What advantage that you notice after switching to better router compared to TM ones?

What about the modem itself? Also need to change?
*
The modem supplied by unifi don't need a third-party brand as a replacement. The ISP's are the one who is officially authorized to supply and configure the modem for you. Only the router and dect-phone are replaceable.

QUOTE(misspinky @ Feb 14 2020, 04:36 PM)
modem cannot changed but if broken or damage you need to call tm, they will changed it for you, lifetime warranty.

advantage
-got better speed and stable connection
-freely upgrading the firmware without stuck tm router firmware
-no more wifi name @unifi

usually default router they will use for extra ap or backup router. tm firmware can be flashed to original firmware if you followed the right way. But for me better used other router than default one.
*
What misspinky said is true. Allow me to add an information further, if you're looking for a good wireless router, you should probably go for ASUS brands as these are the only consumer-networking gear that receives firmware upgrade even if the launched model is more than 5 years and they're using universal firmware. If budget is your concern, you can opt either TP-LINK or D-Link as they offer a great hardware with low price and will bid you farewell after a year or more in terms of firmware support.

Hi
just to check with you all.
do anyone of you who have modem provided by TM- Unifi; TP-Link C1200 encounter sudden restart by itself?
Cheers.!
*
Hi there my friend. It is a common problem encountered by many C1200 users here. Infact I am an ex-user of C1200v1. Sudden crash, sudden internet freeze, sudden reboot is a common problem. Do you tied up with your budget because you're not opting to buy a better wireless router out there. confused.gif

QUOTE(wanttobuylaptop @ Feb 14 2020, 05:41 PM)
where can i get details walk through for this?
like that my c1200 can use as an AP at office instead of collecting dust

You can refer the tutorial made the company, here.

Ah; that sucks.

Shall I update the firmware ? If to get better wireless router; what will you recommend? wub.gif
*
D-Link & TP-Link if you have a tight budget but they do offer good hardwares tbh. However they suck whenever it comes to long term support in terms of patching up their firmware to overcome the newly identified threats sometime buat don't know. You can spend your valuable weekend here to go through this site to learn why most of network enthusiasts actually invest to a better router such as from Mikrotik, Ubiquiti and ASUS. What I am trying to tell here is, you're investing your hard-earned pennies to buy a router that be a gate in-between your home device and the internet world and it should be patched well right? Similar to how you upgrade your old rusty pad-lock from time to time to ensure it is strong enough.

The two current brands I can suggest is Mikrotik + any AP supported router or ASUS + and add another AiMesh compatible routers together to perform a mesh network. In the end, the ball is in your court and you should pick the right brand that suits your investment, let it be a long term or a short term. biggrin.gif

sweat.gif in what situation we need a fan for router? actually previously my AC68U kinda hot also, hand can touch it but it just feels hot, it wont burn our hand laugh.gif
new router will be better right? shouldnt need to put addtinal fan, usually what causes the router become hot?  hmm.gif wireless transmission? continuosly braodcast signal? or serving more client?
*
Not a big deal for me. Routers were meant to run 24/7. After-all it is a wear and tear process right? But the recent AX routers from ASUS has an efficient cooling system.

Recently Xiaomi had released a new AX3600 router to pair with their new Xiaomi Mi 10.
Using Snapdragon 4 core + 2 dont know what thing core.
user posted image

Price is reasonable -RMB599 ,but i feel like now buying that not a good time..haha.
Maybe few months later xiaomi will release a more stronger like AX5000 something or higher router with similar price or a bit higher price.

The router seems nice and the specs quite decent, CPU clocked @ 1.0GHz & NPU clocked @ 1.7GHz. Do wait for the router to be in the market for sometime to see how the intervals needed to patch a newer firmware as this is one of the important thing to be considered before buying a router.

Xiaomi router firmware update very slow one,but the spec to selling price is quite cheap.
But quality is not bad (range big big),but not very good la, for my redmi router ac2100 2.4ghz got a bit problem(like 2/100% packet loss or something, and also 2 stick of 2.4ghz antenna only support 300mbps only),
but 5ghz is quite good.(my mi9 can run up to max max max almost 600mbps)
(Range better then my old RT-AC66U)
But RMB169 cant say anything la...
So i quite interested for that new AX3600 one RMB599,at least that one should be not cheap cheap price got more budget can use better hardware to prevent those little bugs or issues.
But of course,i know if next new one from xiaomi should good enough for me to use as AP without issue...haha

And Last Xiaomi router is not router-usable for unifi or maxis without firmware changed.(Only use for AP usage if original Firmware from xiaomi)
*
If I were you, I don't mind investing more $$ for a better hardware and long term support, well expecting 7-8 years support. Once I find an AX router that suits my needs, I will take it. Since we are moving towards Wi-Fi 7 (2024) era.

