I belive this idea that all muslims need to have arab names is a Malaysia thing, not a muslim thing. Sure there is a tradition that the first born son is named Muhammed. If you want to memeluk Islam, better try to be a Malay also. Reason being is that as a Muslim, you will be subject to additional Sharia laws on your life. (i.e. cannot drink, cannot eat pork, must fast on Ramadan, no physical contact with opposite sex, etc)

As it is, all I can see is future problems for society in general if the National Registration Department were to follow this instruction.

Yes. Convert to Islam doesn’t equal convert to Malay. But one serious question is, does convert to Islam make you a bumiputera? I have someone I know who has converted but keep his Chinese name. Last month, he got a notice from ASB that instruct him to withdraw all his money and to close his account, just because he is having a Chinese name.
