in india, a farmer children will only know how to farm. he does not know anything else. if he came from a certain caste, that caste traditionally only know how to farm. any form of social progression is for that person to become a better farmer.

if he tries to break away from that caste, he will have trouble to acquire any sort of support. lets say he wants to become a trader or a businessman, nobody in his community will want to support him or even if they want to they dont know how.

lack of support system in his community will cause him trouble if anything goes wrong with his business. not only in his business but also in his social acceptance.

this also applies in a way to Malaysia. you cannot expect a felda settler son to suddenly become a businessman because he definitely lacks the knowledge, financial capability and support system within his community. a 3rd generation chinese sensei also cannot suddenly decide to become an open sea fisherman because he definitely do not have the support system.

which come to a conclusion, to breakaway from caste system, a proper education and an effective support system is important. a country like India is high in corruption in all level of society. this aspects are inter related and the reason why its a complicated issue that need many parties to involve. simply implying a liberal laissez faire western concept without real understanding on the ground does not work and will only cause disasterous.
