Dear Biker Base,

I observed that bikes tend to hold their value better compared against cars.

What is the depreciation (in %) like for bikes of different categories, and which type of bikes hold their value best?

Categories being kapchai, scooters, sports, touring and superbikes, over 1-5 yr range.

Thanks!

i hv been observing certain used bike price.

looks like it is determined by dealers.
they say dealers are king, they determine the life n death of a brand /model.
n dealers all pakat together...

their reasons will be of cos.. buyers demand.. bla bla..

compare used price of z900 vs old mt09.
z650 vs old mt07...

True.. goes to all brands...

If you want to sell to dealers or trade in.. its at their mercy..

best is you sell ur self to direct buyer better...

Quickly comparing them prices

Kawasaki Z900
2019 NEW RM 47K @ https://www.zigwheels.my/new-motorcycles/ka.../z900-abs/price
2018 USED RM 39K @ https://www.mudah.my/2018+Kawasaki+Z+900-79692570.htm
2017 USED RM 39K @ https://www.mudah.my/2017+Kawasaki+Z+900+Z900-79380894.htm

3 yrs depreciation = 39K / 47K = 83% value held ... NOT BAD for the dealers.

Yamaha MT 09
2019 NEW RM 49K @ https://www.zigwheels.my/new-motorcycles/yamaha/mt-09
2017 USD RM 40K @ https://www.mudah.my/YAMAHA+MT+09+TRACER+MT...on-79822306.htm
2015 USED RM 34K @ https://www.mudah.my/2015+Yamaha+MT09+MT+09...on-79863029.htm

4 yrs depreciation = 34K / 49K = 70% value held

Feel free to correct my simple math above if I made a mistake.

Of course this is assuming cash purchases. The lost will be much much higher if purchased under shop loan installments (which can see a 25% interest on the total loan amount spread over 6 yrs).

And then there is the user trade-in values which tend to be lower than displayed by dealers in the link above.

they will c the condition of bike, milage, added part, demand, features to determine the price.

dealers favour yamaha, honda, then kawasaki.

z900 cheapest is ~35-36k
this frm welly, milage jz less than 7k.

i heard ppl say can be adjusted, but how true is tht?

almost every one is hearing someone say tht it can be adjusted.

somebody need to show some proof, instead of listening frm salesman or pomen.

if all buyer dont trust the 'low milage' then dealer how?
adjust but dont make it too low? lol..

search on google also did not turn out any solid results apart frm stopping the meter frm running..

Yes. I can confirm that mileage can be adjusted.

I previously went to view a used 2012 ER6 from a private dealer. After arrived at his place on the agreed time, the bike still haven't arrived yet.
I found out that it's a Terengganu bike, he bought it from a private seller there and tow the bike all the way to KL.

He called the towing-guy. The dude said will arrive in 10 minutes, got some delay because of the jam.

So I just waited there, and I am the first person to view the bike. Checked everything, the mileage of this bike was around 60K km.

The next day, I checked on Mudah. I saw that exact bike.
Same black color, same number plate.

The mileage on the picture was shown at 16km. Jeez.
Then I knew that the mileage is not original.

Never went back to the private dealer anymore.

So generally bikes have good resale value (save for black sheeps like KTM) provided they were originally purchased at RRP (outside of high interest loans like Aeon and Singer).

This one is April 2017 model?
https://www.motomalaysia.com/kawasaki-z900-...specs-malaysia/

RRP OTR RM 49,000
Now RM 35,000

Depreciation = 1.0 - (RM 35,000 / RM 49,000) = 0.2857 = 28.57%

Depreciation over 2 years and 8 months from April 2017 (as at 19.12.2019).

Pretty good!

Estimate current value RM 4000

Depreciated value
= (10800 - 4000) / 10800 * 100
= 6800 / 10800 * 100
= 63% depreciated over 5 years (2015 - 2019)

Bike depreciation depends on a few things.

Sometimes the new model completely obsoletes the old one. Summore got CKD. Then the old one immediately depreciate like hell.

Case in point, the Z800. The second Z900 came out in CKD, second hand z800 prices dropped like a stone. Now it's super cheap.

In the case of Ducati, just before the timing belt change... value drops like hell. LOL. So if you find a cheap-ish Ducati, this is the first thing to ask.

If depreciation bothers you, buy a 3-5 year old big bike from a weekend hero biker who racks up very little mileage. By the time you sell it on years later, you will have lost very little.

Tip: Many guys buy big bikes on impulse, then 2 years later cannot pay hutang and are forced to sell. Nice bargains to be had here. But beware... some of these idiots lari hutang and sell the bike secara haramjadah (JT), some try sell the bike secara 'sambung bayar'. Steer clear, unless you also the haramjadah type willing to gamble.

This bike (and Belang) have a cult of their own, become antiquity.. since Lion Suzuki already stop selling Kapchai and its a rare breed bike... (way ahead of its time)

Similar with RX-Z.. 125Z and Honda CG, C70

Hi All,

I'm planning to get a used 600cc , saw few of these models.
found this is around rm38k with mileage less than 35k.
probably year 2012-2013 model.

any experienced rider can give suggestions on what to look for when checking out the bike.
or anyone that are well experience on bikes like these, don't mind to pm me your contact, and assist me on the examination.

