Dear Biker Base,

I observed that bikes tend to hold their value better compared against cars.

What is the depreciation (in %) like for bikes of different categories, and which type of bikes hold their value best?

Categories being kapchai, scooters, sports, touring and superbikes, over 1-5 yr range.

Thanks!

looks like it is determined by dealers.
...
compare used price of z900 vs old mt09.
z650 vs old mt07...

Quickly comparing them prices

Kawasaki Z900
2019 NEW RM 47K @ https://www.zigwheels.my/new-motorcycles/ka.../z900-abs/price
2018 USED RM 39K @ https://www.mudah.my/2018+Kawasaki+Z+900-79692570.htm
2017 USED RM 39K @ https://www.mudah.my/2017+Kawasaki+Z+900+Z900-79380894.htm

3 yrs depreciation = 39K / 47K = 83% value held ... NOT BAD for the dealers.

Yamaha MT 09
2019 NEW RM 49K @ https://www.zigwheels.my/new-motorcycles/yamaha/mt-09
2017 USD RM 40K @ https://www.mudah.my/YAMAHA+MT+09+TRACER+MT...on-79822306.htm
2015 USED RM 34K @ https://www.mudah.my/2015+Yamaha+MT09+MT+09...on-79863029.htm

4 yrs depreciation = 34K / 49K = 70% value held

Feel free to correct my simple math above if I made a mistake.

Of course this is assuming cash purchases. The lost will be much much higher if purchased under shop loan installments (which can see a 25% interest on the total loan amount spread over 6 yrs).

And then there is the user trade-in values which tend to be lower than displayed by dealers in the link above.

for kapchai... the price for 2nd hand is not bad. but depends also on kapchai or bikes la.

say like fz, belang if tolak got no value already. but for those quite in demand kapchai like ysuku, lc still got value. even old ex5 still got value.

ktm pulak... well 2014 mia ktm now selling rm4-5k jek. truk gila harga jatuh lol...

but sportsbike, superbike.... this one is really crazy lol... ive seen shops selling a 2005 zx6r for like almost rm30k lol

and dont make me start talking about r6, that thing never goes down lol.... takut tgk harga even thou its 2008 -2009 still fetch almost rm40k

So generally bikes have good resale value (save for black sheeps like KTM) provided they were originally purchased at RRP (outside of high interest loans like Aeon and Singer).

This one is April 2017 model?
https://www.motomalaysia.com/kawasaki-z900-...specs-malaysia/

RRP OTR RM 49,000
Now RM 35,000

Depreciation = 1.0 - (RM 35,000 / RM 49,000) = 0.2857 = 28.57%

Depreciation over 2 years and 8 months from April 2017 (as at 19.12.2019).

Pretty good!

Estimate current value RM 4000

Depreciated value
= (10800 - 4000) / 10800 * 100
= 6800 / 10800 * 100
= 63% depreciated over 5 years (2015 - 2019)
