not the vending machine sweat.gif

Is the covid case still serious in Japan compared to Malaysia? If I don't wear mask will I get discriminated?
*
Haneda Airport do have 24 hrs convinence store such as 7-11 / Lawson / Family Mart.
70% Japanese already no longer wearing mask. Very few still wearing during peak hour.

Welcome Suica card is better or add IC card into Apple Wallet? Can physical Suica cards reload with credit cards at the machine? I read from a FB group saying sometimes these IC cards on Apple Wallet take a bit time to clear the transaction after pass by JR stations and could be an issue in the next usage. Not sure if it is true or not.

Can anyone share the experience?

What's the pros and cons of using physical card vs IC card Apple Wallet?

QUOTE(tohff7 @ Oct 16 2023, 10:59 AM)
First time i use it was for JR Chuo Line (Shinjuku-Kanda station). No problem with lag or anything

Just that foreign visa card cannot use reload Apple Wallet Suica, so I have to use my Amex
*
If I not mistake, Welcome Suica cannot link with Apple Pay.
Welcome Suica are not normal Suica....Welcome Suica will deactivate after 29 days

Initially booked Toyota Roomy via Toyota Rent a Car, but unable to option 4WD. So I need to make a call directly to their service line to add in this 4WD option. I was surprised there's 4WD option for such a small car as I thought I need to take bigger car like SUV to have the 4WD option. In the end, I just need to top up Y9900 for 6days rental.

Chosen Roomy as these type of car is not available in Msia and I don't want to drive the usual Yaris or Corollas.

BTW, How do toll charges work in Japan? I heard theres unlimited usage card (like Rail Pass) thats only available for tourist
*
Japan Yaris are different model from Malaysia Yaris.Japan Yaris more on WRC version which is similar to Yaris GR. One of my favorite car In Japan. Top up money get unlimited ETC from car rental.

The unlimited ETC can get easily or need to pre-book from the car rental?

Wow, their yaris is similar with GR Yaris. maybe next time choose this for a drive to MtFuji during Fall Season. bruce.gif  bruce.gif
*
Prebooked from car rental. Optional adding money similar to 4WD option. Driving at Hokkaido always add 4wd and unlimited etc. This 2 money cannot skip

QUOTE(Blofeld @ Oct 17 2023, 12:40 PM)
i'm deciding between staying overnight at Yamagata or Zao Onsen

On one hand, there seems to be more things to do at night in Yamagata with shopping malls and more restaurants

Zao Onsen seems a nice play to stay overnight in one of the ryokans but there seems to be limited restaurants and nothing much else to do at night.

Has anyone here stayed overnight at zao onsen? Is it worth it?
*
I perfer Ginzan Onsen. Why stay at Yamagata? Either stay at Onsen village / Sendai (City)

Isolate but very beautiful. Beautiful comes with high price tag too. biggrin.gif
Normally I go Yamagata side, I won't stay at Yamagata city.

Leaving Sendai 5am morning with Senzan Line to Yamadera Station. Hike Yamadera Temple then having lunch at Yamagata city and back to Sendai with Senzan Line.

OR

Leaving Sendai 5am morning with Senzan Line to Yamadera Station. Hike Yamadera Temple then having lunch at Yamagata city and head to Oshida Station. From Ohisda Station take Bus to Ginzan Onsen (overnight) and back to Tokyo from Oshida Station by Shinkansen

Bro... You mean stay at Sendai? I thought usually tourist will stay at Yamagata city as is very near to Ginzan onsen (iinm about 30km). To overnight at Ginzan Onsen, any recommended onsen or hotels because the ones available are crazily expensive. sweat.gif
*
Ginzan Onsen are expensive because it was beautiful. For those go Ginzan Onsen by morning and leaving by evening then can overnight at Yamagata City / Shinjo. Just go for photoshooting and onsen bath. Ginzan Onsen got alot bath house from 500 - 2000 Yen category.

Sorry about the noobish question, i tried searching for electrical point or plug but no one seem to talk about this. the voltage in japan is different to msia right? does it affect the charging time for devices? and need to bring along adapter right?
*
Japan using two associated plug types A. So you need socket converter. Japan used 110V , Malaysia 230V charger adapter are no problem in Japan. But If you buy electronic from Japan and used in Malaysia, make sure you buy step down or can take 230V, if not all your electronic will be burn.

Hi hi,

First time traveler to Japan Osaka/Kyoto in Mid November

Travelling with wife and a child.

Would like to seek for some pro advice here on how to purchase JR pass or JS pass, been googling about the differences but still no clear enough.

I'll reached at kansai airport on the 10th and go to Kyoto for a 4d3n stay, there after going to Osaka on the 13th till 18th.

Planning to visit Osaka aquarium (1day) and USJ (1day)

Any great itinerary and where can I make purchases for the tickets?

Any advices are greatly appreciated.
*
You don't need any JR Pass if plan to visit Osaka & Kyoto.

You can buy 4 Days Kansai Thru Pass at Kansai International Airport Tourist Information Center 1F, Terminal 1 Bldg. [0830 -1730]
Kansai Thru Pass + Icoca will be enough.

Yea. I'm looking at klook for USJ alone. Other than that I'm not too sure if it's legit of a need to purchase.
Really? Kansai thru pass to reach Kyoto from airport during arrival then from kyoto to Osaka ? Is this sufficient?
May I ask if it's train tickets, which train line should I be looking at?

Many thanks for all the great sharing here
*
3 Days Kansai Thru Pass is sufficient. Kansai Thru Pass can used any day you want, It doesn't need to be consecutive days.
If you used Kansai Thru Pass, you can hop into any public transport within Osaka, Kyoto & Kobe except JR Trains & Taxi.
Plus showing Kansai Thru Pass also gives you extra discount on purchase Aquarium entrance ticket.

hi there, can i confirm if i could actually follow the blue line to reach kyoto?

user posted image

Looks like if i were to use Kansai thru pass i would need to have multiple transit/stop

Yes. If you plan to used Kansai Thru Pass to Kyoto. I suggest blue one. Hankyu Railway from Umeda > Kyoto-kawaramachi Station [Heart of Kyoto]
You can take Hankyu "Limited Express" [特急] . 40 minute journey.

Local 普通 - Stop all Station
Rapid 急速 - Skip some station
Limited Express 特急 - Only stop at major big station

Hankyu Railway all this 3 train are same price & covered by Kansai Thru Pass

Day One, no way you can get pass at 10am. Kansai Airport are huge.
Maybe 10:30 - 10:40. You had to buy Icoca from ticket Machine / Travel information Center too. For those day not using Knsai Thru Pass, had to used Icoca.

Japan Hotel check in are 3pm and check out was 10am.

if you buy the shinkansen tickets online, where can you collect the tickets? I don't have a SUICA card. I don't have iPhone also.

do u still have to queue up at the JR office? Or is there a way to collect the tickets from the machine?

I'm trying to avoid queuing up at the JR office due to the expected long queue at either Narita Airport or Tokyo Station

If you buy ticket online. You will received QR code & booking no. from E-mail. Go to Ticket machine and scan thru QR code....done.
