I belive this idea that all muslims need to have arab names is a Malaysia thing, not a muslim thing. Sure there is a tradition that the first born son is named Muhammed. But it's absolutely not a requirement for conversion. And has not been in Malaysia either for several years. Totally ok to keep old name.

QUOTE(Princess_Alicia @ Jan 14 2020, 10:58 PM) Yes. Convert to Islam doesn’t equal convert to Malay. But one serious question is, does convert to Islam make you a bumiputera? I have someone I know who has converted but keep his Chinese name. Last month, he got a notice from ASB that instruct him to withdraw all his money and to close his account, just because he is having a Chinese name. No. Bumiputra is all about heritage (or in some cases connection) Malays, Orang asli, S&S natives, and some peranakan chinese are bumiputera. The rest of us are not. Also you can become Bumiputera if you marry some person with great connections... http://www.sarawakreport.org/2018/02/outra...-native-status/
