The rpm of the engine dropping to 500 and vibration inside car before the rpm goes back up to 1000+ when the vehicle is idle, this surely sounds serious and I can't imagine something like this to happen to any new cars even Proton or Perodua as in my 30 years of driving experience I haven't encountered anything like this before.

Did you experience this for your Altis? Any owners of the current Corolla care to share if your experienced all these issues which sound shocking to me.

For this, yes, I would think it was the characteristic of the idle tuning, it was the compressor cutting off causing the rpm dropped, but this sudden action will drop the rpm too much, you'll feel the vibration, then the ECU tries to readjust back to 650-700 rpm. Then when compressor run again, it will slowly climb back up to 850 - 900 rpm.

Drove Proton gen2, idle was stable and consistent but high at 900rpm with compressor on and off, no such annoying idle. Drove VW Polo Sedan, idle would dropped when off AC but still around 700 rpm so not vibrate as bad.

You can join their Facebook group, search for Corolla Altis Gen 12 Malaysia, a few groups will appear, join in then you can know the owners discussion.

Thanks. The group is closed, only open to owners. Not interested to join and will just find out here on this forum from existing owners.

It's surprising, to me, if this is the characteristic of tuning in that the rpm will drop to 650-700 with vibration and climb back up. But perhaps it doesn't feel as bad in real life. Reading this feels like it is something that only old cars with worn out engine or clogged pipes which will show this. I don't have experience with this so I am not sure about the severity. If it's bad to the point of affecting the experience of the driver, I suppose the service centre will be able to rectify it to make sure the rpm will be stable and won't drop and cause vibration inside the vehicle when the car is stationary waiting at traffic lights. Or at least tune it to drop just a little if that's the inherent character of Toyota tuning..

650-700 is ok already, the initial drop is brief moment to 500rpm which it vibrates, sometime you'll though the engine might dies in this brief second.

Well, nothingcan be done, some new owner open topic asking this after few weeks getting the car. But then, just matter of time you'll accustomed and accept this is the nature of ECU idle logic.

I knew it happen on gen 11, but thought it'll improve on gen 12, surprise to find out still same, probably same engine so not much changes on the tuning side.

Next time if you test drive, try to off aircond so compressor not running, drive around normally then when you brake to stop, that's the brief moment the "idle struggle". With ac on compressor running time you won't feel this...

Good to know. When I test drove the Corolla GR Sport, I didn't feel any vibration although the car was stationary just for a split second for once when waiting at U-turn, but this was with the air conditioner turned on all the time as usual. Will arrange for test drive another time if serious in considering the car. A bit of put off to hear these issues considering the famous "Toyota reliability" tagine but guess it's not perfect after all. If all these issues are plaguing the Corolla or other Toyota models (a Vios owner reported same rpm drop symptom on the main forum page but a rare occurrence), I am not sure what other hidden issues are prevalent with other car manufacturers. Nevertheless I presume issues can be fixed at service centres but it's just the inconvenience of sending the car to the SC to have problems fixed.

@voscar does your car have noticeable or serious rattling sound inside the cabin? I am particular about rattling sound of poor fittings inside the cabin and have low tolerance to rattling sound, and from what I was made to understand the Corolla and higher Toyota models don't show much rattling sound when compared to other competitors and are fairly quiet when on the road.

There is rattling noise in my gen 11.5, the "massage chair" vibrate sensation on side passenger seat without occupancy when you driving and it'll have minor noise. It's a known issue I didn't realize previously until one fine day when driving alone, I see the seat was like massage chair vibrating on its own, something like resonance effect at certain speed + road undulations.

Then on the dashboard, there's noise when going through imperfect road, somewhere around radio to aircond vent area. I'm ok with that, just play music and you won't hear it.

For gen 12, if you on their Facebook group, yes there are some complaints on those rattling noise here and there. Quality on gen 12 seems getting worse tho.

Thanks for the information. Appreciated. Looks like it's not all roses as what I've imagined.

Been driving close to 6 months and 10k. Complained about rattling at both sides of seat belt slider area for the 1st 1k and 5k service but doesn't seems to be resolved so far. Going to complain again at 10k service but my guess is same outcome.

Thanks for the response. I hope you will get it sorted out during the next service. I have test driven the Corolla GR Sport earlier last month and the overall feel of the car is high quality. The suspension of the car feels more planted and nimble when compared to the Corolla Cross and is tuned toward comfort. I'm not sure how different is the Corolla GR Sport to the regular Corolla but my guess is the difference is minimal judging from my test drive experience of both Corolla Cross regular and GR Sport version. In other words the GR sport badge is a gimmick with minimal difference in the handling and performance of the vehicles as the changes are mainly in the looks.

You may try other service centres if the current one you are visiting fails to resolve the issue of your car. Perhaps some pointers from other Corolla owners here might help but it appears that the owners here are not very active.

Hi Altis lovers,

I just got my Altis the GR version and saw two white drops on the windshield. Initially, I thought it could be paint from my porch wall or ceiling due to heavy rain. So I removed them. After removing them I notice there where two sensor like 3mm diameter hole underneath. Anyone notice the intentional paint or marks to block the sensor which is on the passenger side wiper. You have to lift to see. I didn’t take photo of the paint but after removing I saw the underneath sensor like ciircle. Anyone else noticed it?