I have the orange coloured router which provided by TM. If I upgrade to Asus RT-AC86U, will I able to get stable internet connection? Btw, mine is 100mbps package.
*
Are you referring your router looked like this?

user posted image

If you are referring other than the above router, the only router supplied by tm orange in color is the old D-Link DIR 615. If by any means you are using any of these routers, I would suggest you go for AC86U instead. AC routers are quite cheap these days due to the entry of AX routers in the Malaysian market.

Answering to your questions above, yes you can get a stable internet due to a powerful processor, better wireless coverage and long-term security support from ASUS or Asus-Merlin if you want more turbo power..

Yes I meant that router. Is the 88U newer model?
If I change to Asus router, do I need to change the huawei white modem as well?
*
The 88U has two different variants, AC88U and AX88U. So which variant you mean? If you pick the AX88U, yes, the router is a newer AX model from ASUS.

Answering to your queries above, the huawei modem is only configurable by the technician from your ISP side. You don't really have to bother to change it. You only need to keep your PPPoE username and password, then you're good to go.

I wanted to buy AC2300, suddenly decided to cancel. Then which router is best for now and future?
*
Buying a networking gear is like an investment. You invest to get more out from it. In other word, you invest your money to buy a gear in order to be free from headache, lets say for the next 6 to 7 years? No need to worry about security patches if there is any new threat identified by the cybersecurity team unlike the other two common brands here. As mentioned by bro SilentVampire, ASUS is the best choice. You won't go wrong with them. The only recommended consumer-level networking gear brand is only from ASUS. Other than that, its consider a big NO.. Mikrotik is a step ahead of ASUS, the only thing is, its setting up process slightly different compared to the standard method of setting up for first use for consumer grade router.

Just buy RT-AX56U @ RM439.00 only. Asus AC68U is not worthy as per current date as we are moving towards WiFi 7 (802.11be) era

if you are going to be recommending this router, please be aware this model has a heating issue. if you use it long enough and under load, it will overheat then the speed will slow down a lot, also to the point you may have internet dropping.

solution is to use a fan on it, which will reduce temps to working temp conditions. but this requires using a separate fan......

Yes asus router is ok, especially once you install rt merlin firmware on it

I have to partially disagree with you. Yes, the AC68U has heating issue, but it don't really slows down my network. I am a heavy internet user. I used USB fans before, but I ditch them out since it is a wear and tear process. The current best entry-level router solution is non-other than the AX56U.

Text marked bolded:

Thank you brother for pointing out the advantages of using asus-merlin over asuswrt. Well, I prefer ASUS router not only for their longitivity, but for their firmware flexibility as well. Below are the screenshots of the scripts I am currently running in my AC68U (flashed with Asus-Merlin fw):

If I have more budget, I may opt for a pfsense router or Ubiquiti instead.

I only just realized I can only get a maximum of 90+Mbps or my Turbo'd Unifi 800Mbps. Tried searching here, reading the green text at front page and googling but the problem persists. I've checked to make sure things QoS on my router have been turned off too.

My router is downstairs with PC upstairs and figuring out a wiring solution isn't an option for me. Still, I think I should be getting higher speeds than I am even through wireless, right?

Router: Asus RT-AC68u

PC using the motherboard WiFi (Crosshair Hero VII WiFi) but I also have TP-Link T9UH USB Adapter that gets around the same speeds.
*
Buy a new AX56U router since it is retailed below than RM450, it will be a good addition to make your AC68U as a mesh node via AiMesh feature. From there you can plug in LAN cable to the node to your pc/laptop. biggrin.gif

You're right mate. But there are a few ways to overcome such way. If not willing to pull a cable, either invest in an slightly expensive ac86u and link via AiMesh system or buy an ax certified pce adapter to cope up with the speed.

Same thing. Sometimes goes up to 150-200 at most.
I don't mind investing into something like AC88u or better if it means I get something closer to what I'm actually paying for. Getting 12% of the speed I'm paying for is a bit sad.
*
If I were you, I will invest on ac86u. Or you can buy a pure mesh system instead.

Im using 800Mbps. This Deco M only act as an AP. The max speed I get through Deco M4 is 479.70 through my laptop.

Free vpn's aren't recommended if you care much about your privacy. Your data = their source of income. Better off with paid vpn subscription.