I recently tried to buy a z250 from a private seller. The seller did inform me he got it 2nd hand. Just so happens that the bike he was selling was one i had my eye ons ( Seller bought it 2nd hand from a shop and if i bought it I would be 3rd owner). The shop selling price was RM8500 and he was trying to sell it for RM8700, when i asked him about this he said that it was because he gotten new tires, chain and other maintenance parts for the bike. But as the seller trying to sell it as 3rd hand shouldn't it go for cheaper because of how many people the bike has been through? Can anyone share their thoughts and opinions on this? Is Malaysia's private motorcycle sales market really just " harga ikut hati"?

you missed a steal bro. 2nd hand 3rd hand 4th hand doesn't bring down the price. It is all about market pricing. If 1st owner bought and didn't use (maybe put number plate), does it make the bike less valuable? In the end the bike condition is the main factor, not the number of past owners I guess.

Up to you on what is acceptable coz it's your money.

If someone wants to sell a bike that has had 15 owners at a high price, you might hv your own reasons that justify buying it i.e. it's a rare iconic bike such as the NR750 or the FP1.

In general though, I'd apply some common sense... but that's just me.

Jajan is tricky. Only consider its worth in the price if its useful to u.

The caveat is that some jajan might actually be detrimental to you instead of adding value. For example bullshit loud exhaust - how much bribe do you need to pay when you take it to PUSPAKOM to transfer ownership? How much bribe are u prepared to pay when you get stopped by the cops?

Friend got one 2017 registered 2019 Kawasaki Z650 green color, done only 3,800km want to let go. Super mint condition.

He got it from first owner at 1,800km, he wanted to tour in it but realized seat position is not for touring. His old bones cannot tahan biggrin.gif

Bike shop offered 20k trade in for Modenas Versys 650.

I think it's a little low for the bike in that condition.

oh well, if anyone here think want to take a look and maybe offer him a little more than trade in price, PM me.

Bike in Subang.

damn, I would love to but times are tough at the moment.

From the screenshot seems like it is from Imotorbike, had some bad experience on my previous viewing where everyone jump on me trying to get me to buy the bike on the spot ohmy.gif

I think that their base selling price, not including OTR price yet as well as servicing on the bike (again i doubt that they claim they does oil change and some maintance lol)

Yep is from Imotorbike, salesman haha biasa dah since is always impulse buying.

Those shown on the post is always the body price not include roadtax + insurance, can always nego with them to include everything into the body price.

Nvr trust whenever people said they done oil change haha, do it again urself for peace of mind unless they can show picture/video of proof they did with mileage.

i think of all china bikes as well, zontes provide the most comprehensive in parts no and also manual to service the bike, literally how to disassemble them with images. For example if one wants to remove fairing only, there is section on it. Can literally buy the part from taobao, unlike other china brands. Too bad the depreciation value is very bad for the brand. Their bike are really good quality

Steer clear, unless you also the haramjadah type willing to gamble.

nice, i aiming z800 abs in 2years, hopefully can get below 20k .

Sharing these 2 ads that I found in mudah.
Really cheap for how much power you can get in a bike.
I personally use a speed triple R myself.
125+ whp and 100+ Nm of torque for less than 30k and ohlins suspension for the R model.
The only cost that you need to do is rebuild the front forks and rear shock, and probably VC depending on the mileage.
Even with those costs added, it will still be less than 40k.

Main reason why I'm advocating for getting used bikes. You can find gems like these.

The look is divisive though.

Just barely a year after I bought my 400 and I am already thinking about changing bike tongue.gif

And unlike most of us I am contemplating 'downgrading' to CBR250RR, love the trico color scheme and stock exhaust sound, and it's something I can rev hard for the thrill on road without riding at illegal speed.

Using my bike purely for daily commute, where I am constantly in the range of 40~100, there is really no way to use the excess power. The dreams of doing road trips and Genting rides prior to getting my bike turn into imaginations only, turns out what you think you would do with the bike and what you would really end up doing with it is quite different.

Yeah I agree the look isnt for everyone. But it has about the same look of mt-09 and mt-10 v2.. and even 2025 bmw s1000r laugh.gif

Its not a first look fell in love kind of style.

Trust me, the 400 is a lot better as a daily ride than any 250 can be. sporty 250s are tuned for higher end power, which makes it very weak in the midrange, and mid range is what you need in traffic. In terms of weight, there isn't really that much between them if the 250 and 400 are twins.

Even better in city traffic are the 400 class singles. brap brap.

No such thing as cannot use the excess power. I ride a 800 on the daily.

Trust me, the 400 is a lot better as a daily ride than any 250 can be. sporty 250s are tuned for higher end power, which makes it very weak in the midrange, and mid range is what you need in traffic. In terms of weight, there isn't really that much between them if the 250 and 400 are twins.

I don't disagree. I used to still travel to Melaka once or twice per month last year when I can still utilize the power on the highway, but since January this year 90% of the time my bike is on the federal highway motorcycle lane laugh.gif So yea my speed is anywhere between 40~100 these days.

I am contemplating two setups at the moment:

Option 1 (2 bikes setup):
1 scooter: will do two things that no other bikes can do :-
- Shield my legs from splashes when I ride through puddles
- No gear shifting: I am a sucker for white shoes

1 sportsbike - CBR250RR when I need to get on highway/do long distance, or I keep my Ninja 400.

-----------------

Option 2 (1 bikes setup):
1 sports tourer - maybe a used CBR650R.

I am leaning towards option 1, maybe it's a bit silly to go from a 400 to 250, but I noticed the way I like sportsbike is a lot more emotional (colors, design, cockpit view, exhaust sound) than practical. I just think the CBR250RR has everything I want.
