Probably i havent been cycling so much thus not aware of the technologies around me but as im aware off for speed:
1) Magnet sensor which is attached to the rim (if your spokes is weird, then harder to attach, prone to loosing the magnet while cycling). You could detect speed and distance if you are cycling on a trainer unless you are using direct drive
2) GPS speed calculation from the head unit (will consume more battery but more accurate). Wont work with trainer

btw i tot gps calculated speed less accurate coz gps drift, elevation diff etc? cheapo units using magnets better accuracy as it shows the true speed based on wheel rotation.
